Far upstream element binding protein 1 binds the internal ribosomal entry site of enterovirus 71 and enhances viral translation and viral growth

Enterovirus 71 (EV71) is associated with severe neurological disorders in children, and has been implicated as the infectious agent in several large-scale outbreaks with mortalities. Upon infection, the viral RNA is translated in a cap-independent manner to yield a large polyprotein precursor. This mechanism relies on the presence of an internal ribosome entry site (IRES) element within the 5′-untranslated region. Virus–host interactions in EV71-infected cells are crucial in assisting this process. We identified a novel positive IRES trans-acting factor, far upstream element binding protein 1 (FBP1). Using binding assays, we mapped the RNA determinants within the EV71 IRES responsible for FBP1 binding and mapped the protein domains involved in this interaction. We also demonstrated that during EV71 infection, the nuclear protein FBP1 is enriched in cytoplasm where viral replication occurs. Moreover, we showed that FBP1 acts as a positive regulator of EV71 replication by competing with negative ITAF for EV71 IRES binding. These new findings may provide a route to new anti-viral therapy

Measurement of charged particle spectra in minimum-bias events from proton-proton collisions at root s =13 TeV

Pseudorapidity, transverse momentum, and multiplicity distributions are measured in the pseudorapidity range vertical bar eta vertical bar 0.5 GeV in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of root s = 13 TeV. Measurements are presented in three different event categories. The most inclusive of the categories corresponds to an inelastic pp data set, while the other two categories are exclusive subsets of the inelastic sample that are either enhanced or depleted in single diffractive dissociation events. The measurements are compared to predictions from Monte Carlo event generators used to describe high-energy hadronic interactions in collider and cosmic-ray physics.Peer reviewe

Measurement of the γγ*→π0 transition form factor

    We study the reaction e + e − → e + e − π 0 in the single tag mode and measure the differential cross section d σ / d Q 2 and the γ γ ∗ → π 0 transition form factor in the momentum transfer range from 4 to 40     GeV 2 . At Q 2 > 10     GeV 2 the measured form factor exceeds the asymptotic limit predicted by perturbative QCD. The analysis is based on 442     fb − 1 of integrated luminosity collected at PEP-II with the BABAR detector at e + e − center-of-mass energies near 10.6 GeV

Alkenyl (CHCH2 or CFCF2) or alkynyl (CCPh) derivatives of trimethyltin are shown to be superior to lithium or magnesium reagents for the synthesis of corresponding mono-organoplatinum(II) species by metathesis (L = SnMe3R +cis-[PtCl2L2]→trans-[PtRClL2]+ SnMe3Cl tertiary phosphine). The reactivity order for SnMe3R is R = CCPh > CFCF2 > CHCH2. This order is also found for oxidative addition of SnMe3R to Pt0 to give cis-[PtRL2(SnMe3)]. When the latter complex (R = CHCH2) reacts with X2 or MeX further oxidative addition occurs exclusively at the platinum centre. Aromatic isonitriles (R′NC)co-ordinate to the platinum and give insertion products trans-[Pt{C(CHCH2)= NR′}ClL2] on heating or carbene complexes with NBunH2. The alkynyl trans-[Pt(CCPh)ClL2] also forms 1 :1 adducts with R′NC and carbene complexes therefrom, but no insertion products. Spectroscopic data for the new complexes are presented
