Forecasting of poor visibility episodes in the vicinity of Tenerife Norte Airport
Aviation safety is a priority that may be compromised by adverse weather conditions. This is the case for poor visibility in the vicinity of airports, which can pose a risk during takeoff and landing. For airports that are prone to fog because of their location, an accurate forecast of poor-visibility episodes is vital. However, the forecasting of low clouds is still a challenge in numerical weather prediction, especially when an airport is near complex terrain for which the use of non-hydrostatic mesoscale models is mandatory. All these factors are present at Tenerife Norte Airport, which is commonly affected by poor visibility from low clouds related to persistent trade winds and moist flows from the Atlantic Ocean. In this paper, several methods for estimating visibility based on mesoscale model outputs are tested. Use of the HARMONIE-AROME model is encouraged because of its excellent performance in the detection of poor-visibility episodes (False Alarm Ratio = 0.34–0.38; Frequency Of Misses = 0.22–0.38, depending on the model version and method used). In addition, the use of satellite application facilities is proposed for the nowcasting of low clouds affecting the airport area. Specifically, we used products that estimate cloud type, cloud top altitude, and integrated water vapor content in the boundary layer. Finally, an application is presented for the monitoring of weather conditions in real time to estimate poor-visibility risk.This work was supported by the Aeronautics Annual Plan 2018 of AEMET

Sociodemographic and clinical predictors of adherence to antidepressants in depressive disorders: a systematic review with a meta-analysis
Introduction: Current evidence reveals concerning rates of non-adherence to antidepressant treatment, possibly influenced by various relevant determinants such as sociodemographic factors or those related to the health system and their professionals. The aim of this paper is to review the scientific evidence on sociodemographic and clinical predictors of adherence to pharmacological treatment in patients diagnosed with a depressive disorder.Methods: a systematic review (SR) was conducted. The search for a previous SR was updated and de novo searches were performed in Medline, EMBASE, Web of Science (WoS) and PsycInfo (last 10 years). The risk of bias was assessed using the Cochrane tool for non-randomized studies—of Exposure (ROBINS-E). Meta-analyses were conducted.Results: Thirty-nine studies (n = 2,778,313) were included, 24 of them in the meta-analyses. In the initiation phase, no association of adherence was found with any of the predictors studied. In the implementation and discontinuation phases, middle-aged and older patients had better adherence rates and lower discontinuation rates than younger ones. White patients adhered to treatment better than African-American patients.Discussion: Age and ethnicity are presented as the predictive factors of pharmacological adherence. Lluvias y vientos intensos en Canarias (Feb-Mar 2017)
En este capítulo analizamos el comportamiento del Sistema de Predicción por Conjuntos (SPC) del European Centre for Medium-range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), el ECENS, en las islas Canarias en dos situaciones: lluvias intensas los días 18 y 19 de marzo de 2017 y una situación de viento intenso los días 11 y 12 de febrero de 2017. La predicción probabilista no ha llegado a ser explotada del todo en Canarias, ello se debe probablemente a la baja resolución horizontal que el ECENS tiene frente a modelos como el determinista del Centro Europeo (ECHRES) o el HARMONIE-AROME
(HARM). En Canarias la resolución es un factor crítico, ya que muchos de los fenómenos, sobre todo de precipitación, tienen lugar en una escala muy local, por efectos de importantes convergencias, y suponen un reto incluso para los modelos que hoy por hoy tienen más resolución. Por supuesto, la idea es introducir cada vez más las herramientas probabilistas, ya que complementan a las deterministas
Análisis de los rayos registrados en Canarias en el periodo 2006-2015
En zonas dominadas por centros de altas presiones semipermanentes, como
Canarias, el aire descendente, los bajos niveles de humedad por encima de la inversión
térmica y la estratificación estable, inhiben las tormentas, pero no completamente.
