Solutions of the dispersion equation in the region of overlapping of zero-sound and particle-hole modes
In this paper the solutions of the zero-sound dispersion equation in the
random phase approximation (RPA) are considered. The calculation of the damped
zero-sound modes \omega_s(k) (complex frequency of excitation) in the nuclear
matter is presented. The method is based on the analytical structure of the
polarization operators \Pi(\omega,k). The solutions of two dispersion equations
with \Pi(\omega,k) and with Re(\Pi(\omega,k)) are compared. It is shown that in
the first case we obtain one-valued smooth solutions without "thumb-like"
forms. Considering the giant resonances in the nuclei as zero-sound excitations
we compare the experimental energy and escape width of the giant dipole
resonance (GDR) in the nucleus A with \omega_s(k) taken at a definite wave

New rotation periods in the Pleiades: Interpreting activity indicators
We present results of photometric monitoring campaigns of G, K and M dwarfs
in the Pleiades carried out in 1994, 1995 and 1996. We have determined rotation
periods for 18 stars in this cluster. In this paper, we examine the validity of
using observables such as X-ray activity and amplitude of photometric
variations as indicators of angular momentum loss. We report the discovery of
cool, slow rotators with high amplitudes of variation. This contradicts
previous conclusions about the use of amplitudes as an alternate diagnostic of
the saturation of angular momentum loss. We show that the X-ray data can be
used as observational indicators of mass-dependent saturation in the angular

Dust in the inner regions of debris disks around A stars
We present infrared interferometric observations of the inner regions of two
A-star debris disks, beta Leo and zeta Lep, using the FLUOR instrument at the
CHARA interferometer on both short (30 m) and long (>200 m) baselines. For the
target stars, the short baseline visibilities are lower than expected for the
stellar photosphere alone, while those of a check star, delta Leo, are not. We
interpret this visibility offset of a few percent as a near-infrared excess
arising from dust grains which, due to the instrumental field of view, must be
located within several AU of the central star. For beta Leo, the near-infrared
excess producing grains are spatially distinct from the dust which produces the
previously known mid-infrared excess. For zeta Lep, the near-infrared excess
may be spatially associated with the mid-infrared excess producing material. We
present simple geometric models which are consistent with the near and
mid-infrared excess and show that for both objects, the near-infrared producing
material is most consistent with a thin ring of dust near the sublimation
radius with typical grain sizes smaller than the nominal radiation pressure
blowout radius. Finally, we discuss possible origins of the near-infrared

Multi-Epoch Multiwavelength Spectra and Models for Blazar 3C~279
Of the blazars detected by EGRET in GeV gamma rays, 3C 279 is not only the
best-observed by EGRET, but also one of the best-monitored at lower
frequencies. We have assembled eleven spectra, from GHz radio through GeV gamma
rays, from the time intervals of EGRET observations. Although some of the data
have appeared in previous publications, most are new, including data taken
during the high states in early 1999 and early 2000. All of the spectra show
substantial gamma-ray contribution to the total luminosity of the object; in a
high state, the gamma-ray luminosity dominates over that at all other
frequencies by a factor of more than 10. There is no clear pattern of time
correlation; different bands do not always rise and fall together, even in the
optical, X-ray, and gamma-ray bands.
The spectra are modeled using a leptonic jet, with combined synchrotron
self-Compton + external Compton gamma-ray production. Spectral variability of
3C 279 is consistent with variations of the bulk Lorentz factor of the jet,
accompanied by changes in the spectral shape of the electron distribution. Our
modeling results are consistent with the UV spectrum of 3C 279 being dominated
by accretion disk radiation during times of low gamma-ray intensity.Comment: 39 pages including 13 figures; data tables not included (see ApJ web

A peculiar class of debris disks from Herschel/DUNES - A steep fall off in the far infrared
Aims. We present photometric data of debris disks around HIP 103389 (HD
199260), HIP 107350 (HN Peg, HD206860), and HIP 114948 (HD 219482), obtained in
the context of our Herschel Open Time Key Program DUNES (DUst around NEarby
Stars). Methods. We used Herschel/PACS to detect the thermal emission of the
three debris disks with a 3 sigma sensitivity of a few mJy at 100 um and 160
um. In addition, we obtained Herschel/PACS photometric data at 70 um for HIP
103389. Two different approaches are applied to reduce the Herschel data to
investigate the impact of data reduction on the photometry. We fit analytical
models to the available spectral energy distribution (SED) data. Results. The
SEDs of the three disks potentially exhibit an unusually steep decrease at
wavelengths > 70 um. We investigate the significance of the peculiar shape of
these SEDs and the impact on models of the disks provided it is real. Our
modeling reveals that such a steep decrease of the SEDs in the long wavelength
regime is inconsistent with a power-law exponent of the grain size distribution
-3.5 expected from a standard equilibrium collisional cascade. In contrast, a
very distinct range of grain sizes is implied to dominate the thermal emission
of such disks. However, we demonstrate that the understanding of the data of
faint sources obtained with Herschel is still incomplete and that the
significance of our results depends on the version of the data reduction
pipeline used. Conclusions. A new mechanism to produce the dust in the
presented debris disks, deviations from the conditions required for a standard
equilibrium collisional cascade (grain size exponent of -3.5), and/or
significantly different dust properties would be necessary to explain the

