    Cuban Land Use and Conservation, from Rainforests to Coral Reefs

    Cuba is an ecological rarity in Latin America and the Caribbean. Its complex political and economic history shows limited disturbances, extinctions, pollution, and resource depletion by legal or de facto measures. Vast mangroves, wetlands, and forests play key roles in protecting biodiversity and reducing risks of hazards caused or aggravated by climate change. Cuba boasts coral reefs with some of the region’s greatest fish biomass and coral cover. Although Cuba has set aside major protected areas that safeguard a host of endemic species, its environment is by no means pristine. Its early history is one of deforestation and agricultural production for colonial and neo-colonial powers. Using remote sensing, we find Cuba’s land today is 45% devoted to agricultural, pasturage, and crop production. Roughly 77% of Cuba’s potential mangrove zone is presently in mangrove cover, much outside legal protection; this is likely the most intact Caribbean mangrove ecosystem and an important resource for coastal protection, fish nurseries, and wildlife habitat. Even the largest watersheds with the most agricultural land uses have a strong presence of forests, mangroves, and wetlands to buffer and filter runoff. This landscape could change with Cuba’s gradual reopening to foreign investment and growing popularity among tourists—trends that have devastated natural ecosystems throughout the Caribbean. Cuba is uniquely positioned to avoid and reverse ecosystem collapse if discontinuities between geopolitical and ecosystem functional units are be addressed, if protection and conservation of endemic species and ecosystems services accompany new development, and if a sound ecological restoration plan is enacted

    Disponibilidad de las máquinas para incrementar el nivel de servicio al cliente mediante la metodología TPM en la empresa SIMA Metalmecánica

    El objetivo general del estudio era determinar en qué medida la aplicación de un enfoque TPM para mejorar la disponibilidad de la máquina afectaría los niveles de servicio al cliente de una empresa metalmecánica. Los métodos utilizados fueron tipo de aplicación, método cuantitativo y diseño preexperimental. Los resultados muestran que el tiempo medio entre fallas, tiempo medio de reparación y disponibilidad de la máquina inicialmente fue de 21 horas, 12 horas ,67 horas y 62,33% respectivamente, esto indica que, en promedio por cada 100 horas de trabajo, las máquinas están activas 62.33 horas; a su vez se determinó que el 30% de los clientes externos consideran que la empresa metalmecánica es competente; el 40% dijeron que la empresa siempre comunica los avances y retrasos que haya en el proyecto y el 50% considera que la empresa maneja adecuadamente la gestión de conflictos que puede atravesar; para ello, se implementó cuatro pilares del mantenimiento productivo total dentro de la empresa metalmecánica, Mejoras enfocadas, mantenimiento preventivo, mantenimiento autónomo y capacitación de operadores para aumentar la disponibilidad de la máquina. Como conclusión, encontramos un aumento del 36,30% en la disponibilidad de máquinas

    Implementación de la presupuestación por resultados en la aprobación y revisión del diseño del Programa Presupuestal 0142 Acceso de Personas Adultas Mayores a Servicios Especializados entre los años 2016 y 2019

    La presente investigación analizó la eficacia de la implementación de la Presupuestación por Resultados, con base en el cumplimiento de los objetivos, en la aprobación y revisión del diseño del Programa Presupuestal 0142 Acceso De Personas Adultas Mayores a Servicios Especializados (en adelante PP del adulto mayor). En ese sentido, el trabajo inicia con la descripción de la población adulta mayor (en adelante PAM) según el enfoque de derechos y se le caracterizará de acuerdo al contexto peruano. Luego se procede a desarrollar la herramienta del Presupuesto por Resultados (en adelante el PpR), en términos de sus orígenes, antecedentes, definiciones, objetivos y herramientas. Luego de ello, se describe este sistema en la gestión pública peruana y se enfatiza en uno de los instrumentos que utiliza: los programas presupuestales (en adelante PP). Para ello, la tesis emplea el término el presupuesto por resultados (en adelante el PpR) haciendo referencia a la herramienta de gestión pública, mientras que cuando utilice el término la presupuestación por resultados hará referencia a la aplicación de esta metodología en el PP del Adulto Mayor. Una vez descrita la parte teórica y contextual se procede a desarrollar el capítulo analítico, el cual aborda los siguientes subcapítulos: i) La descripción del PP del adulto mayor; ii) ¿Existió una sola forma de implementación de la PpR en el Perú?, en el cual se presentan definiciones, objetivos y posturas para la implementación de la PpR, así como el cambio en la rigurosidad en la aprobación de PP; y por último, iii) La aprobación y revisión del diseño del PP del adulto mayor, para lo cual se describen las actividades previas a su creación, la evolución del PP a nivel de diagnóstico y diseño, y se realiza un análisis del cumplimiento de los objetivos de la implementación de la PpR en la aprobación y revisión del diseño del PP del caso de estudio.Tesi

