    New Insights into Uniformly Accelerated Detector in a Quantum Field

    We obtained an exact solution for a uniformly accelerated Unruh-DeWitt detector interacting with a massless scalar field in (3+1) dimensions which enables us to study the entire evolution of the total system, from the initial transient to late-time steady state. We find that the Unruh effect as derived from time-dependent perturbation theory is valid only in the transient stage and is totally invalid for cases with proper acceleration smaller than the damping constant. We also found that, unlike in (1+1)D results, the (3+1)D uniformly accelerated Unruh-DeWitt detector in a steady state does emit a positive radiated power of quantum nature at late-times, but it is not connected to the thermal radiance experienced by the detector in the Unruh effect proper.Comment: 6 pages, invited talk given by SYL at the conference of International Association for Relativistic Dynamics (IARD), June 2006, Storrs, Connecticut, US

    The Lieb-Liniger Model as a Limit of Dilute Bosons in Three Dimensions

    We show that the Lieb-Liniger model for one-dimensional bosons with repulsive δ\delta-function interaction can be rigorously derived via a scaling limit from a dilute three-dimensional Bose gas with arbitrary repulsive interaction potential of finite scattering length. For this purpose, we prove bounds on both the eigenvalues and corresponding eigenfunctions of three-dimensional bosons in strongly elongated traps and relate them to the corresponding quantities in the Lieb-Liniger model. In particular, if both the scattering length aa and the radius rr of the cylindrical trap go to zero, the Lieb-Liniger model with coupling constant g∼a/r2g \sim a/r^2 is derived. Our bounds are uniform in gg in the whole parameter range 0≤g≤∞0\leq g\leq \infty, and apply to the Hamiltonian for three-dimensional bosons in a spectral window of size ∼r−2\sim r^{-2} above the ground state energy.Comment: LaTeX2e, 19 page

    Five-year results of a randomised controlled trial comparing cemented and cementless Oxford unicompartmental knee replacement using radiostereometric analysis

    Background: Cementless fixation is an alternative to cemented unicompartmental knee replacement (UKR). The aim of this study was to determine if cementless UKR fixation is as good as cemented by comparing the five-year migration measured radiostereometric analysis (RSA) in a randomised controlled trial.Methods: Thirty-nine patients were randomised to receive either a cemented or a cementless Oxford UKR and were studied at intervals up to five years to assess migration with RSA and radiolucencies with radiographs.Results: During the first year there was a small and significant amount of migration, predominantly in an anterior direction, of both the cemented (0.24 mm, SD 0.32, p = 0.01) and cementless (0.26 mm, SD 0.31, p = 0.00) femoral components. Thereafter there was no significant migration in any direction. At no stage was there any significant difference between the migrations of the cemented or cementless femoral components. During the first year, particularly the first three months, the cementless tibial components subsided 0.28 mm (SD 0.19, p = 0.00). This was significantly (p = 0.00) greater than the subsidence of the cemented tibial component (0.09, SD 0.19, p = 0.28). Between the second and fifth years there was no significant migration of either cemented or cementless tibial components.At five years radiolucent lines occurred significantly less with cementless (one partial) compared to cemented (six partial and one complete) tibial components.Conclusions: As, between two and five years, there was no significant migration of cemented or cementless components, and no significant difference between them, we conclude that cementless fixation is as reliable as cemented.     Coronal Temperature Diagnostic Capability of the Hinode/X-Ray Telescope Based on Self-Consistent Calibration

    The X-Ray Telescope (XRT) onboard the Hinode satellite is an X-ray imager that observes the solar corona with unprecedentedly high angular resolution (consistent with its 1" pixel size). XRT has nine X-ray analysis filters with different temperature responses. One of the most significant scientific features of this telescope is its capability of diagnosing coronal temperatures from less than 1 MK to more than 10 MK, which has never been accomplished before. To make full use of this capability, accurate calibration of the coronal temperature response of XRT is indispensable and is presented in this article. The effect of on-orbit contamination is also taken into account in the calibration. On the basis of our calibration results, we review the coronal-temperature-diagnostic capability of XRT

