Anomalous magnetophotoluminescence as a result of level repulsion in arrays of quantum dots
Selectively excited photoluminescence (SPL) of an array of self-organized
InGaAs quantum dots has been measured in a magnetic field up to
11T. Anomalous magnetic field sensitivity of the SPL spectra has been observed
under conditions for which the regular photoluminescence spectra is insensitive
to the magnetic field due to large inhomogeneous broadening. The anomalous
sensitivity is interpreted in terms of the repulsion of excited levels of the
dots in a random potential. A theory presented to describe this phenomena is in
excellent agreement with the experimental data. The data estimated the
correlation in the positions of excited levels of the dots to be 94%. The
magnetic field dependence allows the determination of the reduced cyclotron
effective mass in a dot. For our sample we have obtained

Ownership and control in a competitive industry
We study a differentiated product market in which an investor initially owns a controlling stake in one of two competing firms and may acquire a non-controlling or a controlling stake in a competitor, either directly using her own assets, or indirectly via the controlled firm. While industry profits are maximized within a symmetric two product monopoly, the investor attains this only in exceptional cases. Instead, she sometimes acquires a noncontrolling stake. Or she invests asymmetrically rather than pursuing a full takeover if she acquires a controlling one. The two-dimensional random-bond Ising model, free fermions and the network model
We develop a recently-proposed mapping of the two-dimensional Ising model
with random exchange (RBIM), via the transfer matrix, to a network model for a
disordered system of non-interacting fermions. The RBIM transforms in this way
to a localisation problem belonging to one of a set of non-standard symmetry
classes, known as class D; the transition between paramagnet and ferromagnet is
equivalent to a delocalisation transition between an insulator and a quantum
Hall conductor. We establish the mapping as an exact and efficient tool for
numerical analysis: using it, the computational effort required to study a
system of width is proportional to , and not exponential in as
with conventional algorithms. We show how the approach may be used to calculate
for the RBIM: the free energy; typical correlation lengths in quasi-one
dimension for both the spin and the disorder operators; even powers of
spin-spin correlation functions and their disorder-averages. We examine in
detail the square-lattice, nearest-neighbour RBIM, in which bonds are
independently antiferromagnetic with probability , and ferromagnetic with
probability . Studying temperatures , we obtain precise
coordinates in the plane for points on the phase boundary between
ferromagnet and paramagnet, and for the multicritical (Nishimori) point. We
demonstrate scaling flow towards the pure Ising fixed point at small , and

Elementary landscape decomposition of the 0-1 unconstrained quadratic optimization
Journal of Heuristics, 19(4), pp.711-728Landscapesâ theory provides a formal framework in which combinatorial optimization problems can be theoretically characterized as a sum of an especial kind of landscape called elementary landscape. The elementary landscape decomposition of a combinatorial optimization problem is a useful tool for understanding the problem. Such decomposition provides an additional knowledge on the problem that can be exploited to explain the behavior of some existing algorithms when they are applied to the problem or to create new search methods for the problem. In this paper we analyze the 0-1 Unconstrained Quadratic Optimization from the point of view of landscapesâ theory. We prove that the problem can be written as the sum of two elementary components and we give the exact expressions for these components. Lasing of InP/AlInAs quantum dots in AlInAs microdisk cavity
AlInAs microdisk cavities having quality factor Q ~ 15 000 were fabricated from lattice-matched InP/AlInAs (interface/aggregation) quantum dot (QD) structures using wet chemical etching. The QD emission coupled to whispering gallery modes was observed at spectral range 920 - 1000 nm at temperatures of 10 - 160 K. The laser generation with threshold power density of 50 W/cm2 at T = 10 K was observed under optical pumping. It was found that the spontaneous emission coupling factor β equals 0.23 for these microdisks. The low temperature lasing operation and the small coupling factors observed suggest the existence of small QDs formed at the InP/InAlAs interface as the main active elements
Changing climate both increases and decreases European river floods
Climate change has led to concerns about increasing river floods resulting from the greater water-holding capacity of a warmer atmosphere1. These concerns are reinforced by evidence of increasing economic losses associated with flooding in many parts of the world, including Europe2. Any changes in river floods would have lasting implications for the design of flood protection measures and flood risk zoning. However, existing studies have been unable to identify a consistent continental-scale climatic-change signal in flood discharge observations in Europe3, because of the limited spatial coverage and number of hydrometric stations. Here we demonstrate clear regional patterns of both increases and decreases in observed river flood discharges in the past five decades in Europe, which are manifestations of a changing climate. Our results\u2014arising from the most complete database of European flooding so far\u2014suggest that: increasing autumn and winter rainfall has resulted in increasing floods in northwestern Europe; decreasing precipitation and increasing evaporation have led to decreasing floods in medium and large catchments in southern Europe; and decreasing snow cover and snowmelt, resulting from warmer temperatures, have led to decreasing floods in eastern Europe. Regional flood discharge trends in Europe range from an increase of about 11 per cent per decade to a decrease of 23 per cent. Notwithstanding the spatial and temporal heterogeneity of the observational record, the flood changes identified here are broadly consistent with climate model projections for the next century4,5, suggesting that climate-driven changes are already happening and supporting calls for the consideration of climate change in flood risk management
Search for a W' boson decaying to a bottom quark and a top quark in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV
Results are presented from a search for a W' boson using a dataset
corresponding to 5.0 inverse femtobarns of integrated luminosity collected
during 2011 by the CMS experiment at the LHC in pp collisions at sqrt(s)=7 TeV.
The W' boson is modeled as a heavy W boson, but different scenarios for the
couplings to fermions are considered, involving both left-handed and
right-handed chiral projections of the fermions, as well as an arbitrary
mixture of the two. The search is performed in the decay channel W' to t b,
leading to a final state signature with a single lepton (e, mu), missing
transverse energy, and jets, at least one of which is tagged as a b-jet. A W'
boson that couples to fermions with the same coupling constant as the W, but to
the right-handed rather than left-handed chiral projections, is excluded for
masses below 1.85 TeV at the 95% confidence level. For the first time using LHC
data, constraints on the W' gauge coupling for a set of left- and right-handed
coupling combinations have been placed. These results represent a significant

