Exploring positive adjustment in HIV positive African women living in the UK

The numbers of African women living with HIV/AIDS in the UK is growing and yet little is known about the adjustment experience for these women. This study explored aspects of positive adjustment to living with HIV/AIDS among a sample of African women living in London, UK. Transcripts of semi-structured interviews with 12 women were analysed using interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA). Two superordinate themes emerged inductively from the data: positive changes in coping (subthemes: positive interpretation of their situation and positive behavioural changes) and positive growth since the HIV diagnosis (subthemes: changes in the value of life and, changes in goals and opportunities). While these women acknowledged the negative impact of living with HIV/AIDS, all participants mentioned changes in health behaviours to help regain mastery of their lives and comparing with others better-off and worse-off was used to enhance self-esteem and view their situation positively. Light Induced Increase of Electron Diffusion Length in a p n Junction Type CH3NH3PbBr3 Perovskite Solar Cell
High band gap, high open circuit voltage solar cells with methylammonium lead tribromide MAPbBr3 perovskite absorbers are of interest for spectral splitting and photoelectrochemical applications, because of their good performance and ease of processing. The physical origin of high performance in these and similar perovskite based devices remains only partially understood. Using cross sectional electron beaminduced current EBIC measurements, we find an increase in carrier diffusion length in MAPbBr3 Cl based solar cells upon low intensity a few percent of 1 sun intensity blue laser illumination. Comparing dark and illuminated conditions, the minority carrier electron diffusion length increases about 3.5 times from Ln 100 50 nm to 360 22 nm. The EBIC cross section profile indicates a p amp; 8722;n structure between the n FTO TiO2 and p perovskite, rather than the p amp; 8722;i amp; 8722;n structure, reported for the iodide derivative. On the basis of the variation in space charge region width with varying bias, measured by EBIC and capacitance amp; 8722;voltage measurements, we estimate the net doping concentration in MAPbBr3 Cl to be 3 amp; 8722;6 1017 cm amp; 8722;
Globally Anisotropic High Porosity Silica Aerogels
We discuss two methods by which high porosity silica aerogels can be
engineered to exhibit global anisotropy. First, anisotropy can be introduced
with axial strain. In addition, intrinsic anisotropy can result during growth
and drying stages and, suitably controlled, it can be correlated with
preferential radial shrinkage in cylindrical samples. We have performed small
angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) to characterize these two types of anisotropy. We
show that global anisotropy originating from either strain or shrinkage leads
to optical birefringence and that optical cross-polarization studies are a

Cosmological Constraints from calibrated Yonetoku and Amati relation implies Fundamental plane of Gamma-ray bursts
We consider two empirical relations using data only from the prompt emission
of Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs), peak energy () - peak luminosity ()
relation (so called Yonetoku relation) and -isotropic energy () relation (so called Amati relation). We first suggest the independence
of the two relations although they have been considered similar and dependent.
From this viewpoint, we compare constraints on cosmological parameters,
and , from the Yonetoku and Amati relations
calibrated by low-redshift GRBs with . We found that they are
different in 1- level, although they are still consistent in 2-
level. This and the fact that both Amati and Yonetoku relations have systematic
errors larger than statistical errors suggest the existence of a hidden
parameter of GRBs. We introduce the luminosity time defined by as a hidden parameter to obtain a generalized Yonetoku
relation as . The new relation has much smaller systematic
error, 30%, and can be regarded as "Fundamental plane" of GRBs. We show a
possible radiation model for this new relation. Finally we apply the new
relation for high-redshift GRBs with to obtain
, which is consistent with the

Renormalization Group Flow Equation at Finite Density
For the linear sigma model with quarks we derive renormalization group flow
equations for finite temperature and finite baryon density using the heat
kernel cutoff. At zero temperature we evolve the effective potential to the
Fermi momentum and compare the solutions of the full evolution equation with
those in the mean field approximation. We find a first order phase transition
either from a massive constituent quark phase to a mixed phase, where both
massive and massless quarks are present, or from a metastable constituent quark
phase at low density to a stable massless quark phase at high density. In the
latter solution, the formation of droplets of massless quarks is realized even

Chiral symmetry breaking, color superconductivity and color neutral quark matter: a variational approach
We investigate the vacuum realignment for chiral symmetry breaking and color
superconductivity at finite density in Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model in a
variational method. The treatment allows us to investigate simultaneous
formation of condensates in quark antiquark as well as in diquark channels. The
methodology involves an explicit construction of a variational ground state and
minimisation of the thermodynamic potential. Color and electric charge
neutrality conditions are imposed through introduction of appropriate chemical
potentials. Color and flavor dependent condensate functions are determined
through minimisation of the thermodynamic potential. The equation of state is
calculated. Simultaneous existence of a mass gap and superconducting gap is
seen in a small window of quark chemical potential within the model when charge
neutrality conditions are not imposed. Enforcing color and electric charge
neutrality conditions gives rise to existence of gapless superconducting modes
depending upon the magnitude of the gap and the difference of the chemical

