Visualizing elements of Sha[3] in genus 2 jacobians
Mazur proved that any element xi of order three in the Shafarevich-Tate group
of an elliptic curve E over a number field k can be made visible in an abelian
surface A in the sense that xi lies in the kernel of the natural homomorphism
between the cohomology groups H^1(k,E) -> H^1(k,A). However, the abelian
surface in Mazur's construction is almost never a jacobian of a genus 2 curve.
In this paper we show that any element of order three in the Shafarevich-Tate
group of an elliptic curve over a number field can be visualized in the
jacobians of a genus 2 curve. Moreover, we describe how to get explicit models
of the genus 2 curves involved.Comment: 12 page
Scalar hairy black holes and solitons in asymptotically flat spacetimes
A numerical analysis shows that a class of scalar-tensor theories of gravity
with a scalar field minimally and nonminimally coupled to the curvature allows
static and spherically symmetric black hole solutions with scalar-field hair in
asymptotically flat spacetimes. In the limit when the horizon radius of the
black hole tends to zero, regular scalar solitons are found. The asymptotically
flat solutions are obtained provided that the scalar potential of the
theory is not positive semidefinite and such that its local minimum is also a
zero of the potential, the scalar field settling asymptotically at that
minimum. The configurations for the minimal coupling case, although unstable
under spherically symmetric linear perturbations, are regular and thus can
serve as counterexamples to the no-scalar-hair conjecture. For the nonminimal

We analyze the diffusion of a Brownian particle in a fluid under stationary
flow. By using the scheme of non-equilibrium thermodynamics in phase space, we
obtain the Fokker-Planck equation which is compared with others derived from
kinetic theory and projector operator techniques. That equation exhibits
violation of the fluctuation dissipation-theorem. By implementing the
hydrodynamic regime described by the first moments of the non-equilibrium
distribution, we find relaxation equations for the diffusion current and
pressure tensor, allowing us to arrive at a complete description of the system
in the inertial and diffusion regimes. The simplicity and generality of the
method we propose, makes it applicable to more complex situations, often
encountered in problems of soft condensed matter, in which not only one but
more degrees of freedom are coupled to a non-equilibrium bath.Comment: 10 pages, accepted in Phys. Rev.

Screening of Hydrodynamic Interactions in Semidilute Polymer Solutions: A Computer Simulation Study
We study single-chain motion in semidilute solutions of polymers of length N
= 1000 with excluded-volume and hydrodynamic interactions by a novel algorithm.
The crossover length of the transition from Zimm (short lengths and times) to
Rouse dynamics (larger scales) is proportional to the static screening length.
The crossover time is the corresponding Zimm time. Our data indicate Zimm
behavior at large lengths but short times. There is no hydrodynamic screening
until the chains feel constraints, after which they resist the flow:
"Incomplete screening" occurs in the time domain.Comment: 3 figure
The large longitudinal spread of solar energetic particles during the January 17, 2010 solar event
We investigate multi-spacecraft observations of the January 17, 2010 solar
energetic particle event. Energetic electrons and protons have been observed
over a remarkable large longitudinal range at the two STEREO spacecraft and
SOHO suggesting a longitudinal spread of nearly 360 degrees at 1AU. The flaring
active region, which was on the backside of the Sun as seen from Earth, was
separated by more than 100 degrees in longitude from the magnetic footpoints of
each of the three spacecraft. The event is characterized by strongly delayed
energetic particle onsets with respect to the flare and only small or no
anisotropies in the intensity measurements at all three locations. The presence
of a coronal shock is evidenced by the observation of a type II radio burst
from the Earth and STEREO B. In order to describe the observations in terms of
particle transport in the interplanetary medium, including perpendicular
diffusion, a 1D model describing the propagation along a magnetic field line
(model 1) (Dr\"oge, 2003) and the 3D propagation model (model 2) by (Dr\"oge et
al., 2010) including perpendicular diffusion in the interplanetary medium have
been applied, respectively. While both models are capable of reproducing the
observations, model 1 requires injection functions at the Sun of several hours.
Model 2, which includes lateral transport in the solar wind, reveals high
values for the ratio of perpendicular to parallel diffusion. Because we do not
find evidence for unusual long injection functions at the Sun we favor a
scenario with strong perpendicular transport in the interplanetary medium as

Metal enrichment processes
There are many processes that can transport gas from the galaxies to their
environment and enrich the environment in this way with metals. These metal
enrichment processes have a large influence on the evolution of both the
galaxies and their environment. Various processes can contribute to the gas
transfer: ram-pressure stripping, galactic winds, AGN outflows, galaxy-galaxy
interactions and others. We review their observational evidence, corresponding
simulations, their efficiencies, and their time scales as far as they are known
to date. It seems that all processes can contribute to the enrichment. There is
not a single process that always dominates the enrichment, because the
efficiencies of the processes vary strongly with galaxy and environmental

Categorizing Different Approaches to the Cosmological Constant Problem
We have found that proposals addressing the old cosmological constant problem
come in various categories. The aim of this paper is to identify as many
different, credible mechanisms as possible and to provide them with a code for
future reference. We find that they all can be classified into five different
schemes of which we indicate the advantages and drawbacks.

Search for direct production of charginos and neutralinos in events with three leptons and missing transverse momentum in √s = 7 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector
A search for the direct production of charginos and neutralinos in final states with three electrons or muons and missing transverse momentum is presented. The analysis is based on 4.7 fb−1 of proton–proton collision data delivered by the Large Hadron Collider and recorded with the ATLAS detector. Observations are consistent with Standard Model expectations in three signal regions that are either depleted or enriched in Z-boson decays. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are set in R-parity conserving phenomenological minimal supersymmetric models and in simplified models, significantly extending previous results
Jet size dependence of single jet suppression in lead-lead collisions at sqrt(s(NN)) = 2.76 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the LHC
Measurements of inclusive jet suppression in heavy ion collisions at the LHC
provide direct sensitivity to the physics of jet quenching. In a sample of
lead-lead collisions at sqrt(s) = 2.76 TeV corresponding to an integrated
luminosity of approximately 7 inverse microbarns, ATLAS has measured jets with
a calorimeter over the pseudorapidity interval |eta| < 2.1 and over the
transverse momentum range 38 < pT < 210 GeV. Jets were reconstructed using the
anti-kt algorithm with values for the distance parameter that determines the
nominal jet radius of R = 0.2, 0.3, 0.4 and 0.5. The centrality dependence of
the jet yield is characterized by the jet "central-to-peripheral ratio," Rcp.
Jet production is found to be suppressed by approximately a factor of two in
the 10% most central collisions relative to peripheral collisions. Rcp varies
smoothly with centrality as characterized by the number of participating
nucleons. The observed suppression is only weakly dependent on jet radius and
transverse momentum. These results provide the first direct measurement of
inclusive jet suppression in heavy ion collisions and complement previous
measurements of dijet transverse energy imbalance at the LHC.Comment: 15 pages plus author list (30 pages total), 8 figures, 2 tables,
