De la mécanique du bonheur à la mécanique de la mort : Réflexions critiques sur quelques paradigmes du développement

Just as reflection on international development is suffering from a certain shortness of breath, so are the dynamics of technico-industrial growth becoming weaker. This study seeks to demonstrate how this double falling off originates in the weaknesses manifest in the energy reasonings of the mechanical logic which latter directs the ideology and the material basis of economic and social development. After having first summarized the classical'paradigm of mechanical growth, the study recapitulates the principal argumentation of the theoretical model of the thermodynamicists of development and of their critique of the classical paradigm. The study also stresses how both eliminate from their analyses of the process of the economic ans social development of nations that human energy of the unexpected and the contradictory that is born of the meeting of multiple historical experiences, of the impacting of the « similar » and the « different » and which produces, as the ultimate mutation, the ecumenical history of the international dynamic. The perspective brought to the area of study may be summarized therefore by this question both so simple and at the same time so complicated: how does one sustain the diversity of cultures, respect the experience of Others, live with them without reducing them to silence, without co- opting them, without thinking that all the roads of History lead toward us

Identification of regulatory variants associated with genetic susceptibility to meningococcal disease.

Non-coding genetic variants play an important role in driving susceptibility to complex diseases but their characterization remains challenging. Here, we employed a novel approach to interrogate the genetic risk of such polymorphisms in a more systematic way by targeting specific regulatory regions relevant for the phenotype studied. We applied this method to meningococcal disease susceptibility, using the DNA binding pattern of RELA - a NF-kB subunit, master regulator of the response to infection - under bacterial stimuli in nasopharyngeal epithelial cells. We designed a custom panel to cover these RELA binding sites and used it for targeted sequencing in cases and controls. Variant calling and association analysis were performed followed by validation of candidate polymorphisms by genotyping in three independent cohorts. We identified two new polymorphisms, rs4823231 and rs11913168, showing signs of association with meningococcal disease susceptibility. In addition, using our genomic data as well as publicly available resources, we found evidences for these SNPs to have potential regulatory effects on ATXN10 and LIF genes respectively. The variants and related candidate genes are relevant for infectious diseases and may have important contribution for meningococcal disease pathology. Finally, we described a novel genetic association approach that could be applied to other phenotypes

Alignment of the ALICE Inner Tracking System with cosmic-ray tracks

37 pages, 15 figures, revised version, accepted by JINSTALICE (A Large Ion Collider Experiment) is the LHC (Large Hadron Collider) experiment devoted to investigating the strongly interacting matter created in nucleus-nucleus collisions at the LHC energies. The ALICE ITS, Inner Tracking System, consists of six cylindrical layers of silicon detectors with three different technologies; in the outward direction: two layers of pixel detectors, two layers each of drift, and strip detectors. The number of parameters to be determined in the spatial alignment of the 2198 sensor modules of the ITS is about 13,000. The target alignment precision is well below 10 micron in some cases (pixels). The sources of alignment information include survey measurements, and the reconstructed tracks from cosmic rays and from proton-proton collisions. The main track-based alignment method uses the Millepede global approach. An iterative local method was developed and used as well. We present the results obtained for the ITS alignment using about 10^5 charged tracks from cosmic rays that have been collected during summer 2008, with the ALICE solenoidal magnet switched off.Peer reviewe

Lógica do desenvolvimento do estado e lógica camponesa

Este artigo tenta estabelecer que a modernização agrícola dentro dos países do terceiro mundo acarreta enormes incompreensões sabiamente alimentadas pelas elites modernizadoras. Estas últimas justificam suas políticas e projetos de desenvolvimento agrícola por uma blea retórica sobre a situação miserável da agricultura familiar e sua sobrevivência, mas na verdade suprimem-se os trabalhadores do campo reduzidos a uma categoria residual da economia nacional. O autor propões um quadro teórico que define as lógicas antagonísticas que são a base da organização dos trabalhadores do campo tradicionais e aquela da agricultura moderna. Ele mostra que a lógica tradicional da produção da segurança de vida a nível local não pode se casar com aquela da produção de um excedente mobilizável com vistas à acumulação a nível nacional. O pão cotidiano contra a grandeza da nação, aí está resumido ao máximo o dilema que oferece aos trabalhadores do campo tradicionais o jogo da modernização agrícola. Alguns exemplos são trazidos para ilustrar esta situação.This article aims at showing that agricultural modernization in Third World countries is full of misunderstandings, intellegently cultivated by the modernizing elites. These, indeed, claim to build their policies and projects on the urgent need to preserve and improve the very family agriculture which they in fact tend to jeopardize, if not destroy. The author presents a theoretical framework capable of shedding light upon the antagonistic logics opposing the organization of traditional peasantry and modern agriculture. The former´s objective of producing security at the level cannot be marched with the latter´s on of producing a surplus geared forward national accumulation. Daily bread as against nation´s greatness, such is, in a nutshell, the dilemma facing, tradicional peasantries confronted with the elites forwarding of agricultural modernity. This dilemma is illustrated with a few examples
