    A leitura e a aprendizagem no 1º e 2º ciclos do ensino básico

    Este relatório pretende descrever o meu percurso enquanto estagiária em dois contextos diferentes: 1.º e 2.º Ciclos do Ensino Básico. Foi elaborado como parte integrante da unidade curricular de Prática Educativa, da Escola Superior de Educação de Coimbra. Para a construção deste relatório final foram consideradas três partes. Na primeira parte será apresentada uma investigação sobre a relação entre os hábitos de leitura no 1º ano de escolaridade e a literacia emergente, através da análise dos dados recolhidos por inquérito e do aprofundamento do que é, afinal, a literacia emergente. A segunda parte do relatório é constituído pelas experiências vivenciadas no contexto do 1.º CEB, sem esquecer a caraterização da instituição interventiva, a fundamentação das ações tomadas e a reflexão em torno do meu percurso de formação. Por sua vez, a terceira parte vai ao encontro de todos os tópicos abordados na segunda parte, mas no contexto de 2.º CEB, quatro áreas disciplinares distintas: português, matemática, história e geografia de Portugal e ciências naturai

    Smart firefighters PPE: Impact of phase change materials

    Considering the high level of heat and flame exposure firefighters encounter while performing their work activities, personal protective equipment (PPE) is of the utmost importance to enhance their safety. Phase change materials (PCMs) are known as advanced materials able to absorb high amounts of thermal energy, with the potential to increase the thermal performance of protective clothing. In this work, a PCM-vest was developed for the first time, and its thermal performance was evaluated. A three-stage approach was followed: (1) at a small scale in the laboratory, the effect of different encapsulated PCMs on a multilayer assembly performance was evaluated; (2) in the laboratory, the essential requirements of heat and flame tests were assessed; and (3) in a simulated urban fire, the thermal performance of three different PCM-vests (different textiles and designs) was studied. As the main conclusions, the PCMs significantly affected the heating rate of the multilayer assembly, particularly when a PCM with higher latent heat was used. In some cases, the heat transfer index (HTI) doubled by comparison with the sample without PCMs. As a drawback and as expected, the cooling time was increased. The PCM-vest sample ensured the requirements of the heat and flame tests. Through this study, the positive impact of using PCMs to enhance the heat protection of conventional PPE can be highlighted

    Association of platelet-rich plasma and auto-crosslinked hyaluronic acid microparticles: approach for orthopedic application

    Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) associated with high molecular weight hyaluronic acid (HA) has been clinically used for tissue regeneration in orthopedics. Despite the recognized beneficial clinical outcomes (e.g., early pain control, improvement of patients functional limitation and longer-term effectiveness compared to PRP and HA alone in mild and moderate osteoarthritis treatments), its use is still challenging and controversial due to lack of standardization of association practical protocols. Moreover, most studies neglect the matrix structure, that generates the ultimate properties of the association among platelets, fibrin network and the microparticles. In the present work, we aimed to analyze the influence of the PRP/HA association with a controlled matrix structure on the stability, rheological behavior, release of growth factors and in vitro proliferation of human adipose-derived mesenchymal cells (h-AdMSCs). The attenuation of the negative charge of HA was also evaluated. Pure PRP (P-PRP) (i.e., plasma enriched with platelets and poor in leukocytes) was prepared by centrifugation and activated with serum and calcium chloride (AP-PRP). Autocrosslinked hyaluronic acid (AHA) was prepared by organocatalyzed auto-esterification and structured in microparticles (MPAHA) by shearing. The attenuation of the negative charge of MPAHA was performed with chitosan (CHT) by polyelectrolyte complexation yielding MPAHA-CHT. The results showed that microparticles (MPs) have viscoelastic properties, extrusion force and swelling ratio appropriate for injectable applications. The association of AP-PRP with the controlled structure of MPAHA and MPAHA-CHT formed a matrix composed of platelets and of a fibrin network with fibers around 160 nm located preferably on the surface of the MPs with an average diameter of 250 m. Moreover, AP-PRP/MPAHA and AP-PRP/MPAHA-CHT associations were non-toxic and supported controlled growth factor (PDGF-AB and TGF-1) release and in vitro proliferation of h-AdMSC with a similar pattern to that of AP-PRP alone. The best h-AdMSC proliferation was obtained with the AP-PRP/MPAHA-CHT75:25 indicating that the charge attenuation improved the cell proliferation. This immunological pattern of exhaustion of immune resources favors prompt, potentially curative, therapeutic interventions in CGD patients, namely, stem-cell transplantation or gene therapy. T-cell evaluation is usually neglected during patients’ follow-up, although T-cell depletion has been reported in CGD through unknown mechanisms. We describe here a 36-year-old patient with X-linked CGD with severe CD4 T-cell depletion &lt;200 CD4 T-cells/μl, providing insights into the mechanisms that underlie T-cell loss in the context of oxidative burst defects.     Grau de incapacidade física na população idosa afetada pela hanseníase no estado da Bahia, Brasil

