    THE USE OF BIOMECHANICALLY ADJUSTABLE CYCLING PEDALS IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF REHABILITATION PROTOCOLS FOR ANKLE AND KNEE INJURIES

    This paper examines the use of stationary cycling with a biomechanically adjustable pedal (Biopedal) in the development of rehabilitation protocols for the knee and ankle. This paper draws on previous research which examines the role of the foot pedal interface and cycling pathomechanics, as well as research which evaluates the differences in E.M.G. activity utilizing an orthopaedically adjustable pedal. As a result of this research and clinical findings, rehabilitation protocols for selected ankle and knee injuries were developed utilizing the three-plane adjustable pedal and stationary exercise bicycle. These protocols have been clinically tested and are presented. The results indicate that the adjustable pedal can be used to reduce trauma to connective tissue structures. It can be used in rehabilitation to minimize risk of injury during active recovery and reinforce the integrity of and support injured structures

    A solvent-resistant halogen bond

    The effect of solvent on the stabilities of complexes involving a single H-bond or halogen-bond (X-bond) has been quantified. Association constants for binary complexes of 4-(phenylazo)phenol, molecular iodine, tetramethylurea and tetramethylthiourea have been measured in fifteen different solvents by UV/vis absorption and 1H NMR titration experiments. The stabilities of the H-bonded complexes decrease by more than three orders of magnitude with increasing solvent polarity. In contrast, the X-bonded complex of molecular iodine with tetramethylthiourea is remarkably insensitive to the nature of the solvent (association constants measured in alkanes and alcohols are similar). The results suggest that, in contrast to H-bonds, where electrostatics determine thermodynamic stability, charge-transfer interactions make a major contribution to the stability of these X-bonded complexes rendering them resistant to increases in solvent polarity

    The sintering, sintered microstructure and mechanical properties of Ti-Fe-Si Alloys

    A systematic study has been conducted of the sintering, sintered microstructure and tensile properties of a range of lower cost Ti-Fe-Si alloys, including Ti-3Fe-(0-4)Si, Ti-(3-6)Fe-0.5Si, and Ti-(3-6)Fe-1Si (in wt pct throughout). Small additions of Si (≀1 pct) noticeably improve the as-sintered tensile properties of Ti-3Fe alloy, including the ductility, with fine titanium silicides (TiSi) being dispersed in both the α and ÎČ phases. Conversely, additions of >1 pct Si produce coarse and/or networked TiSi silicides along the grain boundaries leading to predominantly intergranular fracture and, hence, poor ductility, although the tensile strength continues to increase because of the reinforcement by TiSi. Increasing the Fe content in the Ti-xFe-0.5/ 1.0Si alloys above 3 pct markedly increases the average grain size and changes the morphology of the α-phase phase to much thinner and more acicular laths.     Tritium Beta Decay, Neutrino Mass Matrices and Interactions Beyond the Standard Model

    The interference of charge-changing interactions, weaker than the V-A Standard Model (SM) interaction and having a different Lorentz structure, with that SM interaction, can, in principle, produce effects near the end point of the Tritium beta decay spectrum which are of a different character from those produced by the purely kinematic effect of neutrino mass expected in the simplest extension of the SM. We show that the existence of more than one mass eigenstate can lead to interference effects at the end point that are stronger than those occurring over the entire spectrum. We discuss these effects both for the special case of Dirac neutrinos and the more general case of Majorana neutrinos and show that, for the present precision of the experiments, one formula should suffice to express the interference effects in all cases.     Atom-efficient synthesis of a benchmark electrolyte for magnesium battery applications

    The benchmark magnesium electrolyte, [Mg2Cl3]+ [AlPh4]−, can be prepared in a 100% atom-economic fashion by a ligand exchange reaction between AlCl3 and two molar equivalents of MgPh2. NMR and vibrational spectroscopy indicate that the reported approach results in a simpler ionic composition than the more widely adopted synthesis route of combining PhMgCl with AlCl3. Electrochemical performance has been validated by polarisation tests and cyclic voltammetry, which demonstrate excellent stability of electrolytes produced via this atom-efficient approach

