Amnesic Patients Show Superior Generalization in Category Learning
OBJECTIVE: Generalization is the application of existing knowledge to novel situations. Questions remain about the precise role of the hippocampus in this facet of learning, but a connectionist model by Gluck and Myers (1993) predicts that generalization should be enhanced following hippocampal damage. METHOD: In a two-category learning task, a group of amnesic patients (n=9) learned the training items to a similar level of accuracy as matched controls (n=9). Both groups then classified new items at various levels of distortion. RESULTS: The amnesic group showed significantly more accurate generalization to high-distortion novel items, a difference also present when compared to a larger group of unmatched controls (n=33). CONCLUSIONS: The model prediction of a broadening of generalization gradients in amnesia, at least for items near category boundaries, was supported by the results. Our study shows for the first time that amnesia can sometimes improve generalization
Cardy and Kerr
The Kerr/CFT correspondence employs the Cardy formula to compute the entropy
of the left moving CFT states. This computation, which correctly reproduces the
Bekenstein--Hawking entropy of the four-dimensional extremal Kerr black hole,
is performed in a regime where the temperature is of order unity rather than in
a high-temperature regime. We show that the comparison of the entropy of the
extreme Kerr black hole and the entropy in the CFT can be understood within the

Reasoning with global assumptions in arithmetic modal logics
We establish a generic upper bound ExpTime for reasoning with global assumptions in coalgebraic modal logics. Unlike earlier results of this kind, we do not require a tractable set of tableau rules for the in- stance logics, so that the result applies to wider classes of logics. Examples are Presburger modal logic, which extends graded modal logic with linear inequalities over numbers of successors, and probabilistic modal logic with polynomial inequalities over probabilities. We establish the theoretical upper bound using a type elimination algorithm. We also provide a global caching algorithm that offers potential for practical reasoning
Magnetic vortex oscillator driven by dc spin-polarized current
Transfer of angular momentum from a spin-polarized current to a ferromagnet
provides an efficient means to control the dynamics of nanomagnets. A peculiar
consequence of this spin-torque, the ability to induce persistent oscillations
of a nanomagnet by applying a dc current, has previously been reported only for
spatially uniform nanomagnets. Here we demonstrate that a quintessentially
nonuniform magnetic structure, a magnetic vortex, isolated within a nanoscale
spin valve structure, can be excited into persistent microwave-frequency
oscillations by a spin-polarized dc current. Comparison to micromagnetic
simulations leads to identification of the oscillations with a precession of
the vortex core. The oscillations, which can be obtained in essentially zero
magnetic field, exhibit linewidths that can be narrower than 300 kHz, making
these highly compact spin-torque vortex oscillator devices potential candidates
for microwave signal-processing applications, and a powerful new tool for
fundamental studies of vortex dynamics in magnetic nanostructures.Comment: 14 pages, 4 figure
Moderate and heavy metabolic stress interval training improve arterial stiffness and heart rate dynamics in humans
Traditional continuous aerobic exercise training attenuates age-related increases of arterial stiffness, however, training studies have not determined whether metabolic stress impacts these favourable effects. Twenty untrained healthy participants (n = 11 heavy metabolic stress interval training, n = 9 moderate metabolic stress interval training) completed 6 weeks of moderate or heavy intensity interval training matched for total work and exercise duration. Carotid artery stiffness, blood pressure contour analysis, and linear and non-linear heart rate variability were assessed before and following training. Overall, carotid arterial stiffness was reduced (p 0.05). This study demonstrates the effectiveness of interval training at improving arterial stiffness and autonomic function, however, the metabolic stress was not a mediator of this effect. In addition, these changes were also independent of improvements in aerobic capacity, which were only induced by training that involved a high metabolic stress
Search for new phenomena in final states with an energetic jet and large missing transverse momentum in pp collisions at √ s = 8 TeV with the ATLAS detector
Results of a search for new phenomena in final states with an energetic jet and large missing transverse momentum are reported. The search uses 20.3 fb−1 of √ s = 8 TeV data collected in 2012 with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. Events are required to have at least one jet with pT > 120 GeV and no leptons. Nine signal regions are considered with increasing missing transverse momentum requirements between Emiss T > 150 GeV and Emiss T > 700 GeV. Good agreement is observed between the number of events in data and Standard Model expectations. The results are translated into exclusion limits on models with either large extra spatial dimensions, pair production of weakly interacting dark matter candidates, or production of very light gravitinos in a gauge-mediated supersymmetric model. Plectin as a prognostic marker in non-metastatic oral squamous cell carcinoma
Background: Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is associated with a poor 5-year survival rate. In general,
patients diagnosed with small tumors have a fairly good prognosis, but some small tumors have an aggressive
behavior leading to early death. There are at present no reliable prognostic biomarkers for oral cancers. Thus, to
optimize treatment for the individual patient, there is a need for biomarkers that can predict tumor behavior.
