HERAFitter
HERAFitter is an open-source package that provides a framework for the determination of the parton distribution functions (PDFs) of the proton and for many different kinds of analyses in Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). It encodes results from a wide range of experimental measurements in lepton–proton deep inelastic scattering and proton–proton (proton–antiproton) collisions at hadron colliders. These are complemented with a variety of theoretical options for calculating PDF-dependent cross section predictions corresponding to the measurements. The framework covers a large number of the existing methods and schemes used for PDF determination. The data and theoretical predictions are brought together through numerous methodological options for carrying out PDF fits and plotting tools to help to visualise the results. While primarily based on the approach of collinear factorisation, HERAFitter also provides facilities for fits of dipole models and transverse-momentum dependent PDFs. The package can be used to study the impact of new precise measurements from hadron colliders. This paper describes the general structure of HERAFitter and its wide choice of options
QCD and strongly coupled gauge theories : challenges and perspectives
We highlight the progress, current status, and open challenges of QCD-driven physics, in theory and in experiment. We discuss how the strong interaction is intimately connected to a broad sweep of physical problems, in settings ranging from astrophysics and cosmology to strongly coupled, complex systems in particle and condensed-matter physics, as well as to searches for physics beyond the Standard Model. We also discuss how success in describing the strong interaction impacts other fields, and, in turn, how such subjects can impact studies of the strong interaction. In the course of the work we offer a perspective on the many research streams which flow into and out of QCD, as well as a vision for future developments.Peer reviewe

Gluons and the quark sea at high energies: distributions, polarization, tomography
This report is based on a ten-week program on "Gluons and the quark sea at
high-energies", which took place at the Institute for Nuclear Theory in Seattle
in Fall 2010. The principal aim of the program was to develop and sharpen the
science case for an Electron-Ion Collider (EIC), a facility that will be able
to collide electrons and positrons with polarized protons and with light to
heavy nuclei at high energies, offering unprecedented possibilities for
in-depth studies of quantum chromodynamics. This report is organized around
four major themes: i) the spin and flavor structure of the proton, ii)
three-dimensional structure of nucleons and nuclei in momentum and
configuration space, iii) QCD matter in nuclei, and iv) Electroweak physics and
the search for physics beyond the Standard Model. Beginning with an executive
summary, the report contains tables of key measurements, chapter overviews for
each of the major scientific themes, and detailed individual contributions on
various aspects of the scientific opportunities presented by an EIC
Probing the gluon density of the proton in the exclusive photoproduction of vector mesons at the LHC: a phenomenological analysis
Measurement and QCD analysis of double-differential inclusive jet cross sections in pp collisions at √s=8 TeV and cross section ratios to 2.76 and 7 TeV
A measurement of the double-differential inclusive jet cross section as a function
of the jet transverse momentum pT and the absolute jet rapidity |y| is presented.
Data from LHC proton-proton collisions at √
s = 8 TeV, corresponding to an integrated
luminosity of 19.7 fb−1
, have been collected with the CMS detector. Jets are reconstructed
using the anti-kT clustering algorithm with a size parameter of 0.7 in a phase space region
covering jet pT from 74 GeV up to 2.5 TeV and jet absolute rapidity up to |y| = 3.0. The
low-pT jet range between 21 and 74 GeV is also studied up to |y| = 4.7, using a dedicated
data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.6 pb−1
. The measured
jet cross section is corrected for detector effects and compared with the predictions from
perturbative QCD at next-to-leading order (NLO) using various sets of parton distribution
functions (PDF). Cross section ratios to the corresponding measurements performed at
2.76 and 7 TeV are presented. From the measured double-differential jet cross section, the
value of the strong coupling constant evaluated at the Z mass is αS(MZ) = 0.1164+0.0060
−0.0043,
where the errors include the PDF, scale, nonperturbative effects and experimental uncertainties,
using the CT10 NLO PDFs. Improved constraints on PDFs based on the inclusive
jet cross section measurement are presented
Decoupling of the leading contribution in the discrete BFKL analysis of high-precision HERA data
We analyse, in NLO, the physical properties of the discrete eigenvalue
solution for the BFKL equation. We show that a set of eigenfunctions with
positive eigenvalues, \omega, together with a small contribution from a
continuum of eigenfunctions with negative \omega, provide an excellent
description of high-precision HERA F_2 data in the region, x 6
GeV^2. The phases of the eigenfunctions can be obtained from a simple
parametrisation of the pomeron spectrum, which has a natural motivation within
BFKL. The data analysis shows that the first eigenfunction decouples completely
or almost completely from the proton. This suggests that there exist an
additional ground state, which is naturally saturated and may have the
properties of the soft pomeron.Comment: 35 pages, 16 figures, the new version gives more explanations of the
