We present the results of a search for the spin-singlet P-wave state hc(1 1P1) of charmonium formed through proton-antiproton annihilation at Fermilab experiment E835. The decay channels whjich were studied were ppbar -> J/psi + X -> e^+e^- + X, ppbar -> J/psi + pi0 -> e^+e^- + 2gamma, ppbar -> J/psi + pi0pi0 -> e^+e^- + 4gamma, and the neutral channel ppbar -> eta_c gamma -> (2gamma) gamma. The decay ppbar -> J/psi gamma -> e^+e^- gamma, into which 1P1 decay is forbidden by C-parity conservation, was also examined for comparison The 90% confidence upper limits for the decay channels studied in the mass range 3525.1-3527.3 MeV for a 1P1 resonance with a presumed width of 1.0 MeV were determined to be B(ppbar->1P1)xB(1P1->J/psi+X) <= 1.8x10^-7, B(ppbar->1P1)xB(1P1->J/psi+pi0) <= 1.2x10^-7, and B(ppbar->1P1)xB(1P1->J/psi+gamma) <= 1.0x10^-7. No evidence for a 1P1 enhancement was observed in either of the two additional reactions studied.Comment: 200+ pages, Northwestern University Ph. D. Thesi

    Get PDF
We present the first measurement of the Michel parameters ¯η and ΟÎș in the radiative leptonic decay of the τ lepton using 703 fb−1 of data collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB e +e − collider. The Michel parameters are measured by an unbinned maximum likelihood fit to the kinematic information of e +e − → τ +τ − → (π +π 0ÎœÂŻ)(l âˆ’ÎœÎœÎłÂŻ ) (l = e or ”). The preliminary values of the measured Michel parameters are ¯η = −2.0 ± 1.5 ± 0.8 and ΟÎș = 0.6 ± 0.4 ± 0.2, where the first error is statistical and the second is systematic

Plasma matrix metalloproteinases in neonates having surgery for congenital heart disease

    Get PDF
During cardiopulmonary-bypass matrix-metalloproteinases released may contribute to ventricular dysfunction. This study was to determine plasma matrix-metalloproteinases in neonates after cardiopulmonary-bypass and their relation to post-operative course. A prospective observational study included 18 neonates having cardiac surgery. Plasma matrix-metalloproteinases-2 and 9 activities were measured by gelatin-zymography pre-operatively, on starting cardiopulmonarybypass, 7–8 min after aortic cross-clamp release, and 1h, 4h, 24h, and 3d after cardiopulmonary-bypass. Plasma concentrations of their tissue inhibitors 1 and 2 were determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Cardiac function was assessed by serial echocardiography. Paired t-tests and Wilcoxon tests were used to assess temporal changes, and linear correlation with simultaneous clinical and cardiac function parameters were assessed using Pearson's product-moment correlation coefficient. Plasma matrix-metalloproteinases activities and their tissue inhibitor concentrations decreased during cardiopulmonary-bypass. Matrix-metalloproteinase-2 plasma activity increased progressively starting 1h after cardiopulmonarybypass and returned to pre-operative levels at 24h. Matrix-metalloproteinase-9 plasma activity increased significantly after release of aortic cross-clamp, peaked 7–8min later, and returned to baseline at 24h. Plasma tissueinhibitor 1 and 2 concentrations increased 1h after cardiopulmonary-bypass. Cardiac function improved from 4h to 3d after surgery (p<0.05). There was no evidence of significant correlations between matrix-metalloproteinases or their inhibitors and cardiac function, inotrope scores, organ dysfunction scores, ventilation days, or hospital days. The temporal profile of plasma matrix-metalloproteinases and their inhibitors after cardiopulmonary-bypass in neonates are similar to adults. In neonates, further study should determine whether circulating matrix-metalloproteinases are useful biomarkers of disease activity locally within the myocardium, and hence of clinical outcomes

