Lorentz invariance for mixed neutrinos

We show that a proper field theoretical treatment of mixed (Dirac) neutrinos leads to non-trivial dispersion relations for the flavor states. We analyze such a situation in the framework of the non-linear relativity schemes recently proposed by Magueijo and Smolin. We finally examine the experimental implications of our theoretical proposals by considering the spectrum and the end-point of beta decay in tritium.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures. Developing tools for the e-learning platform mathE

MathE (mathe.pixel-online.org) is an e-learning platform for higher education developed and implemented by a consortium of seven institutional partners from five European countries. The aim of the project is to enhance the quality of teaching and improve pedagogies and assessment methods by facilitating the identification of students’ gaps in Math, providing appropriate digital tools and promoting self-evaluation with immediate feedback. The Polytechnic Institute of Bragança (IPB), in Portugal, is one of the consortium members: sixteen of its teachers collaborate in the development of this platform, being responsible for thirteen of the topics/subtopics in which the platform is structured. Such topics cover a wide range of contents, from linear transformations to integration, from graph theory to probabilities. The articulation of the topics of the MathE collection corresponds to the canonic mathematics content of engineering, business and education degrees. The MathE platform is organized into three main sections: Student´s Assessment, MathE Library and Community of Practice. So far, IPB has already developed a collection of around 800 questions for the student´s assessment section and is currently developing the MathE Library. More than 350 students from IPB are using the MathE platform; some offered as volunteers, whose role is testing the behavior of the platform as well as looking for bugs and other details that require improvement, while others are already using the platform in their study. Este artigo apresenta uma revisão bibliográfica sobre produtos não madeireiros visando traçar um panorama sobre os seus principais conceitos, classificação, valoração e mercados. Constata-se a necessidade de análises mais aprofundadas sobre a importância sócio-econômica desse grupo de produtos, criando assim, uma nova linha de pesquisa florestal. Estas analises são fundamentais no caso brasileiro devido a diversidade e extensão do ecossistemas florestais existentes no país. Influência do período de cultivo do Capim-Pé-De-Galinha-Gigante (Eleusine coracana) na fitorremediação de solo contaminado com o Herbicida Picloram.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a influência do tempo de cultivo do capim-pé-degalinha- gigante (Eleusine coracana) sobre a fitorremediação de solo contaminado com o herbicida picloram. Os tratamentos foram compostos pela combinação entre quatro períodos de cultivo da espécie vegetal Eleusine coracana (0, 60, 80 e 100 dias) e de três doses do picloram (0, 80 e 160 g ha-1). Ao término do tempo estabelecido de atuação da espécie fitorremediadora, efetuou-se a semeadura das espécies bioindicadoras da presença do picloram: tomate (cultivar Santa Clara) e soja (cultivar Monsoy 6101). As espécies bioindicadoras demonstraram alta sensibilidade à presença do picloram no solo, sendo inviável o cultivo dessas culturas em áreas contaminadas com esse herbicida sem a execução de algum procedimento remediador. O cultivo prévio de E. coracana por 60 dias garantiu crescimento inicial satisfatório das plantas de soja e de tomate cultivadas em solo que recebeu previamente a aplicação de até 160 g ha-1 de picloram, contudo, essas plantas bioindicadoras apresentaram sintomas visíveis de intoxicação do herbicida

Development of pH-Sensitive magnetoliposomes containing shape anisotropic nanoparticles for potential application in combined cancer therapy

Late diagnosis and systemic toxicity associated with conventional treatments make oncological therapy significantly difficult. In this context, nanomedicine emerges as a new approach in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cancer. In this work, pH-sensitive solid magnetoliposomes (SMLs) were developed for controlled release of the chemotherapeutic drug doxorubicin (DOX). Shape anisotropic magnetic nanoparticles of magnesium ferrite with partial substitution by calcium (Mg0.75Ca0.25Fe2O4) were synthesized, with and without calcination, and their structural, morphological and magnetic properties were investigated. Their superparamagnetic properties were evaluated and heating capabilities proven, either by exposure to an alternating magnetic field (AMF) (magnetic hyperthermia) or by irradiation with near-infrared (NIR) light (photothermia). The Mg0.75Ca0.25Fe2O4 calcined nanoparticles were selected to integrate the SMLs, surrounded by a lipid bilayer of DOPE:Ch:CHEMS (45:45:10). DOX was encapsulated in the nanosystems with an efficiency above 98%. DOX release assays showed a much more efficient release of the drug at pH = 5 compared to the release kinetics at physiological pH. By subjecting tumor cells to DOX-loaded SMLs, cell viability was significantly reduced, confirming that they can release the encapsulated drug. Índices produtivos de abelhas nativas associados à condições ambientais em Arapiuns, Pará.

Os animais quando submetidos a condições ambientais fora da zona de termoneutralidade desenvolvem estratégias de sobrevivência que podem comprometer suas funcionalidades, principalmente na produção de alimentos às populações. Objetivou-se identificar índices produtivos de abelhas nativas associados às condições ambientais em colônias de Melipona interrupta criadas racionalmente na comunidade Coroca, Rio Arapiuns. Foi realizado a bionomia de 15 colmeias durante um ano e para diagnosticar as condições em colônias dessas abelhas utilizou-se um termógrafo infravermelho. As chuvas na região concentram-se entre os meses de janeiro a junho, sendo as maiores ofertas pluviais nos meses de março e abril, contabilizando-se 280 mm e 270 mm, respectivamente. No período menos chuvoso as temperaturas médias do ar encontravam-se mais elevadas, sendo esse período o mais propício à floração das espécies nativas, aumentando a oferta de alimentos às abelhas e consequentemente aumenta a produção de mel. Os padrões térmicos nos alvos indicaram que a entrada dos potes de mel estava com as temperaturas mais elevadas, atingindo 43,0 ºC com amplitude térmica de 3,4 °C. Na parede das caixas e nos espaços entre os potes de mel foram detectadas temperaturas semelhantes de 34,0 °C que apontavam indícios de estresse térmico, conforme resultados disponíveis na literatura. Como as abelhas utilizam estratégias de termorregulação notou-se reduzida oscilação da temperatura nos potes de mel, explicada pela capacidade da cera em funcionar como isolante e conservante para as colmeias. Conclui-se que a produtividade de mel no período das mais elevadas temperaturas reforça a adaptabilidade dessa espécie às condições climáticas da região

Search for squarks and gluinos in events with isolated leptons, jets and missing transverse momentum at s√=8 TeV with the ATLAS detector

The results of a search for supersymmetry in final states containing at least one isolated lepton (electron or muon), jets and large missing transverse momentum with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider are reported. The search is based on proton-proton collision data at a centre-of-mass energy s√=8 TeV collected in 2012, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 20 fb−1. No significant excess above the Standard Model expectation is observed. Limits are set on supersymmetric particle masses for various supersymmetric models. Depending on the model, the search excludes gluino masses up to 1.32 TeV and squark masses up to 840 GeV. Limits are also set on the parameters of a minimal universal extra dimension model, excluding a compactification radius of 1/R c = 950 GeV for a cut-off scale times radius (ΛR c) of approximately 30
