TBE vaccination breakthrough cases—Does age matter?
Funding Information: Funding: This study was sponsored by Pfizer Inc. Publisher Copyright: © 2021 by the authors. Licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland.Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) vaccines are highly effective in preventing TBE and vaccine failures (VF) are rare events. In this study, we compared the age distribution of TBE cases and TBE VF in three endemic countries: Sweden, Southern Germany, and Latvia. While the age distribution of TBE cases was similar for those <50 years versus those ≥50 years in all three countries, in Sweden, a higher proportion of VF cases was ≥50 years, whereas most VF cases in Latvia were <50 years of age and more evenly distributed between those <50 years versus those ≥50 in Southern Germany. Here, theoretical explanations were provided, including differences in diagnostic practices, vaccine uptake between age groups, behavioral patterns and underlying medical conditions, as to why VF were generally older in Sweden than the other countries. There is no scientific rationale to give an extra priming dose of TBE vaccine to subjects ≥50 years of age.publishersversionPeer reviewe
Production of medium-mass neutron-rich nuclei in reactions induced by 136Xe projectiles at 1 A GeV on a beryllium target
Production cross sections of medium-mass neutron-rich nuclei obtained in the
fragmentation of 136Xe projectiles at 1 A GeV have been measured with the
FRagment Separator (FRS) at GSI. 125Pd was identified for the first time. The
measured cross sections are compared to 238U fission yields and model
calculations in order to determine the optimum reaction mechanism to extend the
limits of the chart of the nuclides around the r-process waiting point at N=82.Comment: 9 pages, 6 figure
Measurement of the complete nuclide production and kinetic energies of the system 136Xe + hydrogen at 1 GeV per nucleon
We present an extensive overview of production cross sections and kinetic
energies for the complete set of nuclides formed in the spallation of 136Xe by
protons at the incident energy of 1 GeV per nucleon. The measurement was
performed in inverse kinematics at the FRagment Separator (GSI, Darmstadt).
Slightly below the Businaro-Gallone point, 136Xe is the stable nuclide with the
largest neutron excess. The kinematic data and cross sections collected in this
work for the full nuclide production are a general benchmark for modelling the
spallation process in a neutron-rich nuclear system, where fission is
characterised by predominantly mass-asymmetric splits.Comment: 18 pages, 14 figure
Two lectures on color superconductivity
The first lecture provides an introduction to the physics of color
superconductivity in cold dense quark matter. The main color superconducting
phases are briefly described and their properties are listed. The second
lecture covers recent developments in studies of color superconducting phases
in neutral and beta-equilibrated matter. The properties of gapless color
superconducting phases are discussed.Comment: 56 pages, 9 figures. Minor corrections and references added. Lectures

Open charm and charmonium production at relativistic energies
We calculate open charm and charmonium production in reactions at
= 200 GeV within the hadron-string dynamics (HSD) transport approach
employing open charm cross sections from and reactions that are
fitted to results from PYTHIA and scaled in magnitude to the available
experimental data. Charmonium dissociation with nucleons and formed mesons to
open charm ( pairs) is included dynamically. The 'comover'
dissociation cross sections are described by a simple phase-space model
including a single free parameter, i.e. an interaction strength , that
is fitted to the suppression data for collisions at SPS
energies. As a novel feature we implement the backward channels for charmonium
reproduction by channels employing detailed balance. From our
dynamical calculations we find that the charmonium recreation is comparable to
the dissociation by 'comoving' mesons. This leads to the final result that the
total suppression at = 200 GeV as a function of centrality
is slightly less than the suppression seen at SPS energies by the NA50
Collaboration, where the 'comover' dissociation is substantial and the backward
channels play no role. Furthermore, even in case that all directly produced
mesons dissociate immediately (or are not formed as a mesonic state),
a sizeable amount of charmonia is found asymptotically due to the + meson channels in central collisions of at =
200 GeV which, however, is lower than the yield expected from binary
scaling of collisions.Comment: 42 pages, including 14 eps figures, discussions extended and

Transitory Microbial Habitat in the Hyperarid Atacama Desert
Traces of life are nearly ubiquitous on Earth. However, a central unresolved question is whether these traces always indicate an active microbial community or whether, in extreme environments, such as hyperarid deserts, they instead reflect just dormant or dead cells. Although microbial biomass and diversity decrease with increasing aridity in the Atacama Desert, we provide multiple lines of evidence for the presence of an at times metabolically active, microbial community in one of the driest places on Earth. We base this observation on four major lines of evidence: a physico-chemical characterization of the soil habitability after an exceptional rain event, identified biomolecules indicative of potentially active cells [e.g., presence of ATP, phospholipid fatty acids (PLFAs), metabolites, and enzymatic activity], measurements of in situ replication rates of genomes of uncultivated bacteria reconstructed from selected samples, and microbial community patterns specific to soil parameters and depths. We infer that the microbial populations have undergone selection and adaptation in response to their specific soil microenvironment and in particular to the degree of aridity. Collectively, our results highlight that even the hyperarid Atacama Desert can provide a habitable environment for microorganisms that allows them to become metabolically active following an episodic increase in moisture and that once it decreases, so does the activity of the microbiota. These results have implications for the prospect of life on other planets such as Mars, which has transitioned from an earlier wetter environment to today's extreme hyperaridity. Measurement of the cross-section and charge asymmetry of bosons produced in proton-proton collisions at TeV with the ATLAS detector
This paper presents measurements of the and cross-sections and the associated charge asymmetry as a
function of the absolute pseudorapidity of the decay muon. The data were
collected in proton--proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV with
the ATLAS experiment at the LHC and correspond to a total integrated luminosity
of 20.2~\mbox{fb^{-1}}. The precision of the cross-section measurements
varies between 0.8% to 1.5% as a function of the pseudorapidity, excluding the
1.9% uncertainty on the integrated luminosity. The charge asymmetry is measured
with an uncertainty between 0.002 and 0.003. The results are compared with
predictions based on next-to-next-to-leading-order calculations with various
parton distribution functions and have the sensitivity to discriminate between
them.Comment: 38 pages in total, author list starting page 22, 5 figures, 4 tables,

Search for chargino-neutralino production with mass splittings near the electroweak scale in three-lepton final states in √s=13 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector
A search for supersymmetry through the pair production of electroweakinos with mass splittings near the electroweak scale and decaying via on-shell W and Z bosons is presented for a three-lepton final state. The analyzed proton-proton collision data taken at a center-of-mass energy of √s=13 TeV were collected between 2015 and 2018 by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb−1. A search, emulating the recursive jigsaw reconstruction technique with easily reproducible laboratory-frame variables, is performed. The two excesses observed in the 2015–2016 data recursive jigsaw analysis in the low-mass three-lepton phase space are reproduced. Results with the full data set are in agreement with the Standard Model expectations. They are interpreted to set exclusion limits at the 95% confidence level on simplified models of chargino-neutralino pair production for masses up to 345 GeV
