    Evaluation of different conditions to enhance the performances of Lactobacillus pentosus OM13 during industrial production of Spanish-style table olives

    The main objective was to set up a methodology to improve the high volume production of green table olives, cv. Nocellara del Belice. Lactobaccillus pentosus OM13 was applied during three different industrial processes of table olives as follows: trial one (IOP1) was subjected to an addition of lactic acid until a brine level of pH 7.0 was reached; trial two (IOP2) subjected to same addition of lactic acid as in trial one plus nutrient adjuvant; and trial three (IOP3) subjected to same addition of lactic acid as in trial one, but with the strain L. pentosus OM13 acclimatized in brine for 12 h before inoculation. These trials were compared against two untreated controls (spontaneously fermented and addition of L. pentosus OM13 only). Within the third day of fermentation, the pH of the brines decreased significantly, reaching pH 4.85 for trial three, pH 5.15 for trial two, and pH 5.92 for trial one. The pH of both controls decreased more slowly, and had values below pH 5.0 only after the fifteenth day of fermentation (control one) and the sixty-fifth day of fermtation (control two). Trial three reached the highest lactic acid bacteria (LAB) concentration on the third day of fermentation. After six days of fermentation, all trials showed similar values of LAB counts that were significantly higher compared to control number one. The result from genotypic identification showed that L. pentosus OM13 was the most frequently isolated in the inoculated trials. Lactobacillus plantarum, Lactobacillus coryniformis and Pediococcus pentosaceous were also detected at very low concentrations. Homoguaiacol, 2-butanol, 4-ethylphenol, phenylethyl alcohol and 4-ethylphenol were the volatile organic compounds detected at the highest levels in all experimental trials. Trial three showed a higher concentration of squalene that was not detected in other trials. The highest sensory scores of green olive aroma and overall satisfaction were found for all experimental olives, especially for those of trial one and trial two, that differed significantly from the untreated controls. This study provides evidence that the addition of lactic acid, nutrient adjuvants and, most importantly, the acclimatization of LAB cells significantly shortens the acidification process of olive brine, and improves safety and sensory quality. Shorter acidification processes result in a more rapid transformation of table olives, with reduced commodity loss and lower costs of production compared to conventional manufacturing protocols

    Daily risk of adverse outcomes in patients undergoing complex lesions revascularization: a subgroup analysis from the RAIN-CARDIOGROUP VII study (veRy thin stents for patients with left mAIn or bifurcatioN in real life)

    Introduction: Percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) for complex lesions, including unprotected left main (ULM) and bifurcations, is gaining a relevant role in treating coronary artery disease with good outcomes, also thanks to new generation stents. The daily risk of adverse cardiovascular events and their temporal distribution after these procedures is not known.Methods: All consecutive patients presenting with a critical lesion of ULM or bifurcation treated with very thin struts stents, enrolled in the RAIN-Cardiogroup VII study, were analyzed. The daily risk of major acute cardiovascular events (MACE), target lesion revascularization (TLR) and stent thrombosis (ST) and their temporal distribution in the first year of follow-up was the primary endpoint. Differences among subgroups (ULM, patient presentation, kind of stent polymer) were the secondary endpoint.Results: 2745 patients were included, mean age 68 ± 11 years, 33.3% diabetics, 54.5% had an acute coronary syndrome (ACS); 88.5% of treated lesions were bifurcations, 27.2% ULM. Average daily risk was 0.022% for MACE, 0.005% for TLR and 0.004% for ST, in the first year. Bimodal distribution of adverse events, especially TLR, with an early peak in the first 50 days and a late one after 150 days, was observed. Patients with ULM presented a significantly higher daily risk of events, and ACS patients presented higher MACE risk. No difference emerged according to the type of stent polymer.Conclusions: The daily risk of adverse events in the first year after complex PCI in our study is acceptably low. PCI on ULM carries a higher risk of complications

    Incidence of adverse events at 3 months versus at 12 months after dual antiplatelet therapy cessation in patients treated with thin stents with unprotected left main or coronary bifurcations