    Brownian motion of a charged particle in electromagnetic fluctuations at finite temperature

    The fluctuation-dissipation theorem is a central theorem in nonequilibrium statistical mechanics by which the evolution of velocity fluctuations of the Brownian particle under a fluctuating environment is intimately related to its dissipative behavior. This can be illuminated in particular by an example of Brownian motion in an ohmic environment where the dissipative effect can be accounted for by the first-order time derivative of the position. Here we explore the dynamics of the Brownian particle coupled to a supraohmic environment by considering the motion of a charged particle interacting with the electromagnetic fluctuations at finite temperature. We also derive particle's equation of motion, the Langevin equation, by minimizing the corresponding stochastic effective action, which is obtained with the method of Feynman-Vernon influence functional. The fluctuation-dissipation theorem is established from first principles. The backreaction on the charge is known in terms of electromagnetic self-force given by a third-order time derivative of the position, leading to the supraohmic dynamics. This self-force can be argued to be insignificant throughout the evolution when the charge barely moves. The stochastic force arising from the supraohmic environment is found to have both positive and negative correlations, and it drives the charge into a fluctuating motion. Although positive force correlations give rise to the growth of the velocity dispersion initially, its growth slows down when correlation turns negative, and finally halts, thus leading to the saturation of the velocity dispersion. The saturation mechanism in a suparohmic environment is found to be distinctly different from that in an ohmic environment.     Study of CP violation in Dalitz-plot analyses of B0 --> K+K-KS, B+ --> K+K-K+, and B+ --> KSKSK+

    We perform amplitude analyses of the decays B0→K+K−KS0B^0 \to K^+K^-K^0_S, B+→K+K−K+B^+ \rightarrow K^+K^-K^+, and B+→KS0KS0K+B^+ \to K^0_S K^0_S K^+, and measure CP-violating parameters and partial branching fractions. The results are based on a data sample of approximately 470×106470\times 10^6 BBˉB\bar{B} decays, collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy BB factory at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory. For B+→K+K−K+B^+ \to K^+K^-K^+, we find a direct CP asymmetry in B+→ϕ(1020)K+B^+ \to \phi(1020)K^+ of ACP=(12.8±4.4±1.3)A_{CP}= (12.8\pm 4.4 \pm 1.3)%, which differs from zero by 2.8σ2.8 \sigma. For B0→K+K−KS0B^0 \to K^+K^-K^0_S, we measure the CP-violating phase βeff(ϕ(1020)KS0)=(21±6±2)∘\beta_{\rm eff} (\phi(1020)K^0_S) = (21\pm 6 \pm 2)^\circ. For B+→KS0KS0K+B^+ \to K^0_S K^0_S K^+, we measure an overall direct CP asymmetry of ACP=(4−5+4±2)A_{CP} = (4 ^{+4}_{-5} \pm 2)%. We also perform an angular-moment analysis of the three channels, and determine that the fX(1500)f_X(1500) state can be described well by the sum of the resonances f0(1500)f_0(1500), f2′(1525)f_2^{\prime}(1525), and f0(1710)f_0(1710).Comment: 35 pages, 68 postscript figures. v3 - minor modifications to agree with published versio

    Search for a W' boson decaying to a bottom quark and a top quark in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV

    Results are presented from a search for a W' boson using a dataset corresponding to 5.0 inverse femtobarns of integrated luminosity collected during 2011 by the CMS experiment at the LHC in pp collisions at sqrt(s)=7 TeV. The W' boson is modeled as a heavy W boson, but different scenarios for the couplings to fermions are considered, involving both left-handed and right-handed chiral projections of the fermions, as well as an arbitrary mixture of the two. The search is performed in the decay channel W' to t b, leading to a final state signature with a single lepton (e, mu), missing transverse energy, and jets, at least one of which is tagged as a b-jet. A W' boson that couples to fermions with the same coupling constant as the W, but to the right-handed rather than left-handed chiral projections, is excluded for masses below 1.85 TeV at the 95% confidence level. For the first time using LHC data, constraints on the W' gauge coupling for a set of left- and right-handed coupling combinations have been placed.