    Long-Term Dabigatran Treatment Delays Alzheimer's Disease Pathogenesis in the TgCRND8 Mouse Model

    BACKGROUND: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a multifactorial neurodegenerative disorder with important vascular and hemostatic alterations that should be taken into account during diagnosis and treatment. OBJECTIVES: This study evaluates whether anticoagulation with dabigatran, a clinically approved oral direct thrombin inhibitor with a low risk of intracerebral hemorrhage, ameliorates AD pathogenesis in a transgenic mouse model of AD. METHODS: TgCRND8 AD mice and their wild-type littermates were treated for 1 year with dabigatran etexilate or placebo. Cognition was evaluated using the Barnes maze, and cerebral perfusion was examined by arterial spin labeling. At the molecular level, Western blot and histochemical analyses were performed to analyze fibrin content, amyloid burden, neuroinflammatory activity, and blood-brain barrier (BBB) integrity. RESULTS: Anticoagulation with dabigatran prevented memory decline, cerebral hypoperfusion, and toxic fibrin deposition in the AD mouse brain. In addition, long-term dabigatran treatment significantly reduced the extent of amyloid plaques, oligomers, phagocytic microglia, and infiltrated T cells by 23.7%, 51.8%, 31.3%, and 32.2%, respectively. Dabigatran anticoagulation also prevented AD-related astrogliosis and pericyte alterations, and maintained expression of the water channel aquaporin-4 at astrocytic perivascular endfeet of the BBB. CONCLUSIONS: Long-term anticoagulation with dabigatran inhibited thrombin and the formation of occlusive thrombi in AD; preserved cognition, cerebral perfusion, and BBB function; and ameliorated neuroinflammation and amyloid deposition in AD mice.     Dynamic Edematous Response of the Human Heart to Myocardial Infarction Implications for Assessing Myocardial Area at Risk and Salvage

    BACKGROUND: Clinical protocols aimed to characterize the post-myocardial infarction (MI) heart by cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) need to be standardized to take account of dynamic biological phenomena evolving early after the index ischemic event. Here, we evaluated the time course of edema reaction in patients with ST-segment-elevation MI by CMR and assessed its implications for myocardium-at-risk (MaR) quantification both in patients and in a large-animal model. METHODS: A total of 16 patients with anterior ST-segment-elevation MI successfully treated by primary angioplasty and 16 matched controls were prospectively recruited. In total, 94 clinical CMR examinations were performed: patients with ST-segment-elevation MI were serially scanned (within the first 3 hours after reperfusion and at 1, 4, 7, and 40 days), and controls were scanned only once. T2 relaxation time in the myocardium (T2 mapping) and the extent of edema on T2-weighted short-tau triple inversion-recovery (ie, CMR-MaR) were evaluated at all time points. In the experimental study, 20 pigs underwent 40-minute ischemia/reperfusion followed by serial CMR examinations at 120 minutes and 1, 4, and 7 days after reperfusion. Reference MaR was assessed by contrast-multidetector computed tomography during the index coronary occlusion. Generalized linear mixed models were used to take account of repeated measurements. RESULTS: In humans, T2 relaxation time in the ischemic myocardium declines significantly from early after reperfusion to 24 hours, and then increases up to day 4, reaching a plateau from which it decreases from day 7. Consequently, edema extent measured by T2-weighted short-tau triple inversion-recovery (CMR-MaR) varied with the timing of the CMR examination. These findings were confirmed in the experimental model by showing that only CMR-MaR values for day 4 and day 7 postreperfusion, coinciding with the deferred edema wave, were similar to values measured by reference contrast-multidetector computed tomography. CONCLUSIONS: Post-MI edema in patients follows a bimodal pattern that affects CMR estimates of MaR. Dynamic changes in post-ST-segment-elevation MI edema highlight the need for standardization of CMR timing to retrospectively delineate MaR and quantify myocardial salvage. According to the present clinical and experimental data, a time window between days 4 and 7 post-MI seems a good compromise solution for standardization.     A classical modelling of abandoned mine tailings' bioleaching by an autochthonous microbial culture