Cingulate cortex hypoperfusion predicts Alzheimer's disease in mild cognitive impairment
BACKGROUND: Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) was recently described as a heterogeneous group with a variety of clinical outcomes and high risk to develop Alzheimer's disease (AD). Regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) as measured by single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) was used to study the heterogeneity of MCI and to look for predictors of future development of AD. METHODS: rCBF was investigated in 54 MCI subjects using Tc-99m hexamethylpropyleneamine oxime (HMPAO). An automated analysis software (BRASS) was applied to analyze the relative blood flow (cerebellar ratios) of 24 cortical regions. After the baseline examination, the subjects were followed clinically for an average of two years. 17 subjects progressed to Alzheimer's disease (PMCI) and 37 subjects remained stable (SMCI). The baseline SPECT ratio values were compared between PMCI and SMCI. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis was applied for the discrimination of the two subgroups at baseline. RESULTS: The conversion rate of MCI to AD was 13.7% per year. PMCI had a significantly decreased rCBF in the left posterior cingulate cortex, as compared to SMCI. Left posterior cingulate rCBF ratios were entered into a logistic regression model for ROC curve calculation. The area under the ROC curve was 74%–76%, which indicates an acceptable discrimination between PMCI and SMCI at baseline. CONCLUSION: A reduced relative blood flow of the posterior cingulate gyrus could be found at least two years before the patients met the clinical diagnostic criteria of AD
Dopaminergic and Serotonergic Drug Use: A Nationwide Register-Based Study of Over 1 300 000 Older People
Objective: To investigate the use of dopaminergic and serotonergic drugs in elderly people. Methods: We analyzed data on age, sex and dispensed drugs for individuals aged 65 years in Sweden). Main outcome measures were dopaminergic (enhancing and/or lowering) and serotonergic (enhancing and/or lowering) drugs and combinations of these. Results: Dopaminergic and serotonergic drugs were used by 5.6 % and 13.2 % the participants, respectively. Female gender was related to use of both dopaminergic and, particularly, serotonergic drugs. Higher age was associated with use of dopamine lowering drugs and serotonergic drugs, whereas the association with use of dopamine enhancing drugs declined in the oldest old. The occurrence of combinations of dopaminergic and serotonergic drugs was generally low, with dopamine lowering + serotonin lowering drug the most common combination (1.6%). Female gender was associated with all of the combinations of dopaminergic and serotonergic drugs, whereas age showed a mixed pattern. Conclusion: Approximately one out of ten older patients uses serotonergic drugs and one out of twenty dopaminergic drugs. The frequent use of dopaminergic and serotonergic drugs in the elderly patients is a potential problem due to the fact that aging is associated with a down-regulation of both these monoaminergic systems. Search for direct stau production in events with two hadronic tau-leptons in root s=13 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector
A search for the direct production of the supersymmetric partners ofτ-leptons (staus) in final stateswith two hadronically decayingτ-leptons is presented. The analysis uses a dataset of pp collisions corresponding to an integrated luminosity of139fb−1, recorded with the ATLAS detector at the LargeHadron Collider at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. No significant deviation from the expected StandardModel background is observed. Limits are derived in scenarios of direct production of stau pairs with eachstau decaying into the stable lightest neutralino and oneτ-lepton in simplified models where the two staumass eigenstates are degenerate. Stau masses from 120 GeV to 390 GeV are excluded at 95% confidencelevel for a massless lightest neutralino
Measurement of the cross-section and charge asymmetry of bosons produced in proton-proton collisions at TeV with the ATLAS detector
This paper presents measurements of the and cross-sections and the associated charge asymmetry as a
function of the absolute pseudorapidity of the decay muon. The data were
collected in proton--proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV with
the ATLAS experiment at the LHC and correspond to a total integrated luminosity
of 20.2~\mbox{fb^{-1}}. The precision of the cross-section measurements
varies between 0.8% to 1.5% as a function of the pseudorapidity, excluding the
1.9% uncertainty on the integrated luminosity. The charge asymmetry is measured
with an uncertainty between 0.002 and 0.003. The results are compared with
predictions based on next-to-next-to-leading-order calculations with various
parton distribution functions and have the sensitivity to discriminate between
