Experimental characterisation of the mechanical properties and microstructure of Acrocomia mexicana fruit from the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico
A study of the mechanical properties and microstructure at different drying conditions of the Cocoyol fruit endocarp of Acrocomia Mexicana palm found in the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico was performed. Quasi-static uniaxial compression was carried out on endocarp samples. The experimental results showed that the fruit exhibited an average peak force and displacement at failure of 4.23 kN and 2.43 mm, respectively. The average energy absorbed by the fruits before failure was 6.06 J. Optical and scanning electron microscopy of cross-sections of the equatorial region revealed that the endocarp has complex hierarchical structure. The micrographs showed that the structure is made of bundles of randomly oriented tubes and bubble-like cells, showing entangled network of hollow micro channels, which are in the order of tens of microns. The results and the microstructure presented herein encourage further research for bioinspired man-made materials.Australian Research Council (ARC) Centre of Excellence for Design in Light Metals (CE0561574). Rate of Convergence to Barenblatt Profiles for the Fast Diffusion Equation
We study the asymptotic behaviour of positive solutions of the Cauchy problem
for the fast diffusion equation near the extinction time. We find a continuum
of rates of convergence to a self-similar profile. These rates depend
explicitly on the spatial decay rates of initial data
Cooperative WebLab in chemical engineering between France and Brazil: Validation of the methodology
A WebLab is an experiment operated remotely via Internet. Besides the strictly technical aspects of such an experiment, which may contribute to the learning of Chemical Engineering fundamentals, there is also important feedback when teams of students of two different countries are working together: the WebLab becomes an intercultural experience, enhancing the communication skills of the students. A WebLab between Universidade Federal de SĂŁo Carlos (DEQ/UFSCar) and the Ecole Nationale SupĂŠrieure dâIngĂŠnieurs en Arts Chimiques et Technologiques (ENSIACET) is presented in this work. A mass transfer experiment in a bench scale reactor (stirred and aerated) had to be studied by mixed teams, thus emulating challenges that will be common in future working environments. In order to perform the experiment, students in Brazil and in France were put into groups. The students had to make decisions about the procedure for executing the experiments. All the students were able to control the equipment, no matter where they were physically. Students communicated using video conference software. The students' and teachers' opinions of this experience were very positive. This methodology is an important contribution to the education of engineers in a world integrated by modern communication technologies
The McKean-Vlasov Equation in Finite Volume
We study the McKean--Vlasov equation on the finite tori of length scale
in --dimensions. We derive the necessary and sufficient conditions for the
existence of a phase transition, which are based on the criteria first
uncovered in \cite{GP} and \cite{KM}. Therein and in subsequent works, one
finds indications pointing to critical transitions at a particular model
dependent value, of the interaction parameter. We show that
the uniform density (which may be interpreted as the liquid phase) is
dynamically stable for and prove, abstractly, that a
{\it critical} transition must occur at . However for
this system we show that under generic conditions -- large, and
isotropic interactions -- the phase transition is in fact discontinuous and
occurs at some \theta\t < \theta^{\sharp}. Finally, for H--stable, bounded
interactions with discontinuous transitions we show that, with suitable
scaling, the \theta\t(L) tend to a definitive non--trivial limit as
Dispersal behaviour and settlement in an invasive bird: dispersers prefer their natal habitat
Habitat selection has profound consequences for individual fitness, but how do animals decide where to settle? The natal habitat preference induction (NHPI) hypothesis proposes that individuals choose habitats that exhibit similar environmental cues to those experienced in early life. In this study, we first examined juvenile movements and dispersal and then tested the NHPI hypothesis in the monk parakeet, Myiopsitta monachus, an invasive species that nests primarily in pine or palm trees in our study site. Juveniles were observed ranging extensively, but we found no relationship between ranging distances prior to dispersal and subsequent natal dispersal behaviour. As predicted by NHPI, we found that dispersed individuals displayed a significant preference for nesting in their natal tree type in their first year, irrespective of tree availability. The probability of changing tree type was not influenced by individual dispersal distance, the proportion of the natal tree type available or natal tree type. We found that adult birds undertaking breeding dispersal also showed a preference for the same tree type they dispersed from when making nest site selections, demonstrating that preferences can be maintained by adults during breeding dispersal movements. Finally, conspecific breeding success did not differ between palm and pine tree nests, and so did not provide a useful source of public information regarding the suitability of the two nesting substrates. These results contribute to our understanding of the drivers of habitat selection in both adults and juveniles and have implications for our understanding of dispersal patterns and range expansion in this worldwide invasive species
Novel Application of Cyclolipopeptide Amphisin: Feasibility Study as Additive to Remediate Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon (PAH) Contaminated Sediments
To decontaminate dredged harbor sediments by bioremediation or electromigration processes, adding biosurfactants could enhance the bioavailability or mobility of contaminants in an aqueous phase. Pure amphisin from Pseudomonas fluorescens DSS73 displays increased effectiveness in releasing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) strongly adsorbed to sediments when compared to a synthetic anionic surfactant. Amphisin production by the bacteria in the natural environment was also considered. DSS73âs growth is weakened by three model PAHs above saturation, but amphisin is still produced. Search for a W' boson decaying to a bottom quark and a top quark in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV
Results are presented from a search for a W' boson using a dataset
corresponding to 5.0 inverse femtobarns of integrated luminosity collected
during 2011 by the CMS experiment at the LHC in pp collisions at sqrt(s)=7 TeV.
The W' boson is modeled as a heavy W boson, but different scenarios for the
couplings to fermions are considered, involving both left-handed and
right-handed chiral projections of the fermions, as well as an arbitrary
mixture of the two. The search is performed in the decay channel W' to t b,
leading to a final state signature with a single lepton (e, mu), missing
transverse energy, and jets, at least one of which is tagged as a b-jet. A W'
boson that couples to fermions with the same coupling constant as the W, but to
the right-handed rather than left-handed chiral projections, is excluded for
masses below 1.85 TeV at the 95% confidence level. For the first time using LHC
data, constraints on the W' gauge coupling for a set of left- and right-handed
coupling combinations have been placed. These results represent a significant

