Gas-liquid-solid flow modelling in a bubble column
An alternative approach to the modelling of solid-liquid and gas-liquid-solid flows for a 5:1 height to width aspect ratio bubble column is presented here. A modified transport equation for the volume fraction of a dispersed phase has been developed for the investigation of turbulent buoyancy driven flows (Chem. Eng. Proc., in press). In this study, a modified transport equation has been employed for discrete phase motion considering both solid-liquid and gas-liquid-solid flows. The modelling of the three-phase flow in a bubble column was achieved in the following case: injecting a slug of solid particles into the column for 10 s at a velocity of 0.1 m s-1 and then the gas phase flow was initiated with a superficial gas velocity of 0.02 cm s-1. © 2003 Elsevier B.V. Brane decay of a (4+n)-dimensional rotating black hole: spin-0 particles
In this work, we study the `scalar channel' of the emission of Hawking
radiation from a (4+n)-dimensional, rotating black hole on the brane. We
numerically solve both the radial and angular part of the equation of motion
for the scalar field, and determine the exact values of the absorption
probability and of the spheroidal harmonics, respectively. With these, we
calculate the particle, energy and angular momentum emission rates, as well as
the angular variation in the flux and power spectra -- a distinctive feature of
emission during the spin-down phase of the life of the produced black hole. Our
analysis is free from any approximations, with our results being valid for
arbitrarily large values of the energy of the emitted particle, angular
momentum of the black hole and dimensionality of spacetime. We finally compute
the total emissivities for the number of particles, energy and angular momentum
and compare their relative behaviour for different values of the parameters of
the theory.Comment: 24 pages, 13 figure
A High Statistics Search for Ultra-High Energy Gamma-Ray Emission from Cygnus X-3 and Hercules X-1
We have carried out a high statistics (2 Billion events) search for
ultra-high energy gamma-ray emission from the X-ray binary sources Cygnus X-3
and Hercules X-1. Using data taken with the CASA-MIA detector over a five year
period (1990-1995), we find no evidence for steady emission from either source
at energies above 115 TeV. The derived upper limits on such emission are more
than two orders of magnitude lower than earlier claimed detections. We also
find no evidence for neutral particle or gamma-ray emission from either source
on time scales of one day and 0.5 hr. For Cygnus X-3, there is no evidence for
emission correlated with the 4.8 hr X-ray periodicity or with the occurrence of
large radio flares. Unless one postulates that these sources were very active
earlier and are now dormant, the limits presented here put into question the
earlier results, and highlight the difficulties that possible future
experiments will have in detecting gamma-ray signals at ultra-high energies.Comment: 26 LaTeX pages, 16 PostScript figures, uses psfig.sty to be published

Evolutionary Algorithm Based on New Crossover for the Biclustering of Gene Expression Data
Â
Microarray represents a recent multidisciplinary technology. It measures the expression levels of several genes under different biological conditions, which allows to generate multiple data. These data can be analyzed through biclustering method to determinate groups of genes presenting a similar behavior under specific groups of conditions.
This paper proposes a new evolutionary algorithm based on a new crossover method, dedicated to the biclustering of gene expression data. This proposed crossover method ensures the creation of new biclusters with better quality. To evaluate its performance, an experimental study was done on real microarray datasets. These experimentations show that our algorithm extracts high quality biclusters with highly correlated genes that are particularly involved in specific ontology structure
Search for the standard model Higgs boson decaying to a pair in events with no charged leptons and large missing transverse energy using the full CDF data set
We report on a search for the standard model Higgs boson produced in
association with a vector boson in the full data set of proton-antiproton
collisions at TeV recorded by the CDF II detector at the
Tevatron, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9.45 fb. We
consider events having no identified charged lepton, a transverse energy
imbalance, and two or three jets, of which at least one is consistent with
originating from the decay of a quark. We place 95% credibility level upper
limits on the production cross section times standard model branching fraction
for several mass hypotheses between 90 and . For a Higgs
boson mass of , the observed (expected) limit is 6.7
(3.6) times the standard model prediction.Comment: Accepted by Phys. Rev. Let
Search for the standard model Higgs boson decaying to a bb pair in events with one charged lepton and large missing transverse energy using the full CDF data set
We present a search for the standard model Higgs boson produced in
association with a W boson in sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV p-pbar collision data
collected with the CDF II detector at the Tevatron corresponding to an
integrated luminosity of 9.45 fb-1. In events consistent with the decay of the
Higgs boson to a bottom-quark pair and the W boson to an electron or muon and a
neutrino, we set 95% credibility level upper limits on the WH production cross
section times the H->bb branching ratio as a function of Higgs boson mass. At a
Higgs boson mass of 125 GeV/c2 we observe (expect) a limit of 4.9 (2.8) times
the standard model value.Comment: Submitted to Phys. Rev. Lett (v2 contains clarifications suggested by

Search for the standard model Higgs boson decaying to a bb pair in events with two oppositely-charged leptons using the full CDF data set
We present a search for the standard model Higgs boson produced in
association with a Z boson in data collected with the CDF II detector at the
Tevatron, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9.45/fb. In events
consistent with the decay of the Higgs boson to a bottom-quark pair and the Z
boson to electron or muon pairs, we set 95% credibility level upper limits on
the ZH production cross section times the H -> bb branching ratio as a function
of Higgs boson mass. At a Higgs boson mass of 125 GeV/c^2 we observe (expect) a
limit of 7.1 (3.9) times the standard model value.Comment: To be submitted to Phys. Rev. Let
Measurement of the polarisation of W bosons produced with large transverse momentum in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV with the ATLAS experiment
This paper describes an analysis of the angular distribution of W->enu and
W->munu decays, using data from pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV recorded with
the ATLAS detector at the LHC in 2010, corresponding to an integrated
luminosity of about 35 pb^-1. Using the decay lepton transverse momentum and
the missing transverse energy, the W decay angular distribution projected onto
the transverse plane is obtained and analysed in terms of helicity fractions
f0, fL and fR over two ranges of W transverse momentum (ptw): 35 < ptw < 50 GeV
and ptw > 50 GeV. Good agreement is found with theoretical predictions. For ptw
> 50 GeV, the values of f0 and fL-fR, averaged over charge and lepton flavour,
are measured to be : f0 = 0.127 +/- 0.030 +/- 0.108 and fL-fR = 0.252 +/- 0.017
+/- 0.030, where the first uncertainties are statistical, and the second
include all systematic effects.Comment: 19 pages plus author list (34 pages total), 9 figures, 11 tables,
