    The Monitor Project: Stellar rotation at 13~Myr: I. A photometric monitoring survey of the young open cluster h~Per

    We aim at constraining the angular momentum evolution of low mass stars by measuring their rotation rates when they begin to evolve freely towards the ZAMS, i.e. after the disk accretion phase has stopped. We conducted a multi-site photometric monitoring of the young open cluster h Persei that has an age of ~13 Myr. The observations were done in the I-band using 4 different telescopes and the variability study is sensitive to periods from less than 0.2 day to 20 days. Rotation periods are derived for 586 candidate cluster members over the mass range 0.4<=M/Msun<=1.4. The rotation period distribution indicates a sligthly higher fraction of fast rotators for the lower mass objects, although the lower and upper envelopes of the rotation period distribution, located respectively at ~0.2-0.3d and ~10d, are remarkably flat over the whole mass range. We combine this period distribution with previous results obtained in younger and older clusters to model the angular momentum evolution of low mass stars during the PMS. The h Per cluster provides the first statistically robust estimate of the rotational period distribution of solar-type and lower mass stars at the end of the PMS accretion phase (>10 Myr).     A deep WISE search for very late type objects and the discovery of two halo/thick-disc T dwarfs : WISE 0013+0634 and WISE 0833+0052

All rights reservedA method is defined for identifying late-T and Y dwarfs in WISE down to low values of signal-to-noise. This requires a WISE detection only in the W2-band and uses the statistical properties of the WISE multiframe measurements and profile fit photometry to reject contamination resulting from non-point-like objects, variables and moving sources. To trace our desired parameter space, we use a control sample of isolated non-moving non-variable point sources from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), and identify a sample of 158 WISE W2-only candidates down to a signal-to-noise limit of eight. For signal-to-noise ranges >10 and 8-10, respectively, similar to 45 and similar to 90 per cent of our sample fall outside the selection criteria published by the WISE team, mainly due to the type of constraints placed on the number of individual W2 detections. We present follow-up of eight candidates and identify WISE 0013+0634 and WISE 0833+0052, T8 and T9 dwarfs with high proper motion (similar to 1.3 and similar to 1.8 arcsec yr(-1)). Both objects show a mid-infrared/near-infrared excess of similar to 1-1.5 mag and are K band suppressed. Distance estimates lead to space motion constraints that suggest halo (or at least thick disc) kinematics. We then assess the reduced proper motion diagram of WISE ultracool dwarfs, which suggests that late-T and Y dwarfs may have a higher thick-disc/halo population fraction than earlier objects.Peer reviewe

    Monitoring of alcohol consumption in primary care among adults with bipolar disorder:A cross-sectional and retrospective cohort study

    BACKGROUND: Screening for alcohol use disorders is an important priority in the healthcare of people with bipolar disorder, incentivised in UK primary care since 2011, through the Quality and Outcomes Framework (QOF). The extent of alcohol monitoring in primary care, and impact of QOF, is unknown. The aim was to examine recording of alcohol consumption in primary care.  METHODS: Poisson regression of biennial alcohol recording rates between 2000 and 2013 among 14,051 adults with bipolar disorder and 90,023 adults without severe mental illness (SMI), from 484 general practices contributing to The Health Improvement Network UK-wide primary care database.  RESULTS: Alcohol recording rates among people with bipolar disorder increased from 88.6 records per 1000 person-years (95% confidence interval 81.2-96.6) in 2000/2002 to 837.4 records per 1000 person-years (817.4-858.0) in 2011/2013; a more than nine-fold increase, mainly occurring after the introduction of the QOF incentive in 2011. In 2000/2002 alcohol recording levels among people with bipolar disorder were not statistically significantly different from those without SMI (adjusted rate ratio 0.96, 0.88-1.05). By 2011/2013, people with bipolar disorder were over four times as likely to have an alcohol record: adjusted rate ratio 4.45 (4.15-4.77).  LIMITATIONS: The routinely collected data may be incomplete. Alcohol data entered as free-text was not captured.  CONCLUSIONS: The marked rise in alcohol consumption recording highlights what can be achieved. It is most likely attributable to QOF, suggesting that QOF, or similar schemes, can be powerful tools in promoting aspects of healthcare

    Planets Around Low-Mass Stars (PALMS). II. A Low-Mass Companion to the Young M Dwarf GJ 3629 Separated By 0.2"

    We present the discovery of a 0.2" companion to the young M dwarf GJ 3629 as part of our high contrast adaptive optics imaging search for giant planets around low-mass stars with the Keck-II and Subaru telescopes. Two epochs of imaging confirm the pair is co-moving and reveal signs of orbital motion. The primary exhibits saturated X-ray emission, which together with its UV photometry from GALEX point to an age younger than ~300 Myr. At these ages the companion lies below the hydrogen burning limit with a model-dependent mass of 46 +/- 16 Mjup based on the system's photometric distance of 22 +/- 3 pc. Resolved YJHK photometry of the pair indicates a spectral type of M7 +/- 2 for GJ 3629 B. With a projected separation of 4.4 +/- 0.6 AU and an estimated orbital period of 21 +/- 5 yr, GJ 3629 AB is likely to yield a dynamical mass in the next several years, making it one of only a handful of brown dwarfs to have a measured mass and an age constrained from the stellar primary.Comment: Accepted for publication in Ap

    Prevalence of Dirofilaria immitis, Ehrlichia canis, Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato, Anaplasma spp. and Leishmania infantum in apparently healthy and CVBD-suspect dogs in Portugal - a national serological study

