    Template coexistence in prebiotic vesicle models

    The coexistence of distinct templates is a common feature of the diverse proposals advanced to resolve the information crisis of prebiotic evolution. However, achieving robust template coexistence turned out to be such a difficult demand that only a class of models, the so-called package models, seems to have met it so far. Here we apply Wright's Island formulation of group selection to study the conditions for the coexistence of two distinct template types confined in packages (vesicles) of finite capacity. In particular, we show how selection acting at the level of the vesicles can neutralize the pressures towards the fixation of any one of the template types (random drift) and of the type with higher replication rate (deterministic competition). We give emphasis to the role of the distinct generation times of templates and vesicles as yet another obstacle to coexistence.Comment: 7 pages, 8 figure

    Short-Term Impacts of 2017 Western North American Wildfires On Meteorology, the Atmosphere\u27s Energy Budget, and Premature Mortality

    Western North American fires have been increasing in magnitude and severity over the last few decades. The complex coupling of fires with the atmospheric energy budget and meteorology creates short-term feedbacks on regional weather altering the amount of pollution to which Americans are exposed. Using a combination of model simulations and observations, this study shows that the severe fires in the summer of 2017 increased atmospheric aerosol concentrations leading to a cooling of the air at the surface, reductions in sensible heat fluxes, and a lowering of the planetary boundary layer height over land. This combination of lower-boundary layer height and increased aerosol pollution from the fires reduces air quality. We estimate that from start of August to end of October 2017, ~400 premature deaths occurred within the western US as a result of short-term exposure to elevated PM2.5 from fire smoke. As North America confronts a warming climate with more fires the short-term climate and pollution impacts of increased fire activity should be assessed within policy aimed to minimize impacts of climate change on society

    Distribution function approach to redshift space distortions

    We develop a phase space distribution function approach to redshift space distortions (RSD), in which the redshift space density can be written as a sum over velocity moments of the distribution function. These moments are density weighted and their lowest orders are density, momentum density, and stress energy density. The series expansion is convergent on large scales. We perform an expansion of these velocity moments into helicity modes, which are eigenmodes under rotation around the axis of Fourier mode direction, generalizing the scalar, vector, tensor decomposition of perturbations to an arbitrary order. We show that only equal helicity moments correlate and derive the angular dependence of the individual contributions to the redshift space power spectrum in terms of angle mu between wave vector and line of sight. We show that the dominant term of mu^2 dependence on large scales is the cross-correlation between the density and scalar part of momentum density, which can be related to the time derivative of the matter power spectrum. Additional terms contributing and dominating on small scales are the vector part of momentum density-momentum density correlations, the energy density-density correlations, and the scalar part of anisotropic stress density-density correlations. Similarly, we identify 7 terms contributing to mu^4 dependence. Some of the advantages of the distribution function approach are that the series expansion converges on large scales and remains valid in multi-stream situations. We finish with a brief discussion of implications for RSD in galaxies relative to dark matter, highlighting the issue of scale dependent bias of velocity moments correlators.Comment: 12 page

    Role of Fragment Higher Static Deformations in the Cold Binary Fission of 252^{252}Cf

    We study the binary cold fission of 252^{252}Cf in the frame of a cluster model where the fragments are born to their respective ground states and interact via a double-folded potential with deformation effects taken into account up to multipolarity λ=4\lambda=4. The preformation factors were neglected. In the case when the fragments are assumed to be spherical or with ground state quadrupole deformation, the QQ-value principle dictates the occurence of a narrow region around the double magic 132^{132}Sn, like in the case of cluster radioactivity. When the hexadecupole deformation is turned on, an entire mass-region of cold fission in the range 138 - 156 for the heavy fragment arise, in agreement with the experimental observations. This fact suggests that in the above mentioned mass-region, contrary to the usual cluster radioactivity where the daughter nucleus is always a neutron/proton (or both) closed shell or nearly closed shell spherical nucleus, the clusterization mechanism seems to be strongly influenced by the hexadecupole deformations rather than the QQ-value.Comment: 10 pages, 12 figure

    Comparable rates of secondary surgery between anterior cruciate ligament repair with suture tape augmentation and anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction

