    1. No doubt about being upper levels in education a prioritarian way for the universalization of knowledge, as the authors more than once argued (see their Presentation at the previous Conference on Education 2012) 2. Considering the building up of a multicultural frame in education, in today’s world, an unavoidable way and a shared aim across different countries, they synthetically delineate the possible contribution by the university. 3. Discussing the actual state of an inter-university cooperation Sapienza University of Rome/Moscow State University for Psychology and Education (MGPPU), they will comment upon the need for major economical involvement by Ministries of education and instruction, toward the organizing of joint Magister Curricula 4. In fact, is a more extended joint engagement by representatives of different cultures and ethnical communities required for this generalized new form of upper education, bringing about using major economic resources 5. Reference is made to a seminal way for rendering the historical cultural perspective in social science the main mediation, in building up a new “historical cultural” and “social” education, exposed by Rubzov, Margolis and Guruzhapov

With reference to the Presentation of the colleague Lucisano of the Sapienza University, the author stresses the still great meaning of the KIP by Vygotskij for a correct understanding of today's needs for education and instruction in Europe. Expecially the further analysis and deepening of KIP by Davydov predisposes a full understanding of the learning activity as a way not for competing, but for attaining a general growth of the entire human personality. The project for a new Programme on "Historical cultural psychology and Activity Theory Approach in Instruction", existing in Moscow at the Psycho-pedagogical University and cared for by a team of Vygotskian followers engaged in the realizing of it, demonstrates the strong potential connection between the KIP theory and the social needs of present-day society. Moreover, a new historical-cultural school was projected and will be opened in Russia

    1. Referring to some of the leading publications on the so called "difficult problem" of human neurosciences (consciousness), this definition is compared with the conceptualization of consciousness proposed by Vygotskij and shared by the representatives of the Historical-cultural trend in psychology. 2. The socio-genetic conception seems, at the present-day state of the research, to give a better explanation of the "becoming a person", whether normal or handicapped, since the higher mental processes develop according to culture and education. 3. It is argued that the foundation of this process derives from a learning dynamic which, not being successfully experienced and supported by research-activity in educational contexts, brings about a more or less meaningful disease. 4. Brief considerations about "personality" – a subject mastering all his/her higher psychic functions. 5. As a conclusion, every intervention, whether educational, re-educational or clinical, has to devote major attention to the carrying on research-activity in the school-learning' as an effective way for attaining inclusion. Distiller grains (DG), which are the by-product from the bioethanol industry, represent an interesting alternative as animal feedstock. To our knowledge, little information is available on the inclusion of DG on the quality of meat from pasture-fed heifers. Thus, the aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of DG inclusion in pasture-based systems on the main meat quality attributes of Charolais x Aberdeen Angus heifers. For this purpose, meat from heifers fed with a pasture-based diet without supplementation (P) or with 0.75% of live weight DG supplementation (PDG; DG plus dry-rolled corn, 50:50) or with 0.75% of live weight dry-rolled corn supplementation (PRC) was evaluated. Physical (pH, WHC, color, texture), sensory and nutritional (fat content, fatty acid, and amino acid profile) attributes were evaluated in beef samples. No effect of supplementation was observed on meat pH or color (p > 0.05). Meat from PDG heifers showed higher values of WBSF than meat from P heifers (p = 0.039). However, the overall tenderness evaluated by trained panelists showed no differences due to supplementation (p > 0.05). Our results indicate that the inclusion of DG as a partial corn-replacement supplementation for heifers under grazing represents a strategic tool not only related to meat quality, but also as an alternative to reduce food–feed competition.Instituto de Investigación Tecnología de Alimentos (ITA)Fil: Merayo, Manuela. Akt Is S-Palmitoylated: A New Layer of Regulation for Akt

    Get PDF
The protein kinase Akt/PKB participates in a great variety of processes, including translation, cell proliferation and survival, as well as malignant transformation and viral infection. In the last few years, novel Akt posttranslational modifications have been found. However, how these modification patterns affect Akt subcellular localization, target specificity and, in general, function is not thoroughly understood. Here, we postulate and experimentally demonstrate by acyl-biotin exchange (ABE) assay and (3)H-palmitate metabolic labeling that Akt is S-palmitoylated, a modification related to protein sorting throughout subcellular membranes. Mutating cysteine 344 into serine blocked Akt S-palmitoylation and diminished its phosphorylation at two key sites, T308 and T450. Particularly, we show that palmitoylation-deficient Akt increases its recruitment to cytoplasmic structures that colocalize with lysosomes, a process stimulated during autophagy. Finally, we found that cysteine 344 in Akt1 is important for proper its function, since Akt1-C344S was unable to support adipocyte cell differentiation in vitro. These results add an unexpected new layer to the already complex Akt molecular code, improving our understanding of cell decision-making mechanisms such as cell survival, differentiation and death

What determines growth potential and juvenile quality of farmed fish species?

    Get PDF
Enhanced production of high quality and healthy fry is a key target for a successful and competitive expansion of the aquaculture industry. Although large quantities of fish larvae are produced, survival rates are often low or highly variable and growth potential is in most cases not fully exploited, indicating significant gaps in our knowledge concerning optimal nutritional and culture conditions. Understanding the mechanisms that control early development and muscle growth are critical for the identification of time windows in development that introduce growth variation, and improve the viability and quality of juveniles. This literature review of the current state of knowledge aims to provide a framework for a better understanding of fish skeletal muscle ontogeny, and its impact on larval and juvenile quality as broadly defined. It focuses on fundamental biological knowledge relevant to larval phenotype and quality and, in particular, on the factors affecting the development of skeletal muscle. It also discusses the available methodologies to assess growth and larvae/juvenile quality, identifies gaps in knowledge and suggests future research directions. The focus is primarily on the major farmed non-salmonid fish species in Europe that include gilthead sea bream, European sea bass, turbot, Atlantic cod, Senegalese sole and Atlantic halibut