    Plasma p217+tau versus NAV4694 amyloid and MK6240 tau PET across the Alzheimer's continuum

    Introduction We evaluated a new Simoa plasma assay for phosphorylated tau (P-tau) at aa217 enhanced by additional p-tau sites (p217+tau). Methods Plasma p217+tau levels were compared to 18F-NAV4694 amyloid beta (AÎČ) positron emission tomography (PET) and 18F-MK6240 tau PET in 174 cognitively impaired (CI) and 223 cognitively unimpaired (CU) participants. Results Compared to AÎČ− CU, the plasma levels of p217+tau increased 2-fold in AÎČ+ CU and 3.5-fold in AÎČ+ CI. In AÎČ− the p217+tau levels did not differ significantly between CU and CI. P217+tau correlated with AÎČ centiloids P = .67 (CI, P = .64; CU, P = .45) and tau SUVRMT P = .63 (CI, P = .69; CU, P = .34). Area under curve (AUC) for Alzheimer's disease (AD) dementia versus AÎČ− CU was 0.94, for AD dementia versus other dementia was 0.93, for AÎČ+ versus AÎČ− PET was 0.89, and for tau+ versus tau− PET was 0.89.     Measurement of the B0-anti-B0-Oscillation Frequency with Inclusive Dilepton Events

    The B0B^0-Bˉ0\bar B^0 oscillation frequency has been measured with a sample of 23 million \B\bar B pairs collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric B Factory at SLAC. In this sample, we select events in which both B mesons decay semileptonically and use the charge of the leptons to identify the flavor of each B meson. A simultaneous fit to the decay time difference distributions for opposite- and same-sign dilepton events gives Δmd=0.493±0.012(stat)±0.009(syst)\Delta m_d = 0.493 \pm 0.012{(stat)}\pm 0.009{(syst)} ps−1^{-1}.Comment: 7 pages, 1 figure, submitted to Physical Review Letter

    Search for direct production of charginos and neutralinos in events with three leptons and missing transverse momentum in √s = 7 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector

    A search for the direct production of charginos and neutralinos in final states with three electrons or muons and missing transverse momentum is presented. The analysis is based on 4.7 fb−1 of proton–proton collision data delivered by the Large Hadron Collider and recorded with the ATLAS detector. Observations are consistent with Standard Model expectations in three signal regions that are either depleted or enriched in Z-boson decays. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are set in R-parity conserving phenomenological minimal supersymmetric models and in simplified models, significantly extending previous results

    Jet size dependence of single jet suppression in lead-lead collisions at sqrt(s(NN)) = 2.76 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the LHC

    Measurements of inclusive jet suppression in heavy ion collisions at the LHC provide direct sensitivity to the physics of jet quenching. In a sample of lead-lead collisions at sqrt(s) = 2.76 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of approximately 7 inverse microbarns, ATLAS has measured jets with a calorimeter over the pseudorapidity interval |eta| < 2.1 and over the transverse momentum range 38 < pT < 210 GeV. Jets were reconstructed using the anti-kt algorithm with values for the distance parameter that determines the nominal jet radius of R = 0.2, 0.3, 0.4 and 0.5. The centrality dependence of the jet yield is characterized by the jet "central-to-peripheral ratio," Rcp. Jet production is found to be suppressed by approximately a factor of two in the 10% most central collisions relative to peripheral collisions. Rcp varies smoothly with centrality as characterized by the number of participating nucleons. The observed suppression is only weakly dependent on jet radius and transverse momentum. These results provide the first direct measurement of inclusive jet suppression in heavy ion collisions and complement previous measurements of dijet transverse energy imbalance at the LHC.Comment: 15 pages plus author list (30 pages total), 8 figures, 2 tables, submitted to Physics Letters B.