    Purpose The aim of this study was to determine the frequency of secondary surgery following anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) repair with suture tape augmentation in comparison to conventional hamstring ACL reconstruction. We hypothesised that there would be no differences between the groups. Methods This was a retrospective comparison study of patients undergoing ACL surgery between September 2011 and April 2018. Two hundred and 73 patients underwent ACL reconstruction using hamstring autograft. During the same timeframe, 137 patients with an acute proximal ACL rupture underwent ACL repair with suture tape augmentation. One patient was lost to follow-up in the ACL reconstruction group leaving 272 patients (99.6%) for the final analysis. In the ACL repair group, three patients were lost to follow-up leaving 134 patents (97.8%) for the final analysis. Secondary surgery was identified by contacting the patients by email/telephone and reviewing patient notes at the time of this analysis. Results Re-rupture occurred in 32 patients (11.8%) in the ACL reconstruction group compared to 22 patients (16.4%) in the ACL repair group (p = 0.194). Contralateral ACL rupture occurred in four patients (1.5%) in the ACL reconstruction group compared to three patients (2.2%) in the ACL repair group (p = 0.224). In the ACL reconstruction group, nine patients (3.3%) required secondary meniscal surgery whilst five patients (3.7%) required meniscal surgery in the ACL repair group (p = 0.830). Seven other operations were performed in the ACL reconstruction group (2.6%) compared to three other operations in the ACL repair group (2.2%) (p = 0.374). The overall number of patients undergoing secondary surgery in the ACL reconstruction group was 52 (19.1%) in comparison to 30 (22.4%) in the ACL repair group (p = 0.114). Conclusion ACL repair with suture tape augmentation for acute proximal ruptures demonstrated comparable rates of secondary surgery with hamstring ACL reconstruction

    Time-integrated luminosity recorded by the BABAR detector at the PEP-II e+e- collider

    This article is the Preprint version of the final published artcile which can be accessed at the link below.We describe a measurement of the time-integrated luminosity of the data collected by the BABAR experiment at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy e+e- collider at the ϒ(4S), ϒ(3S), and ϒ(2S) resonances and in a continuum region below each resonance. We measure the time-integrated luminosity by counting e+e-→e+e- and (for the ϒ(4S) only) e+e-→μ+μ- candidate events, allowing additional photons in the final state. We use data-corrected simulation to determine the cross-sections and reconstruction efficiencies for these processes, as well as the major backgrounds. Due to the large cross-sections of e+e-→e+e- and e+e-→μ+μ-, the statistical uncertainties of the measurement are substantially smaller than the systematic uncertainties. The dominant systematic uncertainties are due to observed differences between data and simulation, as well as uncertainties on the cross-sections. For data collected on the ϒ(3S) and ϒ(2S) resonances, an additional uncertainty arises due to ϒ→e+e-X background. For data collected off the ϒ resonances, we estimate an additional uncertainty due to time dependent efficiency variations, which can affect the short off-resonance runs.     Isolated tau leptons in events with large missing transverse momentum at HERA

    A search for events containing isolated tau leptons and large missing transverse momentum, not originating from the tau decay, has been performed with the ZEUS detector at the electron-proton collider HERA, using 130 pb^-1 of integrated luminosity. A search was made for isolated tracks coming from hadronic tau decays. Observables based on the internal jet structure were exploited to discriminate between tau decays and quark- or gluon-induced jets. Three tau candidates were found, while 0.40 +0.12 -0.13 were expected from Standard Model processes, such as charged current deep inelastic scattering and single W-boson production. To search for heavy-particle decays, a more restrictive selection was applied to isolate tau leptons produced together with a hadronic final state with high transverse momentum.     Search for displaced vertices arising from decays of new heavy particles in 7 TeV pp collisions at ATLAS

    We present the results of a search for new, heavy particles that decay at a significant distance from their production point into a final state containing charged hadrons in association with a high-momentum muon. The search is conducted in a pp-collision data sample with a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV and an integrated luminosity of 33 pb^-1 collected in 2010 by the ATLAS detector operating at the Large Hadron Collider. Production of such particles is expected in various scenarios of physics beyond the standard model. We observe no signal and place limits on the production cross-section of supersymmetric particles in an R-parity-violating scenario as a function of the neutralino lifetime.