Search for the standard model Higgs boson decaying into two photons in pp collisions at sqrt(s)=7 TeV
A search for a Higgs boson decaying into two photons is described. The
analysis is performed using a dataset recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC
from pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV, which corresponds to an
integrated luminosity of 4.8 inverse femtobarns. Limits are set on the cross
section of the standard model Higgs boson decaying to two photons. The expected
exclusion limit at 95% confidence level is between 1.4 and 2.4 times the
standard model cross section in the mass range between 110 and 150 GeV. The
analysis of the data excludes, at 95% confidence level, the standard model
Higgs boson decaying into two photons in the mass range 128 to 132 GeV. The
largest excess of events above the expected standard model background is
observed for a Higgs boson mass hypothesis of 124 GeV with a local significance
of 3.1 sigma. The global significance of observing an excess with a local
significance greater than 3.1 sigma anywhere in the search range 110-150 GeV is
estimated to be 1.8 sigma. More data are required to ascertain the origin of

Measurement of the Lambda(b) cross section and the anti-Lambda(b) to Lambda(b) ratio with Lambda(b) to J/Psi Lambda decays in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV
The Lambda(b) differential production cross section and the cross section
ratio anti-Lambda(b)/Lambda(b) are measured as functions of transverse momentum
pt(Lambda(b)) and rapidity abs(y(Lambda(b))) in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7
TeV using data collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC. The measurements are
based on Lambda(b) decays reconstructed in the exclusive final state J/Psi
Lambda, with the subsequent decays J/Psi to an opposite-sign muon pair and
Lambda to proton pion, using a data sample corresponding to an integrated
luminosity of 1.9 inverse femtobarns. The product of the cross section times
the branching ratio for Lambda(b) to J/Psi Lambda versus pt(Lambda(b)) falls
faster than that of b mesons. The measured value of the cross section times the
branching ratio for pt(Lambda(b)) > 10 GeV and abs(y(Lambda(b))) < 2.0 is 1.06
+/- 0.06 +/- 0.12 nb, and the integrated cross section ratio for
anti-Lambda(b)/Lambda(b) is 1.02 +/- 0.07 +/- 0.09, where the uncertainties are

Search for new physics in events with opposite-sign leptons, jets, and missing transverse energy in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV
A search is presented for physics beyond the standard model (BSM) in final
states with a pair of opposite-sign isolated leptons accompanied by jets and
missing transverse energy. The search uses LHC data recorded at a
center-of-mass energy sqrt(s) = 7 TeV with the CMS detector, corresponding to
an integrated luminosity of approximately 5 inverse femtobarns. Two
complementary search strategies are employed. The first probes models with a
specific dilepton production mechanism that leads to a characteristic kinematic
edge in the dilepton mass distribution. The second strategy probes models of
dilepton production with heavy, colored objects that decay to final states
including invisible particles, leading to very large hadronic activity and
missing transverse energy. No evidence for an event yield in excess of the
standard model expectations is found. Upper limits on the BSM contributions to
the signal regions are deduced from the results, which are used to exclude a
region of the parameter space of the constrained minimal supersymmetric
extension of the standard model. Additional information related to detector
efficiencies and response is provided to allow testing specific models of BSM