Method: In the present study the potential prognostic value of plectin was evaluated by a tissue microarray (TMA)
based immunohistochemical analysis of primary tumor tissue obtained from a North Norwegian cohort of 115 patients
diagnosed with OSCC. The expression of plectin was compared with clinicopathological variables and 5 year survival.
Results: The statistical analysis revealed that low expression of plectin in the tumor cells predicted a favorable
outcome for patients with non-metastatic disease (p = 0.008). Furthermore, the expression of plectin was found
to correlate (p = 0.01) with the expression of uPAR, which we have previously found to be a potential prognostic
marker for T1N0 tumors.
Conclusions: Our results indicate that low expression of plectin predicts a favorable outcome for patients with
non-metastatic OSCC and the expression level of plectin may therefore be used in the treatment stratification for
patients with early stage disease
Immunopositivity for Histone MacroH2A1 Isoforms Marks Steatosis-Associated Hepatocellular Carcinoma.
Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the most common cancers worldwide. Prevention and risk reduction are important and the identification of specific biomarkers for early diagnosis of HCC represents an active field of research. Increasing evidence indicates that fat accumulation in the liver, defined as hepatosteatosis, is an independent and strong risk factor for developing an HCC. MacroH2A1, a histone protein generally associated with the repressed regions of chromosomes, is involved in hepatic lipid metabolism and is present in two alternative spliced isoforms, macroH2A1.1 and macroH2A1.2. These isoforms have been shown to predict lung and colon cancer recurrence but to our knowledge, their role in fatty-liver associated HCC has not been investigated previously
Is Sustained Virological Response a Marker of Treatment Efficacy in Patients with Chronic Hepatitis C Viral Infection with No Response or Relapse to Previous Antiviral Intervention?
Background: Randomised clinical trials (RCTs) of antiviral interventions in patients with chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection use sustained virological response (SVR) as the main outcome. There is sparse information on long-term mortality from RCTs. Methods: We created a decision tree model based on a Cochrane systematic review on interferon retreatment for patients who did not respond to initial therapy or who relapsed following SVR. Extrapolating data to 20 years, we modelled the outcome from three scenarios: (1) observed medium-term (5 year) annual mortality rates continue to the long term (20 years); (2) long-term annual mortality in retreatment responders falls to that of the general population while retreatment non-responders continue at the medium-term mortality; (3) long-term annual mortality in retreatment non-responders is the same as control group non-responders (i.e., the increased treatment-related medium mortality “wears off”). Results: The mean differences in life expectancy over 20 years with interferon versus control in the first, second, and third scenarios were -0.34 years (95% confidence interval (CI) -0.71 to 0.03), -0.23 years (95% CI -0.69 to 0.24), and -0.01 (95% CI -0.3 to 0.27), respectively. The life expectancy was always lower in the interferon group than in the control group in scenario 1. In scenario 3, the interferon group had a longer life expectancy than the control group only when more than 7% in the interferon group achieved SVR. Conclusions: SVR may be a good prognostic marker but does not seem to be a valid surrogate marker for assessing HCV treatment efficacy of interferon retreatment. The SVR threshold at which retreatment increases life expectancy may be different for different drugs depending upon the adverse event profile and treatment efficacy. This has to be determined for each drug by RCTs and appropriate modelling before SVR can be accepted as a surrogate marker
Opposing effects of final population density and stress on Escherichia coli mutation rate
Evolution depends on mutations. For an individual genotype, the rate at which mutations arise is known to increase with various stressors (stress-induced mutagenesis-SIM) and decrease at high final population density (density-associated mutation-rate plasticity-DAMP). We hypothesised that these two forms of mutation-rate plasticity would have opposing effects across a nutrient gradient. Here we test this hypothesis, culturing Escherichia coli in increasingly rich media. We distinguish an increase in mutation rate with added nutrients through SIM (dependent on error-prone polymerases Pol IV and Pol V) and an opposing effect of DAMP (dependent on MutT, which removes oxidised G nucleotides). The combination of DAMP and SIM results in a mutation rate minimum at intermediate nutrient levels (which can support 7 × 10 cells ml ).
