    Paramagnetic-diamagnetic interplay in quantum dots for non-zero temperatures

    In the usual Fock-and Darwin-formalism with parabolic potential characterized by the confining energy \eps_o := \hbar\omega_o= 3.37 meV, but including explicitly also the Zeeman coupling between spin and magnetic field, we study the combined orbital and spin magnetic properties of quantum dots in a two-dimensional electron gas with parameters for GaAs, for N =1 and N >> 1 electrons on the dot. For N=1 the magnetization M(T,B) consists of a paramagnetic spin contribution and a diamagnetic orbital contribution, which dominate in a non-trivial way at low temperature and fields rsp. high temperature and fields. For N >> 1, where orbital and spin effects are intrinsically coupled in a subtle way and cannot be separated, we find in a simplified Hartree approximation that at N=m^2, i.e. at a half-filled last shell, M(T,B,N) is parallel (antiparallel) to the magnetic field, if temperatures and fields are low enough (high enough), whereas for N\ne m^2 the magnetization oscillates with B and N as a T-dependent periodic function of the variable x:=\sqrt{N}eB/(2m^*c\omega_o), with T-independent period \Delta x =1 (where m^* := 0.067 m_o is the small effective mass of GaAs, while m_o is the electron mass). Correspondingly, by an adiabatic demagnetization process, which should only be fast enough with respect to the slow transient time of the magnetic properties of the dot, the temperature of the dot diminishes rsp. increases with decreasing magnetic field, and in some cases we obtain quite pronounced effects.Comment: LaTeX, 28 pages; including three .eps-figures; final version accepted by J.     Treatment of poorly-pigmented tumors of small sizes can be carried out using photodynamic therapy (PDT). The material for the analysis was data on 112 patients. We used data from the Belarusian Cancer Registry, medical records of patients with clinically diagnosed choroid melanoma (C69.3 according to ICD-10) for the period 2013–2021. The size and level of blood flow in the tumors were assessed using an ultrasound machine with a doppler attachment. PDT was carried out using a «UPL PDT» semiconductor laser (Lemt, Republic of Belarus, λ=661 nm) with a light spot diameter of 1 to 3 mm for 60 s per field with a light dose of 50 J/cm2. The entire surface of the tumor was exposed to the action, with the fields “tiled”, from the periphery to the top of the tumor, with overlapping fields. Tumor pigmentation was assessed visually. To evaluate the treatment outcome, the general group of patients was divided into three subgroups according to thickness and basal diameter. Group I – 40 (35.7%) patients, with an average tumor thickness of 1.4±0.2 mm, basal diameter – 5.8±1.5 mm. II – 51 (45.5%) patients, with an average tumor thickness of 2.3 ± 0.3 mm, basal diameter – 7.9 ± 1.5 mm. III – 21 (18.8%) patients. The mean value of the tumor thickness was 3.8±0.4 mm, the basal diameter was 9.8±1.4 mm. After PDT in the general group (n=112), 29 (25.9%) patients had complete tumor resorption, and 83 (74.1%) patients had stabilization. The eyeball was saved in 107 (95.5%) patients. Continued growth and relapse were recorded in 34 patients: 25 (22.3%) and 9 (8.0%), respectively. In 29 (85.3%) patients, the eyeball was preserved after treatment of relapse and continued growth. 5 (4.5%) enucleations were performed. Оценку размеров и уровня кровотока в опухолях осуществляли с использованием УЗИ аппарата с приставкой допплер. ФДТ проводили с использованием полупроводникового лазера «УПЛ ФДТ» (Lemt, Республика Беларусь, λ=661 нм) с диаметром светового пятна от 1 до 3 мм в течение 60 с на одно поле со световой дозой 50 Дж/см2. Воздействию подвергали всю поверхность опухоли, располагая поля «черепицеобразно», от периферии к вершине опухоли, с перекрытием полей. Пигментацию опухоли оценивали визуально. Для оценки результата лечения общая группа пациентов была разделена на три подгруппы по толщине и базальному диаметру опухоли. I группа – 40 (35,7%) пациентов со средним значением толщины опухоли 1,4±0,2 мм и базальным диаметром 5,8±1,5 мм. II – 51 (45,5%) пациент со средним значением толщины опухоли 2,3±0,3 мм и базальным диаметром 7,9±1,5 мм. III группа – 21 (18,8%) пациент со средним значением толщины опухоли 3,8±0,4 мм и базальным диаметром 9,8±1,4 мм. После ФДТ в общей группе (n=112) у 29 (25,9%) зарегистрирована полная резорбция опухоли, у 83 (74,1%) стабилизация. Сохранить глазное яблоко удалось у 107 (95,5%) пациентов. Продолженный рост и рецидив регистрировался у 34 пациентов: 25 (22,3%) и 9 (8,0%), соответственно. У 29 (85,3%) пациентов сохранено глазное яблоко после лечения рецидива и продолженного роста. Произведено 5 (4,5%) энуклеаций Скорректированная одногодичная кумулятивная (СКВ) выживаемость составила 100%, 3-летняя и 5-летняя – 95,8±2,4%, 93,7±3,1%, соответственно

    Structure Functions of the Nucleon and their Interpretation

    The current status of measurements of the nucleon structure functions and their understanding is reviewed. The fixed target experiments E665, CCFR and NMC and the HERA experiments H1 and ZEUS are discussed in some detail. The extraction of parton momentum distribution functions from global fits is described, with particular attention paid to much improved information on the gluon momentum distribution. The status of alpha_s measurements from deep inelastic data is reviewed. Models and non-perturbative approaches for the parton input distributions are outlined. The impact on the phenomenology of QCD of the data at very low values of the Bjorken x variable is discussed in detail. Recent advances in the understanding of the transition from deep inelastic scattering to photoproduction are summarised.     Measurement of Leading Proton and Neutron Production in Deep Inelastic Scattering at HERA