Search for the standard model Higgs boson decaying into two photons in pp collisions at sqrt(s)=7 TeV
A search for a Higgs boson decaying into two photons is described. The
analysis is performed using a dataset recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC
from pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV, which corresponds to an
integrated luminosity of 4.8 inverse femtobarns. Limits are set on the cross
section of the standard model Higgs boson decaying to two photons. The expected
exclusion limit at 95% confidence level is between 1.4 and 2.4 times the
standard model cross section in the mass range between 110 and 150 GeV. The
analysis of the data excludes, at 95% confidence level, the standard model
Higgs boson decaying into two photons in the mass range 128 to 132 GeV. The
largest excess of events above the expected standard model background is
observed for a Higgs boson mass hypothesis of 124 GeV with a local significance
of 3.1 sigma. The global significance of observing an excess with a local
significance greater than 3.1 sigma anywhere in the search range 110-150 GeV is
estimated to be 1.8 sigma. More data are required to ascertain the origin of

Measurement of the Lambda(b) cross section and the anti-Lambda(b) to Lambda(b) ratio with Lambda(b) to J/Psi Lambda decays in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV
The Lambda(b) differential production cross section and the cross section
ratio anti-Lambda(b)/Lambda(b) are measured as functions of transverse momentum
pt(Lambda(b)) and rapidity abs(y(Lambda(b))) in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7
TeV using data collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC. The measurements are
based on Lambda(b) decays reconstructed in the exclusive final state J/Psi
Lambda, with the subsequent decays J/Psi to an opposite-sign muon pair and
Lambda to proton pion, using a data sample corresponding to an integrated
luminosity of 1.9 inverse femtobarns. The product of the cross section times
the branching ratio for Lambda(b) to J/Psi Lambda versus pt(Lambda(b)) falls
faster than that of b mesons. The measured value of the cross section times the
branching ratio for pt(Lambda(b)) > 10 GeV and abs(y(Lambda(b))) < 2.0 is 1.06
+/- 0.06 +/- 0.12 nb, and the integrated cross section ratio for
anti-Lambda(b)/Lambda(b) is 1.02 +/- 0.07 +/- 0.09, where the uncertainties are

Search for new physics in events with opposite-sign leptons, jets, and missing transverse energy in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV
A search is presented for physics beyond the standard model (BSM) in final
states with a pair of opposite-sign isolated leptons accompanied by jets and
missing transverse energy. The search uses LHC data recorded at a
center-of-mass energy sqrt(s) = 7 TeV with the CMS detector, corresponding to
an integrated luminosity of approximately 5 inverse femtobarns. Two
complementary search strategies are employed. The first probes models with a
specific dilepton production mechanism that leads to a characteristic kinematic
edge in the dilepton mass distribution. The second strategy probes models of
dilepton production with heavy, colored objects that decay to final states
including invisible particles, leading to very large hadronic activity and
missing transverse energy. No evidence for an event yield in excess of the
standard model expectations is found. Upper limits on the BSM contributions to
the signal regions are deduced from the results, which are used to exclude a
region of the parameter space of the constrained minimal supersymmetric
extension of the standard model. Additional information related to detector
efficiencies and response is provided to allow testing specific models of BSM