    Incidence and predictors of adverse events after dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT) cessation in patients treated with thin stents (<100 microns) in unprotected left main (ULM) or coronary bifurcation remain undefined. All consecutive patients presenting with a critical lesion of an ULM or involving a main coronary bifurcation who were treated with very thin strut stents were included. MACE (a composite end point of cardiovascular death, myocardial infarction [MI], target lesion revascularization [TLR], and stent thrombosis [ST]) was the primary endpoint, whereas target vessel revascularization (TVR) was the secondary endpoint, with particular attention to type and occurrence of ST and occurrence of ST, CV death, and MI during DAPT or after DAPT discontinuation. All analyses were performed according to length of DAPT dividing the patients in 3 groups: Short DAPT (3-months), intermediate DAPT (3 to 12 months), and long DAPT (12-months). A total of 117 patients were discharged with an indication for DAPT ≀3 months (median 1: 1 to 2.5), 200 for DAPT between 3 and 12 months (median 8: 7 to 10), and 1,958 with 12 months DAPT. After 12.8 months (8 to 20), MACE was significantly higher in the 3-month group compared with 3 to 12 and 12-month groups (9.4% vs 4.0% vs 7.2%, p ≀0.001), mainly driven by MI (4.4% vs 1.5% vs 3%, p ≀0.001) and overall ST (4.3% vs 1.5% vs 1.8%, p ≀0.001). Independent predictors of MACE were low GFR and a 2 stent strategy. Independent predictors of ST were DAPT duration <3 months and the use of a 2-stent strategy. In conclusion, even stents with very thin strut when implanted in real-life ULM or coronary bifurcation patients discharged with short DAPT have a relevant risk of ST, which remains high although not significant after DAPT cessation

    Measurement of the top quark-pair production cross section with ATLAS in pp collisions at \sqrt{s}=7\TeV

    A measurement of the production cross-section for top quark pairs(\ttbar) in pppp collisions at \sqrt{s}=7 \TeV is presented using data recorded with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Events are selected in two different topologies: single lepton (electron ee or muon Ό\mu) with large missing transverse energy and at least four jets, and dilepton (eeee, ΌΌ\mu\mu or eΌe\mu) with large missing transverse energy and at least two jets. In a data sample of 2.9 pb-1, 37 candidate events are observed in the single-lepton topology and 9 events in the dilepton topology. The corresponding expected backgrounds from non-\ttbar Standard Model processes are estimated using data-driven methods and determined to be 12.2±3.912.2 \pm 3.9 events and 2.5±0.62.5 \pm 0.6 events, respectively. The kinematic properties of the selected events are consistent with SM \ttbar production. The inclusive top quark pair production cross-section is measured to be \sigmattbar=145 \pm 31 ^{+42}_{-27} pb where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic.     Measurements of Higgs boson production and couplings in diboson final states with the ATLAS detector at the LHC

    Measurements are presented of production properties and couplings of the recently discovered Higgs boson using the decays into boson pairs, H →γ Îł, H → Z Z∗ →4l and H →W W∗ →lÎœlÎœ. The results are based on the complete pp collision data sample recorded by the ATLAS experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider at centre-of-mass energies of √s = 7 TeV and √s = 8 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of about 25 fb−1. Evidence for Higgs boson production through vector-boson fusion is reported. Results of combined ïŹts probing Higgs boson couplings to fermions and bosons, as well as anomalous contributions to loop-induced production and decay modes, are presented. All measurements are consistent with expectations for the Standard Model Higgs boson

    Measurement of the top quark pair cross section with ATLAS in pp collisions at √s=7 TeV using final states with an electron or a muon and a hadronically decaying τ lepton

    A measurement of the cross section of top quark pair production in proton-proton collisions recorded with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV is reported. The data sample used corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 2.05 fb -1. Events with an isolated electron or muon and a τ lepton decaying hadronically are used. In addition, a large missing transverse momentum and two or more energetic jets are required. At least one of the jets must be identified as originating from a b quark. The measured cross section, σtt-=186±13(stat.)±20(syst.)±7(lumi.) pb, is in good agreement with the Standard Model prediction
