    Can acclimation of thermal tolerance, in adults and across generations, act as a buffer against climate change in tropical marine ectotherms?

    Thermal acclimation capacity was investigated in adults of three tropical marine invertebrates, the subtidal barnacle Striatobalanus amaryllis, the intertidal gastropod Volegalea cochlidium and the intertidal barnacle Amphibalanus amphitrite. To test the relative importance of transgenerational acclimation, the developmental acclimation capacity of A. amphitrite was investigated in F1 and F2 generations reared at a subset of the same incubation temperatures. The increase in CTmax (measured through loss of key behavioural metrics) of F0 adults across the incubation temperature range 25.4–33.4 °C was low: 0.00 °C (V. cochlidium), 0.05 °C (S. amaryllis) and 0.06 °C (A. amphitrite) per 1 °C increase in incubation temperature (the acclimation response ratio; ARR). Although the effect of generation was not significant, across the incubation temperature range of 29.4–33.4 °C, the increase in CTmax in the F1 (0.30 °C) and F2 (0.15 °C) generations of A. amphitrite was greater than in the F0 (0.10 °C). These correspond to ARR's of 0.03 °C (F0), 0.08 °C (F1) and 0.04 °C (F2), respectively. The variability in CTmax between individuals in each treatment was maintained across generations, despite the high mortality of progeny. Further research is required to investigate the potential for transgenerational acclimation to provide an extra buffer for tropical marine species facing climate warming

Plus particulièrement, nous nous intéressons à la dispersion de particules sédimentaires non cohésives, de type sable, au cours de leur transport en suspension. En s'appuyant sur la littérature des écoulements diphasiques, nous introduisons un modèle du premier ordre basé sur la théorie cinétique des écoulements granulaires (Modèle ks-kfs) pour estimer le tenseur de la covariance des vitesses fluide-particule et ainsi fermer le modèle de dispersion turbulente pour les particules. La comparaison avec l'expérience montre que le modèle reproduit qualitativement les caractéristiques de l'écoulement notamment l'existence d'une différence de vitesse entre les particules et le fluide

    We have designed, fabricated and measured high-Q λ/2\lambda/2 coplanar waveguide microwave resonators whose resonance frequency is made tunable with magnetic field by inserting a DC-SQUID array (including 1 or 7 SQUIDs) inside. Their tunability range is 30% of the zero field frequency. Their quality factor reaches up to 3×104\times10^4.     Hyper/neuroinflammation in COVID-19 and suicide etiopathogenesis: Hypothesis for a nefarious collision?

    open13Accumulating scientific and clinical evidence highlighted pathological hyperinflammation as a cardinal feature of SARS-CoV-2 infection and acute COVID-19 disease. With the emergence of long COVID-19 syndrome, several chronic health consequences, including neuropsychiatric sequelae, have gained attention from the public and medical communities. Since inflammatory mediators have also been accredited as putative biomarkers of suicidal ideations and behaviors, hyper- and neuroinflammation might share some colliding points, overlapping and being interconnected in the context of COVID-19. This review aims to provide a summary of current knowledge on the molecular and cellular mechanisms of COVID-19-associated hyper/neuroinflammation with focus on their relevance to the inflammatory hypothesis of suicide development. Subsequently, strategies to alleviate COVID-19 hyper/neuroinflammation by immunomodulatory agents (many of which at experimental stages) as well as psychopharmacologic/psychotherapeutic approaches are also mentioned.     In this paper, two kinds of evaluation index for the haptic motion analysis in parallel multiple degrees–of–freedom (MDOF) system are proposed. At first, the spatial modal decomposition method based on discrete Fourier series expansion (DFS) is presented. Spatial modal information expresses a motion element that corresponds to a specific physical action. The spatial modal information can mathematically be defined by the Fourier coefficients. Then, this paper proposes the total harmonic distortion (THD) and the content rate of the haptic modal information as motion evaluation indexes. THD of the spatial modal information can evaluate the complexity of the human motion and/or the deformability of the contact environment. Content rate of the spatial modal information can evaluate the priority of motion element. Some experimental results on the bilateral motion control of a parallel five DOF haptic system are shown, in order to confirm the utility of the proposed indexes.U ovom radu predložena su dva indikatora vrednovanja haptičkog gibanja u paralelnom sustavu s više stupnjeva slobode. Prikazana je metoda prostorne modalne dekompozicije zasnovana na proširenom diskretnom Fourierovom redu. Prostorna modalna informacija predstavlja element koji odgovara specifičnoj fizikalnoj radnji. Prostorna modalna informacija matematički se može opisati koristeći Fourierove koeficijente. U ovom se radu kao indikatori za evaluaciju gibanja predlažu ukupno harmoničko izobličenje i brzina haptičke modalne informacije. Ukupnim harmoničkim izobličenjem prostorne modalne informacije može se ocijeniti kompleksnost ljudskog gibanja i/ili deformabilnost kontaktne okoline. Przina prostorne modalne informacije ocjenjuje prioritet elementa u gibanju.     Service recovery strategies have been identified as a critical factor in the success of. service organizations. This study develops a conceptual frame work to investigate how specific service recovery strategies influence the emotional, cognitive and negative behavioural responses of . consumers., as well as how emotion and cognition influence negative behavior. Understanding the impact of specific service recovery strategies will allow service providers' to more deliberately and intentionally engage in strategies that result in positive organizational outcomes. This study was conducted using a 2 x 2 between-subjects quasi-experimental design. The results suggest that service recovery has a significant impact on emotion, cognition and negative behavior. Similarly, satisfaction, negative emotion and positive emotion all influence negative behavior but distributive justice has no effect

