Measuring Pancharatnam's relative phase for SO(3) evolutions using spin polarimetry
In polarimetry, a superposition of internal quantal states is exposed to a
single Hamiltonian and information about the evolution of the quantal states is
inferred from projection measurements on the final superposition. In this
framework, we here extend the polarimetric test of Pancharatnam's relative
phase for spin proposed by Wagh and Rakhecha [Phys. Lett. A {\bf 197},
112 (1995)] to spin undergoing noncyclic SO(3) evolution. We
demonstrate that the output intensity for higher spin values is a polynomial
function of the corresponding spin intensity. We further propose a
general method to extract the noncyclic SO(3) phase and visibility by rigid
translation of two spin flippers. Polarimetry on higher spin states
may in practice be done with spin polarized atomic beams.Comment: New title, minor corrections, journal reference adde
Geometric phases for generalized squeezed coherent states
A simple technique is used to obtain a general formula for the Berry phase
(and the corresponding Hannay angle) for an arbitrary Hamiltonian with an
equally-spaced spectrum and appropriate ladder operators connecting the
eigenstates. The formalism is first applied to a general deformation of the
oscillator involving both squeezing and displacement. Earlier results are shown
to emerge as special cases. The analysis is then extended to multiphoton
squeezed coherent states and the corresponding anholonomies deduced.Comment: 15 page
Tunable Lyapunov exponent in inverse magnetic billiards
The stability properties of the classical trajectories of charged particles
are investigated in a two dimensional stadium-shaped inverse magnetic domain,
where the magnetic field is zero inside the stadium domain and constant
outside. In the case of infinite magnetic field the dynamics of the system is
the same as in the Bunimovich billiard, i.e., ergodic and mixing. However, for
weaker magnetic fields the phase space becomes mixed and the chaotic part
gradually shrinks. The numerical measurements of the Lyapunov exponent
(performed with a novel method) and the integrable/chaotic phase space volume
ratio show that both quantities can be smoothly tuned by varying the external
magnetic field. A possible experimental realization of the arrangement is also
discussed.Comment: 4 pages, 6 figure
Application of direct bioautography and SPME-GC-MS for the study of antibacterial chamomile ingredients
The isolation and characterization of antibacterial chamomile components were performed by the use of direct bioautography and solid phase microextraction (SPME)-GC-MS. Four ingredients, active against Vibrio fischeri, were identified as the polyacetylene geometric isomers cis- and trans-spiroethers, the coumarin related herniarin, and the sesquiterpene alcohol (-)-alpha-bisabolol
Surprises in the Orbital Magnetic Moment and g-Factor of the Dynamic Jahn-Teller Ion C_{60}^-
We calculate the magnetic susceptibility and g-factor of the isolated
C_{60}^- ion at zero temperature, with a proper treatment of the dynamical
Jahn-Teller effect, and of the associated orbital angular momentum, Ham-reduced
gyromagnetic ratio, and molecular spin-orbit coupling. A number of surprises
emerge. First, the predicted molecular spin-orbit splitting is two orders of
magnitude smaller than in the bare carbon atom, due to the large radius of
curvature of the molecule. Second, this reduced spin-orbit splitting is
comparable to Zeeman energies, for instance, in X-band EPR at 3.39KGauss, and a
field dependence of the g-factor is predicted. Third, the orbital gyromagnetic
factor is strongly reduced by vibron coupling, and so therefore are the
effective weak-field g-factors of all low-lying states. In particular, the
ground-state doublet of C_{60}^- is predicted to show a negative g-factor of
\sim -0.1.Comment: 19 pages RevTex, 2 postscript figures include
Quantum phases and dynamics of geometric phase in a quantum spin chain system under linear quench
We study the quantum phases of anisotropic XY spin chain system in presence
and absence of adiabatic quench. A connection between geometric phase and
criticality is established from the dynamical behaviour of the geometric phase
for a quench induced quantum phase transition in a quantum spin chain. We
predict XX criticality associated with a sequence of non-contractible geometric
phases.Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures, one reference added. arXiv admin note:

Targeted resequencing identifies genes with recurrent variation in cerebral palsy
A growing body of evidence points to a considerable and heterogeneous genetic aetiology of cerebral palsy (CP). To identify recurrently variant CP genes, we designed a custom gene panel of 112 candidate genes. We tested 366 clinically unselected singleton cases with CP, including 271 cases not previously examined using next-generation sequencing technologies. Overall, 5.2% of the naïve cases (14/271) harboured a genetic variant of clinical significance in a known disease gene, with a further 4.8% of individuals (13/271) having a variant in a candidate gene classified as intolerant to variation. In the aggregate cohort of individuals from this study and our previous genomic investigations, six recurrently hit genes contributed at least 4% of disease burden to CP: COL4A1, TUBA1A, AGAP1, L1CAM, MAOB and KIF1A. Significance of Rare VAriants (SORVA) burden analysis identified four genes with a genome-wide significant burden of variants, AGAP1, ERLIN1, ZDHHC9 and PROC, of which we functionally assessed AGAP1 using a zebrafish model. Our investigations reinforce that CP is a heterogeneous neurodevelopmental disorder with known as well as novel genetic determinants.C. L. van Eyk, M. A. Corbett, M. S. B. Frank, D. L. Webber, M. Horizontal deflection of single particle in a paramagnetic fluid
This paper describes the horizontal deflection behaviour of a single particle in paramagnetic fluids under a high-gradient superconducting magnetic field. A glass box was designed to carry out experiments and test assumptions. It was found that the particles were deflected away from the magnet bore centre and particles with different density and/or susceptibility settled at a certain position on the container floor due to the combined forces of gravity and magneto-Archimedes as well as lateral buoyant (displacement) force. Matlab was chosen to simulate the movement of the particle in the magnetic fluid, the simulation results were in good accordance with experimental data. The results presented here, though, are still very much in their infancy, which could potentially form the basis of a new approach to separating materials based on a combination of density and susceptibility. Search for direct production of charginos and neutralinos in events with three leptons and missing transverse momentum in √s = 7 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector
A search for the direct production of charginos and neutralinos in final states with three electrons or muons and missing transverse momentum is presented. The analysis is based on 4.7 fb−1 of proton–proton collision data delivered by the Large Hadron Collider and recorded with the ATLAS detector. Observations are consistent with Standard Model expectations in three signal regions that are either depleted or enriched in Z-boson decays. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are set in R-parity conserving phenomenological minimal supersymmetric models and in simplified models, significantly extending previous results
Search for displaced vertices arising from decays of new heavy particles in 7 TeV pp collisions at ATLAS
We present the results of a search for new, heavy particles that decay at a
significant distance from their production point into a final state containing
charged hadrons in association with a high-momentum muon. The search is
conducted in a pp-collision data sample with a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV
and an integrated luminosity of 33 pb^-1 collected in 2010 by the ATLAS
detector operating at the Large Hadron Collider. Production of such particles
is expected in various scenarios of physics beyond the standard model. We
observe no signal and place limits on the production cross-section of
supersymmetric particles in an R-parity-violating scenario as a function of the
neutralino lifetime. Limits are presented for different squark and neutralino
masses, enabling extension of the limits to a variety of other models.Comment: 8 pages plus author list (20 pages total), 8 figures, 1 table, final
