The stability of Killing-Cauchy horizons in colliding plane wave space-times
It is confirmed rigorously that the Killing-Cauchy horizons, which sometimes
occur in space-times representing the collision and subsequent interaction of
plane gravitational waves in a Minkowski background, are unstable with respect
to bounded perturbations of the initial waves, at least for the case in which

Nuclear Octupole Correlations and the Enhancement of Atomic Time-Reversal Violation
We examine the time-reversal-violating nuclear ``Schiff moment'' that induces
electric dipole moments in atoms. After presenting a self-contained derivation
of the form of the Schiff operator, we show that the distribution of Schiff
strength, an important ingredient in the ground-state Schiff moment, is very
different from the electric-dipole-strength distribution, with the Schiff
moment receiving no strength from the giant dipole resonance in the
Goldhaber-Teller model. We then present shell-model calculations in light
nuclei that confirm the negligible role of the dipole resonance and show the
Schiff strength to be strongly correlated with low-lying octupole strength.
Next, we turn to heavy nuclei, examining recent arguments for the strong
enhancement of Schiff moments in octupole-deformed nuclei over that of 199Hg,
for example. We concur that there is a significant enhancement while pointing
to effects neglected in previous work (both in the octupole-deformed nuclides
and 199Hg) that may reduce it somewhat, and emphasizing the need for
microscopic calculations to resolve the issue. Finally, we show that static
octupole deformation is not essential for the development of collective Schiff
moments; nuclei with strong octupole vibrations have them as well, and some

Invariance of Charge of Laughlin Quasiparticles
A Quantum Antidot electrometer has been used in the first direct observation
of the fractionally quantized electric charge. In this paper we report
experiments performed on the integer i = 1, 2 and fractional f = 1/3 quantum
Hall plateaus extending over a filling factor range of at least 27%. We find
the charge of the Laughlin quasiparticles to be invariantly e/3, with standard
deviation of 1.2% and absolute accuracy of 4%, independent of filling,

The detection of Gravitational Waves
This chapter is concerned with the question: how do gravitational waves (GWs)
interact with their detectors? It is intended to be a theory review of the
fundamental concepts involved in interferometric and acoustic (Weber bar) GW
antennas. In particular, the type of signal the GW deposits in the detector in
each case will be assessed, as well as its intensity and deconvolution. Brief
reference will also be made to detector sensitivity characterisation, including

Model Analysis of Time Reversal Symmetry Test in the Caltech Fe-57 Gamma-Transition Experiment
The CALTECH gamma-transition experiment testing time reversal symmetry via
the E2/M1 mulipole mixing ratio of the 122 keV gamma-line in Fe-57 has already
been performed in 1977. Extending an earlier analysis in terms of an effective
one-body potential, this experiment is now analyzed in terms of effective one
boson exchange T-odd P-even nucleon nucleon potentials. Within the model space
considered for the Fe-57 nucleus no contribution from isovector rho-type
exchange is possible. The bound on the coupling strength phi_A from effective
short range axial-vector type exchange induced by the experimental bound on
sin(eta) leads to phi_A < 10^{-2}.Comment: 5 pages, RevTex 3.
Effects of T- and P-odd weak nucleon interaction in nuclei: renormalizations due to residual strong interaction, matrix elements between compound states and their correlations with P-violating matrix elements
Manifestations of P-,T-odd weak interaction between nucleons in nucleus are
considered. Renormalization of this interaction due to residual strong
interaction is studied. Mean squared matrix elements of P-,T-odd weak
interaction between compound states are calculated. Correlators between
P-,T-odd and P-odd, T-even weak interaction matrix elements between compound

The 6-GHz methanol multibeam maser catalogue - I. Galactic Centre region, longitudes 345? to 6?
We have conducted a Galactic plane survey of methanol masers at 6668 MHz using a sevenbeam receiver on the Parkes telescope. Here we present results from the first part, which
provides sensitive unbiased coverage of a large region around the Galactic Centre. Details are
given for 183 methanol maser sites in the longitude range 345◦ through the Galactic Centre to
6◦. Within 6◦ of the Galactic Centre, we found 88 maser sites, of which more than half (48)
are new discoveries. The masers are confined to a narrow Galactic latitude range, indicative
of many sources at the Galactic Centre distance and beyond, and confined to a thin disc
population; there is no high-latitude population that might be ascribed to the Galactic bulge.
Within 2◦ of the Galactic Centre the maser velocities all lie between −60 and +77 km s−1,
a range much smaller than the 540 km s−1 range observed in CO. Elsewhere, the maser with
highest positive velocity (+107 km s−1) occurs, surprisingly, near longitude 355◦ and is probably attributable to the Galactic bar. The maser with the most negative velocity (−127 km s−1)
is near longitude 346◦, within the longitude–velocity locus of the near side of the ‘3-kpc arm’.
It has the most extreme velocity of a clear population of masers associated with the near and
far sides of the 3-kpc arm. Closer to the Galactic Centre the maser space density is generally
low, except within 0.25 kpc of the Galactic Centre itself, the ‘Galactic Centre zone’, where
it is 50 times higher, which is hinted at by the longitude distribution, and confirmed by the

Search for direct production of charginos and neutralinos in events with three leptons and missing transverse momentum in √s = 7 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector
A search for the direct production of charginos and neutralinos in final states with three electrons or muons and missing transverse momentum is presented. The analysis is based on 4.7 fb−1 of proton–proton collision data delivered by the Large Hadron Collider and recorded with the ATLAS detector. Observations are consistent with Standard Model expectations in three signal regions that are either depleted or enriched in Z-boson decays. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are set in R-parity conserving phenomenological minimal supersymmetric models and in simplified models, significantly extending previous results
Jet size dependence of single jet suppression in lead-lead collisions at sqrt(s(NN)) = 2.76 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the LHC
Measurements of inclusive jet suppression in heavy ion collisions at the LHC
provide direct sensitivity to the physics of jet quenching. In a sample of
lead-lead collisions at sqrt(s) = 2.76 TeV corresponding to an integrated
luminosity of approximately 7 inverse microbarns, ATLAS has measured jets with
a calorimeter over the pseudorapidity interval |eta| < 2.1 and over the
transverse momentum range 38 < pT < 210 GeV. Jets were reconstructed using the
anti-kt algorithm with values for the distance parameter that determines the
nominal jet radius of R = 0.2, 0.3, 0.4 and 0.5. The centrality dependence of
the jet yield is characterized by the jet "central-to-peripheral ratio," Rcp.
Jet production is found to be suppressed by approximately a factor of two in
the 10% most central collisions relative to peripheral collisions. Rcp varies
smoothly with centrality as characterized by the number of participating
nucleons. The observed suppression is only weakly dependent on jet radius and
transverse momentum. These results provide the first direct measurement of
inclusive jet suppression in heavy ion collisions and complement previous
measurements of dijet transverse energy imbalance at the LHC.Comment: 15 pages plus author list (30 pages total), 8 figures, 2 tables,