    The aim of this study was to study and model the bioleaching of abandoned mine tailings at different pulp densities 1–20% w/v by using an autochthonous mesophilic microbial culture. Because of the importance of the ferrous-iron oxidation as sub-process on the bioleaching of sulphide mineral ores, the ferrous-iron oxidation process by the autochthonous microbial culture was studied at different ferrous-iron concentrations. A mathematical model fitted to the experimental results and the main kinetic and stoichiometric parameters were determined, being the most relevant the maximum ferrous-iron oxidation rate 5.1 (mmol Fe2+/mmol C·h) and the biomass yield, 0.01 mmol C/mmol Fe2+, values very similar to that of mixed cultured dominated by Leptospirillum strains. This autochthonous culture was used in the bioleaching experiment carried out at different pulp densities, obtaining a maximum metal recovery in the tests carried out at 1% w/v, recovering a 90% of Cd, 60% of Zn, 30% of Cu, 25% Fe and 6% of Pb. Finally, the different leaching mechanisms were modelled by using the pyrite as ore model obtaining a bioleaching rate of 0.316 mmol Fe2+/(L·h) for the direct mechanisms and a bioleaching rate for the indirect and cooperative leaching mechanisms of 0.055 Fe2+/(L·h).El objetivo de este estudio fue estudiar y modelar la biolixiviación de relaves mineros abandonados a diferentes densidades de pulpa de 1 a 20 % p/v mediante el uso de un cultivo microbiano mesófilo autóctono. Debido a la importancia de la oxidación del hierro ferroso como subproceso en la biolixiviación de minerales sulfurados , se estudió el proceso de oxidación del hierro ferroso por parte del cultivo microbiano autóctono a diferentes concentraciones de hierro ferroso. Se ajustó un modelo matemático a los resultados experimentales y se determinaron los principales parámetros cinéticos y estequiométricos, siendo los más relevantes la velocidad máxima de oxidación del hierro ferroso 5,1 (mmol Fe 2+ /mmol C·h) y el rendimiento de biomasa , 0,01 mmol C/ mmolFe 2+, valores muy similares a los de cultivos mixtos dominados por cepas de Leptospirillum . Este cultivo autóctono se utilizó en el experimento de biolixiviación realizado a diferentes densidades de pulpa, obteniendo una máxima recuperación de metales en los ensayos realizados al 1% p/v, recuperando un 90% de Cd, 60% de Zn, 30% de Cu, 25% Fe y 6% de Pb. Finalmente, se modelaron los diferentes mecanismos de lixiviación utilizando el modelo pirita como mineral obteniendo una tasa de biolixiviación de 0.316 mmol Fe 2+ /(L·h) para los mecanismos directos y una tasa de biolixiviación para los mecanismos de lixiviación indirecta y cooperativa de 0.055 Fe 2 + /(L·h)

    Easy Wireless: broadband ad-hoc networking for emergency services

    Wireless ad-hoc networks will enable emergency services to continuously overview and act upon the actual status of the situation by retrieving and exchanging detailed up-to-date information between the rescue workers. Deployment of high-bandwidth, robust, self-organising ad-hoc networks will enable quicker response to typical what/where/when questions, than the more vulnerable low-bandwidth communication networks currently in use. This paper addresses a number of results of the Easy Wireless project that enable high bandwidth robust ad-hoc networking. Most of the concepts presented here have been experimentally verified and/or prototyped

    Molecular characterization of multidrug resistant Enterobacterales strains isolated from liver and kidney transplant recipients in Spain

