    Fractional discrete-time signal processing: scale conversion and linear prediction

    Nonlinear Dynamics, Vol. 29A generalisation of the linear prediction for fractional steps is reviewed, widening well-known concepts and results. This prediction is used to derive a causal interpolation algorithm. A reconstruction algorithm for the situation where averages are observed is also presented. Scale conversion of discrete-time signals is studied taking as base the fractional discrete-time system theory. Some simulation results to illustrate the behaviour of the algorithms will be presented. A new algorithm for performing the zoom transform is also described

    Amphibians Of Varzea Environments And Floating Meadows Of The Oxbow Lakes Of The Middle Purus River, Amazonas, Brazil

    Despite the historical knowledge on amphibians of the Purus River basin, basic information on assemblages is fragmented, with gaps in knowledge existing at various scales, which limits conservation strategies. This study provides information on the composition, richness and abundance of the amphibian fauna in varzea environments and floating meadows of the oxbow lakes of the Middle Purus River between the Boca do Acre and Pauin´ı municipalities, Amazonas, Brazil. We sampled six oxbow lakes using forty-seven 200-meter transects, distributed among the “floating meadows,” “high varzea” and “low varzea,” from April to January 2014. We recorded 59 species, with the family Hylidae being predominant. This amphibian fauna represents approximately 19% of the species known for the Amazon, 28% for Amazonas State and 45% of the species recorded so far in the Purus River, increasing the richness of the basin to 132 species. Eight species were considered rare, and 29 are endemic to the Amazon. This study adds to the knowledge on the amphibian species of the Amazonian lowlands, including the expansion of known distributions, as well as increases the knowledge of several species that are locally rare, endemic and/or that are data deficient regarding distribution and ecology. © 2016, Universidade Estadual de Campinas UNICAMP.     Life cycle cost, as a tool for decision making on concrete infrastructures

    The use of Life Cycle Cost (LCC) tools in civil engineering is increasing, due to the need of infrastructure owners and operators to guarantee their assets maximum performance with an optimized budget. By considering these tools it will be possible to manage assets along their lifetime in a more sustainable and efficient way. Due to this reason, it was recently constituted a Task Group on fib to deal with existing LCC tools for concrete infrastructures. This paper gives an introduction to these tools, with a special emphasis to the added-value of LCC, and to the main contents of the fib TG 8.4 state-of-art technical report.     This work is a review of the last results of research on the Scalar Field Dark Matter model of the Universe at cosmological and at galactic level. We present the complete solution to the scalar field cosmological scenario in which the dark matter is modeled by a scalar field Φ\Phi with the scalar potential V(Φ)=V0(cosh(λκ0Φ)1)V(\Phi)=V_{0}(cosh {(\lambda \sqrt{\kappa_{0}}\Phi)}-1) and the dark energy is modeled by a scalar field Ψ\Psi, endowed with the scalar potential V~(Ψ)=V0~(sinh(ακ0Ψ))β\tilde{V}(\Psi)= \tilde{V_{0}}(\sinh{(\alpha \sqrt{\kappa_{0}}\Psi)})^{\beta}, which together compose the 95% of the total matter energy in the Universe.     A Further Analysis of a Cosmological Model of Quintessence and Scalar Dark Matter

    We present the complete solution to a 95% scalar field cosmological model in which the dark matter is modeled by a scalar field Φ\Phi with the scalar potential V(Φ)=Vo[cosh(λκoΦ)1]V(\Phi)=V_{o}[ \cosh {(\lambda \sqrt{\kappa_{o}}\Phi)}-1] and the dark energy is modeled by a scalar field Ψ\Psi, endowed with the scalar potential V~(Ψ)=Vo~[sinh(ακoΨ)]β\tilde{V}(\Psi)=\tilde{V_{o}}[ \sinh {(\alpha \sqrt{\kappa_{o}}\Psi)}] ^{\beta}. This model has only two free parameters, λ\lambda and the equation of state ωΨ\omega_{\Psi}. With these potentials, the fine tuning and the cosmic coincidence problems are ameliorated for both dark matter and dark energy and the models agrees with astronomical observations. For the scalar dark matter, we clarify the meaning of a scalar Jeans lenght and then the model predicts a suppression of the Mass Power Spectrum for small scales having a wave number k>kmin,Φk > k_{min,\Phi}, where kmin,Φ4.5hMpc1k_{min,\Phi} \simeq 4.5 h {\rm Mpc}^{-1} for λ20.28\lambda \simeq 20.28. This last fact could help to explain the dearth of dwarf galaxies and the smoothness of galaxy core halos. From this, all parameters of the scalar dark matter potential are completely determined. The dark matter consists of an ultra-light particle, whose mass is mΦ1.1×1023eVm_{\Phi} \simeq 1.1\times 10^{-23} {\rm eV} and all the success of the standard cold dark matter model is recovered. This implies that a scalar field could also be a good candidate as the dark matter of the Universe.Comment: 11 pages REVTeX, 6 eps color figures.     Modeling galactic halos with predominantly quintessential matter

    This paper discusses a new model for galactic dark matter by combining an anisotropic pressure field corresponding to normal matter and a quintessence dark energy field having a characteristic parameter ωq\omega_q such that 1<ωq<13-1<\omega_q< -\frac{1}{3}. Stable stellar orbits together with an attractive gravity exist only if ωq\omega_q is extremely close to 13-\frac{1}{3}, a result consistent with the special case studied by Guzman et al. (2003). Less exceptional forms of quintessence dark energy do not yield the desired stable orbits and are therefore unsuitable for modeling dark matter.Comment: 12 pages, 1 figur

    Galactic rotation curves inspired by a noncommutative-geometry background

    This paper discusses the observed at rotation curves of galaxies in the context of noncommutative geometry. The energy density of such a geometry is diffused throughout a region due to the uncertainty encoded in the coordinate commutator.     Structural signatures of water-soluble organic aerosols in contrasting environments in South America and Western Europe

    This study describes and compares the key structural units present in water-soluble organic carbon (WSOC) fraction of atmospheric aerosols collected in different South American (Colombia – Medellín and Bogotá, Peru – Lima, Argentina – Buenos Aires, and Brazil – Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, and Porto Velho, during moderate (MBB) and intense (IBB) biomass burning) and Western European (Portugal – Aveiro and Lisbon) locations. Proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR) spectroscopy was employed to assess the relative distribution of non-exchangeable proton functional groups in aerosol WSOC of diverse origin, for the first time to the authors’ knowledge in South America. The relative contribution of the proton functional groups was in the order H-C > H–C–C= > H-C-O > Ar-H, except in Porto Velho during MBB, Medellín, Bogotá, and Buenos Aires, for which the relative contribution of H-C-O was higher than that of H-C-C=. The 1H NMR source attribution confirmed differences in aging processes or regional sources between the two geographic regions, allowing the differentiation between urban combustion-related aerosol and biological particles. The aerosol WSOC in Aveiro, Lisbon, and Rio de Janeiro during summer are more oxidized than those from the remaining locations, indicating the predominance of secondary organic aerosols. Fresh emissions, namely of smoke particles, becomes important during winter in Aveiro and São Paulo, and in Porto Velho during IBB. The biosphere is an important source altering the chemical composition of aerosol WSOC in South America locations. The source attribution in Medellín, Bogotá, Buenos Aires, and Lima confirmed the mixed contributions of biological material, secondary formation, as well as urban and biomass burning emissions. Overall, the information and knowledge acquired in this study provide important diagnostic tools for future studies aiming at understanding the water-soluble organic aerosol problem, their sources and impact at a wider geographic scale.Fil: Duarte, Regina M.B.O..