Influence of Heat Treatment on Defect Structures in Single-Crystalline Blade Roots Studied by X-ray Topography and Positron Annihilation Lifetime Spectroscopy
Single-crystalline superalloy CMSX-4 is studied in the as-cast state and after heat treatment, with material being taken from turbine blade castings. The effect of the heat treatment on the defect structure of the root area near the selector/root connection is emphasized. Multiscale analysis is performed to correlate results obtained by X-ray topography and positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS). Electron microscopy observations were also carried out to characterize the inhomogeneity in dendritic structure. The X-ray topography was used to compare defects of the misorientation nature, occurring in as-cast and treated states. The type and concentration of defects before and after heat treatment in different root areas were determined using the PALS method, which enables voids, mono-vacancies, and dislocations to be taken into account. In this way, differences in the concentration of defects caused by heat treatment are rationalized
A deep dive into the ecology of Gamay (Botany Bay, Australia): current knowledge and future priorities for this highly modified coastal waterway
Context: Gamay is a coastal waterway of immense social, cultural and ecological value. Since European settlement, it has become a hub for industrialisation and human modification. There is growing desire for ecosystem-level management of urban waterways, but such efforts are often challenged by a lack of integrated knowledge.
Aim and methods: We systematically reviewed published literature and traditional ecological knowledge (TEK), and consulted scientists to produce a review of Gamay that synthesises published knowledge of Gamay’s aquatic ecosystem to identify knowledge gaps and future research opportunities.
Key results: We found 577 published resources on Gamay, of which over 70% focused on ecology. Intertidal rocky shores were the most studied habitat, focusing on invertebrate communities. Few studies considered multiple habitats or taxa. Studies investigating cumulative human impacts, long-term trends and habitat connectivity are lacking, and the broader ecological role of artificial substrate as habitat in Gamay is poorly understood. TEK of Gamay remains a significant knowledge gap. Habitat restoration has shown promising results and could provide opportunities to improve affected habitats in the future.
Conclusion and implications: This review highlights the extensive amount of knowledge that exists for Gamay, but also identifies key gaps that need to be filled for effective management
Pharmacogenetics of Bleeding and Thromboembolic Events in Direct Oral Anticoagulant Users

This was a retrospective real-world study linking genotype data of three Finnish biobanks with national register data on drug dispensations and healthcare encounters. We investigated several single-nucleotide variants (SNVs) in the ABCG2, ABCB1, CES1, and CYP3A5 genes potentially associated with bleeding or thromboembolic events in direct oral anticoagulant (DOAC) users based on earlier research. We used Cox regression models to compare the incidence of clinical outcomes between carriers and noncarriers of the SNVs or haplotypes. In total, 1,806 patients on apixaban, dabigatran, or rivaroxaban were studied. The ABCB1 c.3435C>T (p.Ile1145=, rs1045642) SNV (hazard ratio (HR) 0.42, 95% confidence interval (CI), 0.18-0.98, P = 0.044) and 1236T-2677T-3435T (rs1128503-rs2032582-rs1045642) haplotype (HR 0.44, 95% CI, 0.20-0.95, P = 0.036) were associated with a reduced risk for thromboembolic outcomes, and the 1236C-2677G-3435C (HR 2.55, 95% CI, 1.03-6.36, P = 0.044) and 1236T-2677G-3435C (HR 5.88, 95% CI, 2.35-14.72, P A (rs4148738) SNV associated with a lower risk for bleeding events (HR 0.37, 95% CI, 0.16-0.89, P = 0.025) in apixaban users. ABCB1 variants are potential factors affecting thromboembolic events in rivaroxaban users and bleeding events in apixaban users. Studies with larger numbers of patients are warranted for comprehensive assessment of the pharmacogenetic associations of DOACs and their relevance for clinical practice.Peer reviewe
Search for direct production of charginos and neutralinos in events with three leptons and missing transverse momentum in √s = 7 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector
A search for the direct production of charginos and neutralinos in final states with three electrons or muons and missing transverse momentum is presented. The analysis is based on 4.7 fb−1 of proton–proton collision data delivered by the Large Hadron Collider and recorded with the ATLAS detector. Observations are consistent with Standard Model expectations in three signal regions that are either depleted or enriched in Z-boson decays. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are set in R-parity conserving phenomenological minimal supersymmetric models and in simplified models, significantly extending previous results