    Measurement of χ c1 and χ c2 production with s√ = 7 TeV pp collisions at ATLAS

    Get PDF
The prompt and non-prompt production cross-sections for the χ c1 and χ c2 charmonium states are measured in pp collisions at s√ = 7 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the LHC using 4.5 fb−1 of integrated luminosity. The χ c states are reconstructed through the radiative decay χ c → J/ÏˆÎł (with J/ψ → ÎŒ + ÎŒ −) where photons are reconstructed from Îł → e + e − conversions. The production rate of the χ c2 state relative to the χ c1 state is measured for prompt and non-prompt χ c as a function of J/ψ transverse momentum. The prompt χ c cross-sections are combined with existing measurements of prompt J/ψ production to derive the fraction of prompt J/ψ produced in feed-down from χ c decays. The fractions of χ c1 and χ c2 produced in b-hadron decays are also measured

Search for dark matter in events with heavy quarks and missing transverse momentum in pp collisions with the ATLAS detector

    Get PDF
This article reports on a search for dark matterpair production in association with bottom or top quarks in20.3fb−1ofppcollisions collected at√s=8TeVbytheATLAS detector at the LHC. Events with large missing trans-verse momentum are selected when produced in associationwith high-momentum jets of which one or more are identifiedas jets containingb-quarks. Final states with top quarks areselected by requiring a high jet multiplicity and in some casesa single lepton. The data are found to be consistent with theStandard Model expectations and limits are set on the massscale of effective field theories that describe scalar and tensorinteractions between dark matter and Standard Model par-ticles. Limits on the dark-matter–nucleon cross-section forspin-independent and spin-dependent interactions are alsoprovided. These limits are particularly strong for low-massdark matter. Using a simplified model, constraints are set onthe mass of dark matter and of a coloured mediator suitableto explain a possible signal of annihilating dark matter

Search for a CP-odd Higgs boson decaying to Zh in pp collisions at √s=8TeV with the ATLAS detector

    Get PDF
A search for a heavy, CP-odd Higgs boson, A, decaying into a Zboson and a 125GeV Higgs boson, h, with the ATLAS detector at the LHC is presented. The search uses proton–proton collision data at a centre-of-mass energy of 8TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 20.3fb−1. Decays of CP-even hbosons to ττor bbpairs with the Zboson decaying to electron or muon pairs are considered, as well as h →bbdecays with the Zboson decaying to neutrinos. No evidence for the production of an Aboson in these channels is found and the 95% confidence level upper limits derived for σ(gg→A) ×BR(A →Zh) ×BR(h →fÂŻf)are 0.098–0.013pb for f=τand 0.57–0.014pb for f=bin a range of mA=220–1000GeV. The results are combined and interpreted in the context of two-Higgs-doublet models. Published by Elsevier B.V. This is an open access article under the CC BY license (http://creativecommons

Observation of top-quark pair production in association with a photon and measurement of the ttγ production cross section in pp collisions at √s = 7 TeV using the ATLAS detector

    Get PDF
A search is performed for top-quark pairs (tt) produced together with a photon (Îł) with transverse energy greater than 20 GeV using a sample of tt candidate events in final states with jets, missing transverse momentum, and one isolated electron or muon. The data set used corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 4.59 fb −1 of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV recorded by the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. In total, 140 and 222 ttÎł candidate events are observed in the electron and muon channels, to be compared to the expectation of 79 +/- 26 and 120 +/- 39 non-ttÎł background events, respectively. The production of ttÎł events is observed with a significance of 5.3 standard deviations away from the null hypothesis. The ttÎł production cross section times the branching ratio (BR) of the single-lepton decay channel is measured in a fiducial kinematic region within the ATLAS acceptance. The measured value is σ (fid/tty) × BR = 63 +/- 8(stat) (+17/-13)(syst) +/- 1 lumi fb per lepton flavor, in good agreement with the leading-order theoretical calculation normalized to the next-to-leading-order theoretical prediction of 48 +/- 10 fb
