    Infrared Spectra of Some Troponoid and Aromatic Compounds adsorbed on Column Chromatogram

    Some examinations were made on infrared absorption spectra of substances as adsorbed on silica gel or activated alumina in column chromatography. From the results obtained with several troponoid and aromatic compounds, it was found that the spectrum of the adsorbed substance can be obtained by measuring the adsorbent carrying the substance by the potassium bromide disk method when the amount adsorbed is comparatively large. This method will be useful for the identification of organic compounds and studies on the mode of their adsorption. Results obtained from some troponoid and aromatic compounds possessing hydroxyl, amino, or carbonyl as the functional group indicated that there is no drastic change in their spectra when using silica gel. Phenol adsorbed on alumina already showed the spectrum of Ph-O^- ion type. The ν(C=O) band of adsorbed ketones shifted to a lower frequency region

    Development of Radiation Hard N+-on-P Silicon Microstrip Sensors for Super LHC

    Radiation tolerance up to 1015 1-MeV neq/cm2 is required for the silicon microstrip sensors to be operated at the Super LHC experiment. As a candidate for such sensors, we are investigating non-inverting n+-on-p sensors. We manufactured sample sensors of 1 times 1 cm in 4" and 6" processes with implementing different interstrip electrical isolation structures. Industrial high resistive p-type wafers from FZ and MCZ growth are tested. They are different in crystal orientations lang100rang and lang111rang with different wafer resistivities. The sensors were irradiated with 70-MeV protons and characterized in views of the leakage current increase, noise figures, electrical strip isolation, full depletion voltage evolution, and charge collection efficiency

    Genetic association between the interleukin-2 receptor-alpha gene and mode of onset of type 1 diabetes in the Japanese population.

    CONTEXT/OBJECTIVE: The IL-2 receptor-alpha (IL2RA), also known as CD25, is expressed on the regulatory T cells, which play an important role in the control of immune responses and the maintenance of immune homeostasis. Our objective was to determine whether variants in the IL2RA gene are associated with type 1 diabetes in the Japanese population. DESIGN/PATIENTS: We genotyped the four single-nucleotide polymorphisms (rs706778, rs3118470, ss52580101, and rs11594656) of the IL2RA in 885 patients with type 1 diabetes and 606 control subjects of Japanese origin. The allele and genotype frequencies were examined in the patient groups stratified by their mode of onset in a case-control study. RESULTS: We found evidence of association with acute-onset, but not slow-onset and fulminant, type 1 diabetes for two of the four single-nucleotide polymorphisms genotyped (rs706778 and rs3118470). The rs706778 A allele and the rs3118470 G allele were associated with an increased disease risk [odds ratio (OR) for rs706778 AA genotype 1.54, P = 4.2 x 10(-4) and OR for rs3118470 GG genotype 1.50, P = 0.0019, respectively]. Furthermore, the A-G haplotype was associated with increased type 1 diabetes risk in the acute-onset form (OR 1.30, P = 0.002). CONCLUSIONS: The present data confirm the type 1 diabetes association with IL2RA and provide evidence that the different contributions of the IL2RA in the susceptibility to acute-onset and other forms of type 1 diabetes in the Japanese population

    Milrinone-induced postconditioning reduces hepatic ischemia-reperfusion injury in rats: the roles of phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase and nitric oxide

    Background Ischemic postconditioning (PostC) protects the liver against ischemia-reperfusion (IR) injury. Milrinone, a phosphodiesterase 3 inhibitor, has been reported to exhibit preconditioning properties against hepatic IR injury; however, its PostC properties remain unknown. This study investigated whether milrinone has PostC properties against hepatic IR injury and the roles of phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K) and nitric oxide synthase (NOS). Materials and methods Male Wistar rats were separated into six groups: (1) group S: animals that underwent sham operation without ischemia, (2) group C: ischemia followed by reperfusion with no other intervention, (3) group M: milrinone administered immediately after reperfusion, (4) group MW: wortmannin, a PI3K inhibitor, injected before milrinone administration, (5) group MN: l-NAME, a NOS inhibitor, injected before milrinone administration, and (6) group MD, milrinone administered 30 min after reperfusion. Except for group S, all groups underwent 1 h of warm ischemia of median and left lateral lobes, followed by 5 h of reperfusion. Biochemical liver function analysis and histologic examination were performed. Results Serum aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, and lactic dehydrogenase levels, histologic damage scores, and apoptotic rate in group M were significantly lower than those in group C. The inhibition of PI3K or NOS prevented this protective effect. Milrinone administered 30 min after reperfusion did not show obvious protective effects. Conclusions Milrinone-induced PostC protects against hepatic IR injury when it is administered immediately after reperfusion, and PI3K and NOS may play an important role in this protective effect

    Search for dark matter produced in association with bottom or top quarks in √s = 13 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector

    A search for weakly interacting massive particle dark matter produced in association with bottom or top quarks is presented. Final states containing third-generation quarks and miss- ing transverse momentum are considered. The analysis uses 36.1 fb−1 of proton–proton collision data recorded by the ATLAS experiment at √s = 13 TeV in 2015 and 2016. No significant excess of events above the estimated backgrounds is observed. The results are in- terpreted in the framework of simplified models of spin-0 dark-matter mediators. For colour- neutral spin-0 mediators produced in association with top quarks and decaying into a pair of dark-matter particles, mediator masses below 50 GeV are excluded assuming a dark-matter candidate mass of 1 GeV and unitary couplings. For scalar and pseudoscalar mediators produced in association with bottom quarks, the search sets limits on the production cross- section of 300 times the predicted rate for mediators with masses between 10 and 50 GeV and assuming a dark-matter mass of 1 GeV and unitary coupling. Constraints on colour- charged scalar simplified models are also presented. Assuming a dark-matter particle mass of 35 GeV, mediator particles with mass below 1.1 TeV are excluded for couplings yielding a dark-matter relic density consistent with measurements