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Canine vector-borne diseases (CVBDs) are caused by a wide range of pathogens transmitted to dogs by arthropods including ticks and insects. Many CVBD-agents are of zoonotic concern, with dogs potentially serving as reservoirs and sentinels for human infections. The present study aimed at assessing the seroprevalence of infection with or exposure to <it>Dirofilaria immitis, Ehrlichia canis, Borrelia burgdorferi </it>sensu lato, <it>Anaplasma </it>spp. and <it>Leishmania infantum </it>in dogs in Portugal.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Based on 120 veterinary medical centres from all the regions of mainland and insular Portugal, 557 apparently healthy and 628 CVBD-suspect dogs were sampled. Serum, plasma or whole blood was tested for qualitative detection of <it>D. immitis </it>antigen and antibodies to <it>E. canis, B. burgdorferi </it>s. l., <it>Anaplasma </it>spp. and <it>L. infantum </it>with two commercial in-clinic enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay kits. Odds ratios (OR) were calculated by logistic regression analysis to identify independent risk factors of exposure to the vector-borne agents.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Total positivity levels to <it>D. immitis, E. canis, B. burgdorferi, Anaplasma </it>spp., <it>L. infantum</it>, one or more agents and mixed agents were 3.6%, 4.1%, 0.2%, 4.5%, 4.3%, 14.0% and 2.0% in the healthy group, and 8.9%, 16.4%, 0.5%, 9.2%, 25.2%, 46.3% and 11.6% in the clinically suspect group, respectively. Non-use of ectoparasiticides was a risk factor for positivity to one or more agents both in the apparently healthy (OR = 2.1) and CVBD-suspect (OR = 1.5) dogs. Seropositivity to <it>L. infantum </it>(OR = 7.6), <it>E. canis </it>(OR = 4.1) and <it>D. immitis </it>(OR = 2.4) were identified as risk factors for the presence of clinical signs compatible with CVBDs. Positivity to mixed agents was not found to be a risk factor for disease.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Dogs in Portugal are at risk of becoming infected with vector-borne pathogens, some of which are of zoonotic concern. CVBDs should be considered by practitioners and prophylactic measures must be put in place to protect dogs and limit the risk of transmission of vector-borne agents to humans. This study is expected to give veterinary and public health authorities an increased awareness about CVBDs in Portugal and to serve as a reference for future investigations and control actions.</p

    Measuring the Initial Mass Function of Low Mass Stars and Brown Dwarfs

    I review efforts to determine the form and any lower limit to the initial mass function in the Galactic disk, using observations of low-mass stars and brown dwarfs in the field, young clusters and star forming regions. I focus on the methodologies that have been used and the uncertainties that exist due to observational limitations and to systematic uncertainties in calibrations and theoretical models. I conclude that whilst it is possible that the low-mass IMFs deduced from the field and most young clusters are similar, there are too many problems to be sure; there are examples of low-mass cluster IMFs that appear to be very discrepant and the IMFs for brown dwarfs in the field and young clusters have yet to be reconciled convincingly.Comment: From a series of lectures presented at the Evry-Schatzman school on Low-mass stars and the transition from stars to brown dwarfs, edited by C.     An Open Drug Discovery Competition: Experimental Validation of Predictive Models in a Series of Novel Antimalarials.

    The Open Source Malaria (OSM) consortium is developing compounds that kill the human malaria parasite, Plasmodium falciparum, by targeting PfATP4, an essential ion pump on the parasite surface. The structure of PfATP4 has not been determined. Here, we describe a public competition created to develop a predictive model for the identification of PfATP4 inhibitors, thereby reducing project costs associated with the synthesis of inactive compounds. Competition participants could see all entries as they were submitted. In the final round, featuring private sector entrants specializing in machine learning methods, the best-performing models were used to predict novel inhibitors, of which several were synthesized and evaluated against the parasite. Half possessed biological activity, with one featuring a motif that the human chemists familiar with this series would have dismissed as "ill-advised". Since all data and participant interactions remain in the public domain, this research project "lives" and may be improved by others

    The evolution of pattern camouflage strategies in waterfowl and game birds.

A broad survey of the literature has revealed that different patterns have distinct functions. Irregular patterns (e.g., stipples) typically function in static camouflage, whereas regular patterns (e.g., stripes) have a dual function in both motion camouflage and communication. Moreover, irregular and regular patterns located on different body regions ("bimodal" patterning) can provide an effective compromise between camouflage and communication and/or enhanced concealment via both static and motion camouflage. Here, we compared the frequency of these three pattern types and traced their evolutionary history using Bayesian comparative modeling in aquatic waterfowl (Anseriformes: 118 spp.), which typically escape predators by flight, and terrestrial game birds (Galliformes: 170 spp.), which mainly use a "sit and hide" strategy to avoid predation. Given these life histories, we predicted that selection would favor regular patterning in Anseriformes and irregular or bimodal patterning in Galliformes and that pattern function complexity should increase over the course of evolution. Regular patterns were predominant in Anseriformes whereas regular and bimodal patterns were most frequent in Galliformes, suggesting that patterns with multiple functions are broadly favored by selection over patterns with a single function in static camouflage. We found that the first patterns to evolve were either regular or bimodal in Anseriformes and either irregular or regular in Galliformes. In both orders, irregular patterns could evolve into regular patterns but not the reverse. Our hypothesis of increasing complexity in pattern camouflage function was supported in Galliformes but not in Anseriformes. These results reveal a trajectory of pattern evolution linked to increasing function complexity in Galliformes although not in Anseriformes, suggesting that both ecology and function complexity can have a profound influence on pattern evolution.This work was funded by a Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council studentship to K.L.A.M. and an Australian Postgraduate Award and the Cambridge Overseas Trust to T-LG