    Objective: To analyze the degree of physical disability in the elderly population affected by leprosy in Bahia State, between 2001 and 2012. Methods: The data relating to cases of leprosy was obtained from National System of Notifiable Diseases. Variables analyzed gender, age, race/color, education level, clinical and operational classification, degree of physical incapacity in diagnosis and discharge. Epidemiological indicators related to physical incapacity were calculated. Results: The leprosy features high magnitude in the elderly population, with a coefficient of detection of new cases higher than the general population, situated at a hyperendemic level. As to the epidemiological profile of leprosy in elderly, stands out: men, age 60 to 69 years, white race, low education level, dimorphic clinical manifestation and multibacillary operational classification. 36.25% of diagnosed cases had a physical incapacity at the time of diagnosis, with emphasis on the masculine gender. Conclusion: The high proportion of individuals with physical incapacity at the time of diagnosis suggests late diagnosis and hidden prevalence of the disease, mostly in Individuals of the male gender.Objetivo: Analisar o grau de incapacidade física na população idosa afetada pela hanseníase no estado da Bahia, entre 2001 e 2012. Métodos: Os dados referentes aos casos de hanseníase foram obtidos do Sistema Nacional de Agravos de Notificação. Variáveis analisadas: sexo, faixa etária, raça/cor, escolaridade, classificação clínica e operacional, grau de incapacidade física no diagnóstico e na alta. Foram calculados indicadores epidemiológicos relacionados à incapacidade física. Resultados: A hanseníase apresenta elevada magnitude na população idosa, com coeficiente de detecção de casos novos superior ao da população geral, situando-se em nível hiperendêmico. Quanto ao perfil epidemiológico da hanseníase em idosos, destaca-se: homens, faixa etária 60 a 69 anos, raça branca, baixa escolaridade, forma clínica dimorfa e classificação operacional multibacilar. 36,25% dos casos diagnosticados apresentavam incapacidade física no momento do diagnóstico, com destaque para o gênero masculino. Conclusão: A elevada proporção de indivíduos com incapacidades físicas no momento do diagnóstico sugere diagnóstico tardio e prevalência oculta da doença, sobretudo em indivíduos do gênero masculino

    Vigilância do câncer em Mato Grosso: aspectos metodológicos e operacionais de um projeto de extensão/pesquisa

    Objective: To describe the methodological and operational aspects of the Cancer Surveillance Project and its associated factors: population-based and hospital-based registry (VIGICAN), in Mato Grosso (MT). Methods: VIGICAN was divided into two projects: an extension one, which updated the data from the Population-Based Cancer Registry (RCBP) of MT in the period 2008 to 2016; and one of research, which collected primary data, through individual interviews and analysis of medical records of people with a diagnosis of cancer, aged 18 years or over, treated at reference hospitals for oncology. To analyze the factors associated with cancer, the following variables were collected: socioeconomic and demographic, social support, status and health behavior, and environmental exposure. Results: In the períod from 2008 to 2016, approximately one hundred thousand cases of cancer (incident and prevalent) were reported in the RCBP Cuiabá and Interior. After validation procedures, fifty thousand incident cases were chosen. The survey interviewed 1,012 patients, 38.2% living in the municipalities of Cuiabá and Várzea Grande, 60.4% in the interior of the state and 1.4% in other states. Preliminary data revealed that the majority were female (55.0%) and younger than 60 years (54.3%). Among those interviewed, 7.2% reported smoking tobacco, 15.5% consumed alcoholic beverages (15.5%) and 32.7% lived close to crops. Conclusion: The development of these projects allowed the integration of education with health services and will enable the recognition of specificities and different exposure scenarios and factors associated with cancer in the Mato Grosso territory.Objetivo: Descrever os aspectos metodológicos e operacionais do Projeto Vigilância do Câncer e seus fatores associados: registro de base populacional e hospitalar (VIGICAN), em Mato Grosso (MT). Métodos: O VIGICAN se desdobrou em dois projetos: um de extensão, que atualizou os dados dos Registros de Câncer de Base Populacional (RCBP) de MT no período de 2008 a 2016; e um de pesquisa, que coletou dados primários, por meio de entrevistas individuais e análise de prontuários de pessoas com diagnóstico de câncer, com 18 anos ou mais, atendidas em hospitais de referência para oncologia. Para analisar os fatores associados ao câncer, foram coletadas as seguintes variáveis: socioeconômicas e demográficas, suporte social, situação e comportamentos de saúde e exposição ambiental. Resultados: No período de 2008 a 2016, foram notificados nos RCBP Cuiabá e Interior, aproximadamente, 100 mil casos de câncer (incidentes e prevalentes). Após procedimentos de validação, foram eleitos 50 mil casos incidentes. A pesquisa entrevistou 1.012 pacientes, sendo 38,2% residentes nos municípios de Cuiabá e Várzea Grande, 60,4% no interior do estado e 1,4% em outros estados. Os dados preliminares revelaram que a maioria era do sexo feminino (55,0%) e tinha menos de 60 anos (54,3%). Entre os entrevistados, 7,2% relataram fumar tabaco, 15,5% consumiam bebidas alcoólicas (15,5%) e 32,7% moravam próximos a lavouras. Conclusão: O desenvolvimento desses projetos permitiu a integração do ensino com os serviços de saúde e possibilitará o reconhecimento das especificidades e diferentes cenários de exposição e fatores associados ao câncer do território mato-grossense

    Azimuthal anisotropy of charged jet production in root s(NN)=2.76 TeV Pb-Pb collisions

    We present measurements of the azimuthal dependence of charged jet production in central and semi-central root s(NN) = 2.76 TeV Pb-Pb collisions with respect to the second harmonic event plane, quantified as nu(ch)(2) (jet). Jet finding is performed employing the anti-k(T) algorithm with a resolution parameter R = 0.2 using charged tracks from the ALICE tracking system. The contribution of the azimuthal anisotropy of the underlying event is taken into account event-by-event. The remaining (statistical) region-to-region fluctuations are removed on an ensemble basis by unfolding the jet spectra for different event plane orientations independently. Significant non-zero nu(ch)(2) (jet) is observed in semi-central collisions (30-50% centrality) for 20 <p(T)(ch) (jet) <90 GeV/c. The azimuthal dependence of the charged jet production is similar to the dependence observed for jets comprising both charged and neutral fragments, and compatible with measurements of the nu(2) of single charged particles at high p(T). Good agreement between the data and predictions from JEWEL, an event generator simulating parton shower evolution in the presence of a dense QCD medium, is found in semi-central collisions.
