    Search for massive, long-lived particles using multitrack displaced vertices or displaced lepton pairs in pp collisions at √s = 8 TeV with the ATLAS detector

    Many extensions of the Standard Model posit the existence of heavy particles with long lifetimes. This article presents the results of a search for events containing at least one long-lived particle that decays at a significant distance from its production point into two leptons or into five or more charged particles. This analysis uses a data sample of proton-proton collisions at √s=8  TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 20.3  fb−1 collected in 2012 by the ATLAS detector operating at the Large Hadron Collider. No events are observed in any of the signal regions, and limits are set on model parameters within supersymmetric scenarios involving R-parity violation, split supersymmetry, and gauge mediation. In some of the search channels, the trigger and search strategy are based only on the decay products of individual long-lived particles, irrespective of the rest of the event. In these cases, the provided limits can easily be reinterpreted in different scenarios

    Gas gain study of a large-size multilayer Micromegas

    The results of the study of a large-size, multilayer Micromegas detector with X-ray source Cd-109 are discussed. The detector consists of 4 layers, each of them is a Micromegas detector with resistive anode and strip-based read-out structure. The gas volume of the chamber is split to 4 parts interconnected in 6 points. Results of the measurements of the gas gain curves and the 1st Townsend coefficient as well as the E_amp/E_drift characteristics are presented and discussed. The detector presented a non-negligible gas leak, affecting the reported results. The influence of the leak on operation of the module is estimated

    FRONTier RADiography is an R&D project to assess the feasibility of digital mammography with Synchrotron Radiation at the ELETTRA Light Source in Trieste. In order to reach an acceptable time duration of the exam, a fast-and low-noise photon counting ASIC has been developed in collaboration with Aurelia Microelettronica, called Frontrad ReadOut SysTem. It is a multichannel counting system, each channel being made of a low-noise charge-sensitive preamplifier optimized for X-lay energy range (10 100 keV), a CR-RC2 shaper. a discriminator and a 16-bit counter. In older to set the discriminator threshold, a set of a global 6-bit DAC and a local (per channel) 3-bit DAC has been implemented within the ASIC. We report on the measurements done with the 8-channel prototype chip and the comparison with the simulation results

    Observation of Higgs boson production in association with a top quark pair at the LHC with the ATLAS detector

    The observation of Higgs boson production in association with a top quark pair (t (t) over barH), based on the analysis of proton-proton collision data at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider, is presented. Using data corresponding to integrated luminosities of up to 79.8 fb(-1), and considering Higgs boson decays into b (b) over bar, WW*, tau(+)tau(-), gamma gamma, and ZZ*, the observed significance is 5.8 standard deviations, compared to an expectation of 4.9 standard deviations. Combined with the t (t) over barH searches using a dataset corresponding to integrated luminosities of 4.5 fb(-1) at 7 TeV and 20.3 fb(-1) at 8 TeV, the observed (expected) significance is 6.3 (5.1) standard deviations. Assuming Standard Model branching fractions, the total t (t) over barH production cross section at 13 TeV is measured to be 670 +/- 90(stat.)(-100)(+110)(syst.) fb, in agreement with the Standard Model prediction.     Search for s-channel single top-quark production in proton-proton collisions at √s=8 TeV with the ATLAS detector

    This Letter presents a search at the LHC for s-channel single top-quark production in proton–proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV. The analyzed data set was recorded by the ATLAS detector and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 20.3 fb−1. Selected events contain one charged lepton, large missing transverse momentum and exactly two b-tagged jets. A multivariate event classifier based on boosted decision trees is developed to discriminate s-channel single top-quark events from the main background contributions. The signal extraction is based on a binned maximum-likelihood fit of the output classifier distribution. The analysis leads to an upper limit on the s -channel single top-quark production cross-section of 14.6 pb at the 95% confidence level. The fit gives a cross-section of σs=5.0±4.3 pb, consistent with the Standard Model expectation
