    Clonal chromosomal mosaicism and loss of chromosome Y in elderly men increase vulnerability for SARS-CoV-2

    The pandemic caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2, COVID-19) had an estimated overall case fatality ratio of 1.38% (pre-vaccination), being 53% higher in males and increasing exponentially with age. Among 9578 individuals diagnosed with COVID-19 in the SCOURGE study, we found 133 cases (1.42%) with detectable clonal mosaicism for chromosome alterations (mCA) and 226 males (5.08%) with acquired loss of chromosome Y (LOY). Individuals with clonal mosaic events (mCA and/or LOY) showed a 54% increase in the risk of COVID-19 lethality. LOY is associated with transcriptomic biomarkers of immune dysfunction, pro-coagulation activity and cardiovascular risk. Interferon-induced genes involved in the initial immune response to SARS-CoV-2 are also down-regulated in LOY. Thus, mCA and LOY underlie at least part of the sex-biased severity and mortality of COVID-19 in aging patients. Given its potential therapeutic and prognostic relevance, evaluation of clonal mosaicism should be implemented as biomarker of COVID-19 severity in elderly people.     Search for dark matter produced in association with bottom or top quarks in √s = 13 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector

    A search for weakly interacting massive particle dark matter produced in association with bottom or top quarks is presented. Final states containing third-generation quarks and miss- ing transverse momentum are considered. The analysis uses 36.1 fb−1 of proton–proton collision data recorded by the ATLAS experiment at √s = 13 TeV in 2015 and 2016. No significant excess of events above the estimated backgrounds is observed. The results are in- terpreted in the framework of simplified models of spin-0 dark-matter mediators. For colour- neutral spin-0 mediators produced in association with top quarks and decaying into a pair of dark-matter particles, mediator masses below 50 GeV are excluded assuming a dark-matter candidate mass of 1 GeV and unitary couplings. For scalar and pseudoscalar mediators produced in association with bottom quarks, the search sets limits on the production cross- section of 300 times the predicted rate for mediators with masses between 10 and 50 GeV and assuming a dark-matter mass of 1 GeV and unitary coupling. Constraints on colour- charged scalar simplified models are also presented. Assuming a dark-matter particle mass of 35 GeV, mediator particles with mass below 1.1 TeV are excluded for couplings yielding a dark-matter relic density consistent with measurements

    El desbridamiento de una lesión constituye una etapa obligatoria para la evolución favorable de una lesión ya sea aguda o crónica. Un estudio publicado en este año 2009 muestra, una vez más, que la infección en pacientes con lesiones por presión importantes puede desembocar en una sepsis, con una mortalidad del 68% a los 6 meses. Presentamos el caso de un varón de 67 años de edad con múltiples úlceras por presión asociadas a septicemia. Para el desbridamiento de las lesiones utilizamos la combinación de un apósito antimicrobiano de tecnología Hydrofiber con plata iónica impregnado en una solución de polihexanida betaína. Observamos una excelente evolución y la obtención del cierre completo de las úlceras por presión presentes

    Transcultural Validation of a Spanish Version of the Quality of Life in Epidermolysis Bullosa Questionnaire

    Introduction: Epidermolysis bullosa (EB) is a relatively infrequent genodermatosis for which there is still no cure, and which impacts the quality of life of those that are affected by it. The Quality of Life evaluation in Epidermolysis Bullosa (QoLEB) questionnaire was specifically developed for English-speaking persons with EB. Objectives: To undertake the transcultural adaptation and analysis of the psychometric properties of a Spanish version of the QoLEB questionnaire. Method: We designed an observational study to implement the process of translation and validation of the scale in accordance with World Health Organisation guidelines. We assessed the content validity of the Spanish version with the participation of 33 adult patients who presented with four principal subtypes of EB. The subjects were examined and evaluated using the QoLEB and Short Form-36 (SF-36) questionnaires. Results: The Spanish version of the QoLEB displayed excellent internal consistency and content validity, α = 0.91. Test–retest reliability was likewise excellent (ps = 0.93), as was the reliability among subtypes (range ps = 0.82–0.93). The functional part of the QoLEB correlated well with the SF-36 physical component summary (ps = 0.70). The emotional QoLEB was moderately correlated with the SF-36 mental component summary (ps = 0.49). Significant discriminant validity existed between the global score of the questionnaire (p = 0.033) and the functional scale (p = 0.003). Conclusions: The Spanish version of the QoLEB questionnaire can be recommended for use in any subsequent studies seeking to assess the efficacy of possible treatments and care programmes in this group

    Abordaje interdisciplinar en el tratamiento de las heridas en epidermólisis bullosa

    Epidermolysis bullosa (EB) is a term that includes a clinically and genetically heterogeneous group of bleb diseases of low prevalence, whose main characteristic is an extreme fragility of the skin and the mucous membranes. Those affected by EB can present problems and complications at very different levels, which must be understood and addressed from a position beyond mere organic pathology. In this article, the EB is approached from an interdisciplinary approach, making known the work of the DEBRA-Spain association for the care of the person affected by EB.La Epidermólisis bullosa (EB) es un término que engloba a un grupo clínico y genéticamente heterogéneo de enfermedades ampollosas de baja prevalencia, cuya principal característica es una extrema fragilidad de la piel y de las membranas mucosas. Los afectados de EB pueden presentar problemas y complicaciones a muy diferentes niveles que se deben entender y afrontar desde una posición más allá de la mera patología orgá- nica. En este artículo se aborda la EB desde un enfoque interdisciplinar dando a conocer la labor de la asociación DEBRA-España para el cuidado de la persona afectada de EB
