Public spaces, public words: contextualising pro-localist, site-local, new writing and its roots in a community’s history, culture and people

This thesis which accompanies the public works is a reflective analysis of my creative practice as a playwright, and argues that the plays submitted form a coherent body of work, demonstrating a consistent and meaningful synthesis of predominant themes and practice. In this statement I contend that the originality of the works lie in the exploration and practical application of a localist-focused arts praxis towards new writing and performance. This approach promotes and actively seeks out the use of unorthodox and/or local performance spaces, employs a ‘mixed economy’ of young and professional performers, dramatizes and celebrates local culture, with the aim of creating a theatre that is rooted in a local neighborhood’s social, economic and cultural fabric

Transport Energy Use and Greenhouse Gases in Urban Passenger Transport Systems: A Study of 84 Global Cities

Cities everywhere are concerned about growing automobile dependence. Two of the factors that are increasingly important to consider are the energy and greenhouse implications of automobile dependence in cities. This paper provides a global view of these issues. It examines not only the patterns of automobile dependence, transport energy use and CO2 emissions across a global sample of some 84 cities in nearly all regions of the world, but also some underlying reasons for these patterns. The discussion points to a series of policy implications, which are briefly discussed. The paper commences with a brief description of the methodology, data sources and cities covered by the study. Results are then presented for a wide range of transport and urban form characteristics of cities, summarised by different regions in the world and divided according to high and low income areas. Data covered include urban form and wealth, vehicle ownership, private and public transport infrastructure and usage, public transport service and modal split. A comprehensive set of transport energy use and efficiency data are presented for private and public transport along with the resulting CO2 emissions. All relevant data are set out in tables on the basis of averages for eleven world regions. Some overall conclusions and perspectives are drawn

The role of hydrogen and fuel cells in the global energy system

Hydrogen technologies have experienced cycles of excessive expectations followed by disillusion. Nonetheless, a growing body of evidence suggests these technologies form an attractive option for the deep decarb onisation of global energy systems, and that recent improvements in their cost and performance point towards economic viability as well. This paper is a comprehensive review of the potential role that hydrogen could play in the provision of electricity, h eat, industry, transport and energy storage in a low - carbon energy system, and an assessment of the status of hydrogen in being able to fulfil that potential. The picture that emerges is one of qualified promise: hydrogen is well established in certain nic hes such as forklift trucks, while mainstream applications are now forthcoming. Hydrogen vehicles are available commercially in several countries, and 225,000 fuel cell home heating systems have been sold. This represents a step change from the situation of only five years ago. This review shows that challenges around cost and performance remain, and considerable improvements are still required for hydrogen to become truly competitive. But such competitiveness in the medium - term future no longer seems an unrealistic prospect, which fully justifies the growing interest and policy support for these technologies around the world

From Cockney to Bangra, from the Krays to Stormzy, Alice in Canning Town was performed site-responsively at Canning Town’s inclusive adventure playground, Arc in the Park, in the summer of 2019 and is a celebration of not only one of the best loved fantasies of all time, but a kaleidoscopic and action-packed journey through an East End that survived Hitler’s blitz and reinvented itself as a leading light in multicultural Britain

New play written by James Kenworth, directed by James Martin Charlton, designed by Amy Rose Mitchell, Assistant director Connor Abbott, produced by Nayomi Roshini. 12-18 August, 2019. This is Alice in Wonderland as you’ve never seen before. All the favourite characters are still there, but in new, modern guises. A cockney rabbit, a rave-mad Mad Hatter, a hookah-smoking ex-Bollywood actor, Tweedledee and Tweedledum as hipsters, and a would-be grime artist called MC Turtle. From Cockney to Bangra, from the Krays to Stormzy, Alice in Canning Town is a celebration of not only one of the best loved fantasies of all time, but a kaleidoscopic and action-packed journey through an East End that survived Hitler’s blitz and reinvented itself as a leading light in multicultural Britain. Alice in Canning Town has been reconfigured specially for the East End, and performed site-responsively in Canning Town’s Arc in the Park, an inclusive adventure playground in Canning Town. Arc in the Park is a vibrant and dynamic Adventure Playground, featuring tree houses, swings, trampolines, rope bridges, giant slides, teepees, and as such, is a perfect fit for the playful and surreal world of Alice. Following the critical acclaim of James Kenworth’s When Chaplin Met Gandhi, Revolution Farm, and A Splotch of Red: Keir Hardie in West Ham, three plays which were a unique collaboration between professional theatre artists and young people in Newham, Alice in Canning Town is the fourth in a quad-trilogy that explores the borough’s rich heritage and shows off the talent of its young people. It continues the collaboration between Kenworth and director James Martin Charlton
