    Prevalence of developmental dental anomalies among adult population of Jazan, Saudi Arabia

    AbstractObjectiveThis study was intended to determine the prevalence of developmental dental anomalies (DDA) among adults attending the outpatient dental clinics of college of dentistry, Jazan University, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The data obtained are expected to increase the understanding of their etiology and also aid for better management and prevention.Materials and methodsThe materials were retrieved from the files of patients reporting to the dental clinics of college of dentistry, Jazan University over a period of four months from December 2013 to March 2014. Panoramic radiographs of 1000 patients (500 males and 500 females) with an age range of 18–40years were examined for anomalies in teeth number, shape, size and position. Descriptive statistics was performed using SPSS 20 and the value of significance obtained using Chi square and Fisher exact test. The level of significance was set at 95% confidence level.ResultsThe prevalence of DDA was 37.8% and distributed equally in both the sexes. The most common anomaly was rotation (20.2%) followed by ectopic eruption (7.6%). Microdontia (0.9%), supernumerary roots (0.7%), macrodontia (0.6%) and transposition (0.3%) were less common. The prevalence of rotation is statistically significant (p<0.05).Discussion and conclusionA significant number of patients had DDA. The prevalence of rotation was high and associated with other common dental diseases. Comparison of our data with other studies showed variation in their prevalence suggesting the influence of genetic and environmental factors. The high prevalence of DDA suggests the need for proper diagnosis, intervention and treatment. Further research into etiological factors for dental anomaly presentation in adults in Saudi Arabia could create awareness and guide preventive strategies to assist in minimizing the associated dental problems

    Stability of nano-oil by pH control in stationary conditions

    The purpose of this study is to investigate the stability of nano-oil by pH control in stationary conditions. The nano-oil was prepared by dispersing an optimal composition of 0.5 vol.% 70 nm hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) nanoparticles in SAE 15W-40 diesel engine oil by sonication technique. Hydrochloric (HCl) acid and Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH) were used as a dispersing agent to determine the stability of the dispersion. The dispersion stability was evaluated by using the sedimentation method with the help of Ultra Violet-Visible (UV-Vis) spectrophotometer. It was demonstrated that the suspension in the alkaline region with a pH value of 11 to 13 was stable over the period of 60 days

    Transient Semi-Circular Lid-Driven Cavity Flow using Non- Uniform Structured Grid Method with Upwind Scheme

    In this article, two-dimensional lid-driven cavity flow in a semi-circular cavity is simulated using a non-uniform finite different method with structured grid. NavierStokes and continuity equations are simplified using a non-dimensional streamfunction– vorticity approach. A Reynolds number of 1000 is used and the vorticity and streamfunction contour plot is monitored with convergence criteria of 1x10-7 set to both the vorticity and the streamfunction value. The result shows that the primary vortex moves from the upper left cavity corner to the upper right corner, while the magnitude of the streamfunction grows at the primary vortex center. The primary vortex size decreases steadily as the time increases. This phenomenon is greatly affected by the increasing size of the secondary vortex at the lower left. Slight changes of vortex size are observed as the flow achieves a steady state condition. Validation of the simulation results shows the current value deviation from the established result is less than 5%. In future, it is recommended to use a better numerical method so that the simulation is more stable and so that the calculation time can be reduced

    Background: Mondia whitei L. (Hook. F.) Skeels (Periplocaceae) is a medicinal plant used locally in managing pain, fever, loss of appetite and as aphrodiasc in the South-Western states of Nigeria. However, the fruit is consumed habitually in the South-Eastern states of Nigeria, leading to speculation that it may possess some central nervous system effect but which has not been scientifically investigated, hence this study.Methodology: Fresh fruits of Mondia whitei were collected and identified by a taxonomist. They were chopped into small pieces and extracted with absolute ethanol. The crude extract was subjected to various chromatographic techniques to isolate a novel compound whose structure was elucidated from the analysis of the crystal data and by extensive use of spectroscopy. The structure was confirmed by synthesis. The compound was subjected to anxiolytic and sedative activity assay. Computational analysis of the receptor binding event of isolated compound at the gamma amino butyric acid A receptor was also evaluated.Results: The structure of the compound was elucidated as para pentyl phenyl benzoate. The neuropharmacological evaluation of the compound indicated significant (p&lt;0.05) depression of the central nervous system. The binding characteristics of the compound to gamma amino butyric acid A receptors appears to be more favorable than those obtained for gamma amino butyric acid, chlorpromazine, benzamidine, and is comparable with the affinity obtained for pentobarbitone and diazepam.Conclusion: These present data provide evidence for the role of para pentyl phenyl benzoate in the habitual consumption of the fruit as well as its central nervous system activities.Keywords: Mondia whitei, Periplocaceae, isolation and synthesis, sedative and anxiolytic effect and Para pentylphenyl benzoat

    The treatment landscape of resectable early-stage non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is transforming due to the approval of novel adjuvant and neoadjuvant systemic treatments. The European Medicines Agency (EMA) recently approved adjuvant osimertinib, adjuvant atezolizumab, adjuvant pembrolizumab, and neoadjuvant nivolumab combined with chemotherapy, and the approval of other agents or new indications may follow soon. Despite encouraging results, many unaddressed questions remain. Moreover, the transformed treatment paradigm in resectable NSCLC can pose major challenges to healthcare systems and magnify existing disparities in care as differences in reimbursement may vary across different European countries. This Viewpoint discusses the challenges and controversies in resectable early-stage NSCLC and how existing inequalities in access to these treatments could be addressed.</p

    Measurement of dijet photoproduction for events with a leading neutron at HERA

    Differential cross sections for dijet photoproduction and this process in association with a leading neutron, e+ + p -> e+ + jet + jet + X (+ n), have been measured with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 40 pb-1. The fraction of dijet events with a leading neutron was studied as a function of different jet and event variables. Single- and double-differential cross sections are presented as a function of the longitudinal fraction of the proton momentum carried by the leading neutron, xL, and of its transverse momentum squared, pT^2. The dijet data are compared to inclusive DIS and photoproduction results; they are all consistent with a simple pion-exchange model. The neutron yield as a function of xL was found to depend only on the fraction of the proton beam energy going into the forward region, independent of the hard process. No firm conclusion can be drawn on the presence of rescattering effects.Comment: 40 pages, 18 figure