A partir de los rayos registrados en una amplia zona geográfica que engloba las islas
Canarias y Madeira y el área oceánica circundante, se analiza la distribución espacial
y temporal de los mismos, estimando su densidad y el número de días de tormenta en
rejillas de resolución 0,1°, y comparando sus características con las de otras zonas
geográficas similares. Seguidamente, se evalúa el comportamiento de algunos parámetros
eléctricos de los rayos, como la intensidad, la polaridad y la multiplicidad. A continuación,
se trazan algunos rasgos que, con una serie más dilatada, pueden llegar a
adquirir rango climatológico. Finalmente, se conjeturan algunas de las claves del
peculiar episodio de agosto de 2015
SEGUNDA CAMPAÑA DE EXCAVACIONES (1983) EN EL POBLADO DE LA EDAD DEL COBRE DE "EL MALAGÓN" (CÚLLAR-BAZA, GRANADA)
La segunda campaña de excavación en el poblado de la Edad del Cobre de "El Malagón" (Cúllar-Baza, Granada) se ha realizado del 13 de junio al 15 de agosto de 1983, en cuanto a trabajos de excavación propiamente dichos, prolongándose con diversos trabajos de documentación hasta el 3 de septiembre, bajo la dirección de los profesores del Departamentode Prehistoria de Granada, Dres. D. Fernando Molina González y D. Francisco de la Torre Peña, siendo los responsables en las distintas áreas de excavación: D. Francisco Carrión Méndez y D. Francisco Contreras Cortés (profesores del mismo Departamento), D. Inocente Blanco de la Rubia, Da. Mª. Auxiliadora Moreno Onorato, D. Antonio Ramos Millán y Da. María del Pino de la Torre Santana (todos ellos Licenciados en Filosofía y Letras Opción Antigüedad, por la Universidad de Granada); D: José A. González Alcantud colaboró en los trabajos durante la primera semana de la campaña, trasladándose posteriormente a la excavación de urgencia que otro equipo realizaba simultáneamente en el cercano yacimiento argárico de "Castellón Alto", en Galera. Al margen de los citados, hay que reseñarla intervención en la campaña de Da. Inmaculada Rus (Universidad Complutense) y D. Roberto Santamaría (Universidad Autónoma de Madrid)
Arqueología al oeste de Homs: sondeos en los yacimientos de Jeftelik (Natufiense), Tell Marj (Neolítico cerámico) y prospecciones de monumentos megalíticos: campaña 2009
RESUMEN: En el artículo se presentan los resultados de los trabajos de campo desarrollados en el marco del proyecto "Arqueología al oeste de Homs" en 2009. Se han excavado los yacimientos de Jeftelik y Tell Marj y se ha continuado la prospección de las necrópolis megalíticas en la región. Jeftelik es un yacimiento natufiense antiguo en el que se ha localizado una probable estructura de habitación a la que está asociado una gran cantidad de material lítico tallado. Sus características y cronología ponen en cuestión los modelos convencionales sobre el origen y expansión del natufiense. Tell Marj es un poblado construido al final del neolítico en el que las casas cuentan con muros de basalto bien escuadrados. En el lugar se han reconocido dos fases de ocupación por el momento, la más antigua de las cuales muestra varias reconstrucciones y superposiciones de casas. Entre el material arqueológico destaca la extraordinaria abundancia de puntas de proyectil y la presencia de restos que sugieren la implantación de formas económicas y sociales complejas, con intercambios a larga distancia y almacenamiento a gran escala. Las necrópolis megalíticas reconocidas destacan por la gran extensión de las áreas ocupadas, de decenas de km., y por la existencia de monumentos complejos que a veces asocian otro tipo de estructuras a las construcciones funerarias propiamente dichas.ABSTRACT: This paper presents the results of the fieldwork carried out within the Project "Archaeology to the West of Homs" in 2009. The sites at Jeftelik and Tell Marj have been excavated and the work surveying the megalithic necropolis in the área has continued. Jeftelik is an early Natufian site, with a probable habitation structure associated with a large amount of knapped lithic objects. Its characteristics and chronology question conventional models about the origin and expansion of the Natufian. Tell Marj is a late Neolithic settlement, with houses with well-built rectangular basalt walls. Two occupation phases have been identified to date, in which the older phase exhibits several stages of re-building and superimposition of houses. The archaeological material found includes large numbers of projectile points and remains suggesting the incorporation of complex economic and social forms, with long-distance exchange networks and large-scale storage. The megalithic necropolises that have been studied cover large areas, several tens of square kilometres. The genetic basis of asthma exacerbations has been studied in several populations, but no prior study has performed a multi-ancestry meta-analysis of genome-wide association studies (meta-GWAS) for this trait. We aimed to identify common genetic loci associated with asthma exacerbations across diverse populations and to assess their functional role in regulating DNA methylation and gene expression. Methods: A meta-GWAS of asthma exacerbations in 4989 Europeans, 2181 Hispanics/Latinos, 1250 Singaporean Chinese, and 972 African Americans analyzed 9.6 million genetic variants. Suggestively associated variants (p ≤ 5 × 10) were assessed for replication in 36,477 European and 1078 non-European asthma patients. Functional effects on DNA methylation were assessed in 595 Hispanic/Latino and African American asthma patients and in publicly available databases. The effect on gene expression was evaluated in silico. Results: One hundred and twenty-six independent variants were suggestively associated with asthma exacerbations in the discovery phase. Two variants independently replicated: rs12091010 located at vascular cell adhesion molecule-1/exostosin like glycosyltransferase-2 (VCAM1/EXTL2) (discovery: odds ratio (OR) = 0.82, p = 9.05 × 10 and replication: OR = 0.89, p = 5.35 × 10) and rs943126 from pantothenate kinase 1 (PANK1) (discovery: OR = 0.85, p = 3.10 × 10 and replication: OR = 0.89, p = 1.30 × 10). Both variants regulate gene expression of genes where they locate and DNA methylation levels of nearby genes in whole blood. Conclusions: This multi-ancestry study revealed novel suggestive regulatory loci for asthma exacerbations located in genomic regions participating in inflammation and host defense

In the multiple realms and layers that comprise the contemporary Spanish theatrical landscape, “crisis” would seem to be the word that most often lingers in the air, as though it were a common mantra, ready to roll off the tongue of so many theatre professionals with such enormous ease, and even enthusiasm, that one is prompted to wonder whether it might indeed be a miracle that the contemporary technological revolution – coupled with perpetual quandaries concerning public and private funding for the arts – had not by now brought an end to the evolution of the oldest of live arts, or, at the very least, an end to drama as we know it