    Theory of charge transport in diffusive normal metal / unconventional singlet superconductor contacts

    We analyze the transport properties of contacts between unconventional superconductor and normal diffusive metal in the framework of the extended circuit theory. We obtain a general boundary condition for the Keldysh-Nambu Green's functions at the interface that is valid for arbitrary transparencies of the interface. This allows us to investigate the voltage-dependent conductance (conductance spectrum) of a diffusive normal metal (DN)/ unconventional singlet superconductor junction in both ballistic and diffusive cases. For d-wave superconductor, we calculate conductance spectra numerically for different orientations of the junctions, resistances, Thouless energies in DN, and transparencies of the interface. We demonstrate that conductance spectra exhibit a variety of features including a VV-shaped gap-like structure, zero bias conductance peak (ZBCP) and zero bias conductance dip (ZBCD). We show that two distinct mechanisms: (i) coherent Andreev reflection (CAR) in DN and (ii) formation of midgap Andreev bound state (MABS) at the interface of d-wave superconductors, are responsible for ZBCP, their relative importance being dependent on the angle α\alpha between the interface normal and the crystal axis of d-wave superconductors. For α=0\alpha=0, the ZBCP is due to CAR in the junctions of low transparency with small Thouless energies, this is similar to the case of diffusive normal metal / insulator /s-wave superconductor junctions. With increase of α\alpha from zero to π/4\pi/4, the MABS contribution to ZBCP becomes more prominent and the effect of CAR is gradually suppressed. Such complex spectral features shall be observable in conductance spectra of realistic high-TcT_c junctions at very low temperature

    Search for direct production of charginos and neutralinos in events with three leptons and missing transverse momentum in √s = 7 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector

    A search for the direct production of charginos and neutralinos in final states with three electrons or muons and missing transverse momentum is presented. The analysis is based on 4.7 fb−1 of proton–proton collision data delivered by the Large Hadron Collider and recorded with the ATLAS detector. Observations are consistent with Standard Model expectations in three signal regions that are either depleted or enriched in Z-boson decays. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are set in R-parity conserving phenomenological minimal supersymmetric models and in simplified models, significantly extending previous results

    Jet size dependence of single jet suppression in lead-lead collisions at sqrt(s(NN)) = 2.76 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the LHC

    Measurements of inclusive jet suppression in heavy ion collisions at the LHC provide direct sensitivity to the physics of jet quenching. In a sample of lead-lead collisions at sqrt(s) = 2.76 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of approximately 7 inverse microbarns, ATLAS has measured jets with a calorimeter over the pseudorapidity interval |eta| < 2.1 and over the transverse momentum range 38 < pT < 210 GeV. Jets were reconstructed using the anti-kt algorithm with values for the distance parameter that determines the nominal jet radius of R = 0.2, 0.3, 0.4 and 0.5. The centrality dependence of the jet yield is characterized by the jet "central-to-peripheral ratio," Rcp. Jet production is found to be suppressed by approximately a factor of two in the 10% most central collisions relative to peripheral collisions. Rcp varies smoothly with centrality as characterized by the number of participating nucleons. The observed suppression is only weakly dependent on jet radius and transverse momentum. These results provide the first direct measurement of inclusive jet suppression in heavy ion collisions and complement previous measurements of dijet transverse energy imbalance at the LHC.Comment: 15 pages plus author list (30 pages total), 8 figures, 2 tables, submitted to Physics Letters B.