    The objective of this study was to analyse the mechanisms of resistance to carbapenems and other extended-spectrum-?-lactams and to determine the genetic relatedness of multidrug-resistant Enterobacterales (MDR-E) causing colonization or infection in solid-organ transplantation (SOT) recipients. Prospective cohort study in kidney (n= 142), liver (n= 98) or kidney/pancreas (n= 7) transplant recipients between 2014 and 2018 in seven Spanish hospitals. We included 531 MDR-E isolates from rectal swabs obtained before transplantation and weekly for 4?6 weeks after the procedure and 10 MDR-E from clinical samples related to an infection. Overall, 46.2% Escherichia coli, 35.3% Klebsiella pneumoniae, 6.5% Enterobacter cloacae, 6.3% Citrobacter freundii and 5.7% other species were isolated. The number of patients with MDR-E colonization post-transplantation (176; 71.3%) was 2.5-fold the number of patients colonized pre-transplantation (71; 28.7%). Extended spectrum ?-lactamases (ESBLs) and carbapenemases were detected in 78.0% and 21.1% of MDR-E isolates respectively. In nine of the 247 (3.6%) transplant patients, the microorganism causing an infection was the same strain previously cultured from surveillance rectal swabs. In our study we have observed a low rate of MDR-E infection in colonized patients 4?6 weeks post-transplantation. E. coli producing blaCTX-M-G1 and K. pneumoniae harbouring blaOXA-48 alone or with blaCTX-M-G1 were the most prevalent MDR-E colonization strains in SOT recipients.Acknowledgements The authors thank Mª Jesús Lecea and Laura Álvarez for technical assistance.     Risk factors and outcome of COVID-19 in patients with hematological malignancies

    Background: Prognostic factors of poor outcome in patients with hematological malignancies and COVID-19 are poorly defned. Patients and methods: This was a Spanish transplant group and cell therapy (GETH) multicenter retrospective observational study, which included a large cohort of blood cancer patients with laboratory-confrmed SARS-CoV-2 infection through PCR assays from March 1st 2020 to May 15th 2020. Results: We included 367 pediatric and adult patients with hematological malignancies, including recipients of autologous (ASCT) (n=58) or allogeneic stem cell transplantation (allo-SCT) (n=65) from 41 hospitals in Spain. Median age of patients was 64 years (range 1-93.8). Recipients of ASCT and allo-SCT showed lower mortality rates (17% and 18%, respectively) compared to non-SCT patients (31%) (p=0.02). Prognostic factors identifed for day 45 overall mortality (OM) by logistic regression multivariate analysis included age>70 years [odds ratio (OR) 2.1, 95% con‑ fdence interval (CI) 1.2-3.8, p=0.011]; uncontrolled hematological malignancy (OR 2.9, 95% CI 1.6-5.2, p20 mg/dL (OR 3.3, 95% CI 1.7-6.4, p<0.0001). In multivariate analysis of 216 patients with very severe COVID-19, treatment with azithromycin or low dose corticosteroids was associated with lower OM (OR 0.42, 95% CI 0.2-0.89 and OR 0.31, 95% CI 0.11-0.87, respectively, p=0.02) whereas the use of hidroxycloroquine did not show signifcant improvement in OM (OR 0.64, 95% CI 0.37-1.1, P=0.1). Conclusions: In most patients with hematological malignancies COVID-19 mortality was directly driven by older age, disease status, performance status, as well as by immune (neutropenia) parameters and level of infammation (high CRP). Use of azithromycin and low dose corticosteroids may be of value in very severe COVID-19

    The Fourteenth Data Release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey: First Spectroscopic Data from the extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey and from the second phase of the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment

    The fourth generation of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS-IV) has been in operation since July 2014. This paper describes the second data release from this phase, and the fourteenth from SDSS overall (making this, Data Release Fourteen or DR14). This release makes public data taken by SDSS-IV in its first two years of operation (July 2014-2016). Like all previous SDSS releases, DR14 is cumulative, including the most recent reductions and calibrations of all data taken by SDSS since the first phase began operations in 2000. New in DR14 is the first public release of data from the extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS); the first data from the second phase of the Apache Point Observatory (APO) Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE-2), including stellar parameter estimates from an innovative data driven machine learning algorithm known as "The Cannon"; and almost twice as many data cubes from the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at APO (MaNGA) survey as were in the previous release (N = 2812 in total). This paper describes the location and format of the publicly available data from SDSS-IV surveys. We provide references to the important technical papers describing how these data have been taken (both targeting and observation details) and processed for scientific use. The SDSS website (www.sdss.org) has been updated for this release, and provides links to data downloads, as well as tutorials and examples of data use. SDSS-IV is planning to continue to collect astronomical data until 2020, and will be followed by SDSS-V.Comment: SDSS-IV collaboration alphabetical author data release paper.