    Deep--inelastic scattering events with a leading baryon have been detected by the H1 experiment at HERA using a forward proton spectrometer and a forward neutron calorimeter. Semi--inclusive cross sections have been measured in the kinematic region 2 <= Q^2 <= 50 GeV^2, 6.10^-5 <= x <= 6.10^-3 and baryon p_T <= MeV, for events with a final state proton with energy 580 <= E' <= 740 GeV, or a neutron with energy E' >= 160 GeV. The measurements are used to test production models and factorization hypotheses. A Regge model of leading baryon production which consists of pion, pomeron and secondary reggeon exchanges gives an acceptable description of both semi-inclusive cross sections in the region 0.7 <= E'/E_p <= 0.9, where E_p is the proton beam energy.     Search for squarks and gluinos in events with isolated leptons, jets and missing transverse momentum at s√=8 TeV with the ATLAS detector

    The results of a search for supersymmetry in final states containing at least one isolated lepton (electron or muon), jets and large missing transverse momentum with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider are reported. The search is based on proton-proton collision data at a centre-of-mass energy s√=8 TeV collected in 2012, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 20 fb−1. No significant excess above the Standard Model expectation is observed. Limits are set on supersymmetric particle masses for various supersymmetric models. Depending on the model, the search excludes gluino masses up to 1.32 TeV and squark masses up to 840 GeV. Limits are also set on the parameters of a minimal universal extra dimension model, excluding a compactification radius of 1/R c = 950 GeV for a cut-off scale times radius (ΛR c) of approximately 30

    Measurement of the production of a W boson in association with a charm quark in pp collisions at √s = 7 TeV with the ATLAS detector

    The production of a W boson in association with a single charm quark is studied using 4.6 fb−1 of pp collision data at s√ = 7 TeV collected with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. In events in which a W boson decays to an electron or muon, the charm quark is tagged either by its semileptonic decay to a muon or by the presence of a charmed meson. The integrated and differential cross sections as a function of the pseudorapidity of the lepton from the W-boson decay are measured. Results are compared to the predictions of next-to-leading-order QCD calculations obtained from various parton distribution function parameterisations. The ratio of the strange-to-down sea-quark distributions is determined to be 0.96+0.26−0.30 at Q 2 = 1.9 GeV2, which supports the hypothesis of an SU(3)-symmetric composition of the light-quark sea. Additionally, the cross-section ratio σ(W + +c¯¯)/σ(W − + c) is compared to the predictions obtained using parton distribution function parameterisations with different assumptions about the s−s¯¯¯ quark asymmetry

    Single hadron response measurement and calorimeter jet energy scale uncertainty with the ATLAS detector at the LHC

    The uncertainty on the calorimeter energy response to jets of particles is derived for the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). First, the calorimeter response to single isolated charged hadrons is measured and compared to the Monte Carlo simulation using proton-proton collisions at centre-of-mass energies of sqrt(s) = 900 GeV and 7 TeV collected during 2009 and 2010. Then, using the decay of K_s and Lambda particles, the calorimeter response to specific types of particles (positively and negatively charged pions, protons, and anti-protons) is measured and compared to the Monte Carlo predictions. Finally, the jet energy scale uncertainty is determined by propagating the response uncertainty for single charged and neutral particles to jets.     Measurement of χ c1 and χ c2 production with s√ = 7 TeV pp collisions at ATLAS

    The prompt and non-prompt production cross-sections for the χ c1 and χ c2 charmonium states are measured in pp collisions at s√ = 7 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the LHC using 4.5 fb−1 of integrated luminosity. The χ c states are reconstructed through the radiative decay χ c → J/ψγ (with J/ψ → μ + μ −) where photons are reconstructed from γ → e + e − conversions. The production rate of the χ c2 state relative to the χ c1 state is measured for prompt and non-prompt χ c as a function of J/ψ transverse momentum. The prompt χ c cross-sections are combined with existing measurements of prompt J/ψ production to derive the fraction of prompt J/ψ produced in feed-down from χ c decays. The fractions of χ c1 and χ c2 produced in b-hadron decays are also measured

    Search for squarks and gluinos with the ATLAS detector in final states with jets and missing transverse momentum using √s=8 TeV proton-proton collision data

    A search for squarks and gluinos in final states containing high-p T jets, missing transverse momentum and no electrons or muons is presented. The data were recorded in 2012 by the ATLAS experiment in s√=8 TeV proton-proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider, with a total integrated luminosity of 20.3 fb−1. Results are interpreted in a variety of simplified and specific supersymmetry-breaking models assuming that R-parity is conserved and that the lightest neutralino is the lightest supersymmetric particle. An exclusion limit at the 95% confidence level on the mass of the gluino is set at 1330 GeV for a simplified model incorporating only a gluino and the lightest neutralino. For a simplified model involving the strong production of first- and second-generation squarks, squark masses below 850 GeV (440 GeV) are excluded for a massless lightest neutralino, assuming mass degenerate (single light-flavour) squarks. In mSUGRA/CMSSM models with tan β = 30, A 0 = −2m 0 and μ > 0, squarks and gluinos of equal mass are excluded for masses below 1700 GeV. Additional limits are set for non-universal Higgs mass models with gaugino mediation and for simplified models involving the pair production of gluinos, each decaying to a top squark and a top quark, with the top squark decaying to a charm quark and a neutralino. These limits extend the region of supersymmetric parameter space excluded by previous searches with the ATLAS detector
