    Comparision of the frying performance of olive oil and palm superolein

    Deep-fat frying is an important method of food preparation in wich foods are immersed in hot oil. Repeated use of frying oils is a common practice and in the presence of atmospheric oxygen it produces various undesiderable reactions in used oils. Stable frying oils usually required low linolenic acid (LnA < 3%). The aim of this study was to establish the behaviour of palm superolein (PSO) (OA 45%, LA 12.5%, LnA 0.2%) and olive oil (OO) during repeated, discontinous deep frying of French fries. The behaviour of the oils under controlled heating conditions was also studied by maintaining all of the process variables the same as those in deep frying except that there was no food in the oil. The PSO selected to be tested in this study may represent an alternative to OO as a frying medium. Although PSO presented a faster increase in some oxidation indices, such as free acid and total polar compounds, for other indicators, PSO showed better behaviour than OO (less formation of C8:0 and lower peroxide value)

    Ultraviolet Observations of Comet 96/P Machholz at Perihelion

    Ultraviolet spectra of Comet 96/P Machholz were obtained during its 2002 perihelion with the UltraViolet Coronagraph Spectrometer instrument on board the SOHO satellite. Emission from H i, C ii, C iii, and O i is detected near the nucleus. The outgassing rate is in line with the value extrapolated from rates at larger distances from the Sun, and abundances of C and O are estimated. Reconstructed images show a nearly spherical cloud of H i Lyα emission and an ion tail seen in C iii. Radiation pressure on the hydrogen atoms produces a modest distortion of the shape of the Lyα cloud as seen from SOHO and Doppler shifts up to 30 km s-1 in the outer parts of the cloud. We estimate a ratio of C to H2O similar to what is observed in other comets, so low carbon abundance does not account for the anomalously low C2 and C3 ratios to NH2 observed at optical wavelengths

    The Need for a Specific Risk Prediction System in Native Valve Infective Endocarditis Surgery

    The need for a specific risk score system for infective endocarditis (IE) surgery has been previously claimed. In a single-center pilot study, preliminary to future multicentric development and validation, bivariate and multivariate (logistic regression) analysis of early postoperative mortality predictors in 440 native valve IE patients were performed. Mathematical procedures assigned scores to the independent predictors emerged (AUC of the ROC curve: 0.88). Overall mortality was 9.1%. Six predictors were identified and assigned scores, including age (5–13 points), renal failure (5), NYHA class IV (9), critical preoperative state (11), lack of preoperative attainment of blood culture negativity (5), perivalvular involvement (5). Four risk classes were drawn ranging from “very low risk” (≤5 points, mean predicted mortality 1%), and to “very high risk” (≥20 points, 43% mortality). IE-specific risk stratification models are both needed, as disease-specific factors (e.g., cultures, abscess), beside the generic ones (e.g., age, renal impairment) affect mortality, and feasible

    Abstract Background The clinical impact of the positivity of the Deauville scale (DS) of positron emission tomography (PET) performed at the end of doxorubicin, bleomycin, vinblastine and dacarbazine (ABVD) in patients with advanced Hodgkin lymphoma (HL), in terms of providing rationale to shift poor responders onto a more intensive regimen, remain to be validated by histopathology. Patients and methods This prospective trial involved patients with stage IIB/IV HL who after six ABVD cycles underwent PET (PET6) and core-needle cutting biopsy (CNCB) of 2-deoxy-2[F-18] fluoro- d -glucose (FDG)-avid lymph nodes. Patients received high-dose chemotherapy/autologous haematopoietic stem cell rescue (HDCT/AHSCR) if CNCB was positive for HL, alternatively, if CNCB or PET was negative, received observation or consolidation radiotherapy (cRT) on residual nodal masses, as initially planned. The end-point was 5-year progression-free survival (PFS). Results In all, 43 of the 169 (25%) evaluable patients were PET6 positive (DS 4, 32; DS 5, 11). Among them, histology showed malignancy (HL) in 100% of DS 5 scores and in 12.5% of DS 4 scores. Fifteen patients with positive biopsy received HDCT/AHSCR, whereas 28 patients with negative biopsy, as well as 126 patients with negative PET6, continued the original plan (cRT, 78 patients; observation, 76 patients). The 5-year PFS in the negative PET6 group, negative biopsy group and positive biopsy group was 95.4%, 100% and 52.5%, respectively. Conclusion DS positivity of end-of-ABVD PET in advanced HL carried a certain number of CNCB-proven non-malignant FDG-uptakes. The DS 4 scores which were found to have negative histology appeared to benefit from continuing the original non-intensive therapeutic plane as indicated by the successful outcome in more than 95% of them by obtaining similar 5-year PFS to the PET6-negative group. By contrast, the DS 5 score had consistently positive histology and was associated with unsuccessful conventional therapy, promptly requiring treatment intensification or innovative therapeutic approaches

    Germinal BRCA1-2 pathogenic variants (gBRCA1-2pv) and pancreatic cancer: epidemiology of an Italian patient cohort

    Objective: Germline BRCA1-2 pathogenic variants (gBRCApv) increase the risk of pancreatic cancer and predict for response to platinating agents and poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase inhibitors. Data on worldwide gBRCApv incidence among pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) patients are sparse and describe a remarkable geographic heterogeneity. The aim of this study is to analyze the epidemiology of gBRCApv in Italian patients. Materials and methods: Patients of any age with pancreatic adenocarcinoma, screened within 3 months from diagnosis for gBRCApv in Italian oncologic centers systematically performing tests without any selection. For the purposes of our analysis, breast, ovarian, pancreas, and prostate cancer in a patient’s family history was considered as potentially BRCAassociated. Patients or disease characteristics were examined using the c2 test or Fisher’s exact test for qualitative variables and the Student's t-test or ManneWhitney test for continuous variables, as appropriate. Results: Between June 2015 and May 2020, 939 patients were tested by 14 Italian centers; 492 (52%) males, median age 62 years (range 28-87), 569 (61%) metastatic, 273 (29%) with a family history of potentially BRCA-associated cancers. gBRCA1-2pv were found in 76 patients (8.1%; 9.1% in metastatic; 6.4% in non-metastatic). The gBRCA2/ gBRCA1 ratio was 5.4 : 1. Patients with gBRCApv were younger compared with wild-type (59 versus 62 years, P ¼ 0.01). The gBRCApv rate was 17.1% among patients &lt;40 years old, 10.4% among patients 41-50 years old, 9.2% among patients 51-60 years old, 6.7% among patients aged 61-70 years, and 6.2% among patients &gt;70 years old (none out of 94 patients &gt;73 years old). gBRCApv frequency in 845 patients &lt;74 years old was 9%. Patients with/without a family history of potentially BRCA-associated tumors had 14%/6% mutations. Conclusion: Based on our findings of a gBRCApv incidence higher than expected in a real-life series of Italian patients with incident PDAC, we recommend screening all PDAC patients &lt;74 years old, regardless of family history and stage, due to the therapeutic implications and cancer risk prevention in patients' relatives.     Measurements of fiducial and differential cross sections for Higgs boson production in the diphoton decay channel at s√=8 TeV with ATLAS

    Measurements of fiducial and differential cross sections are presented for Higgs boson production in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of s√=8 TeV. The analysis is performed in the H → γγ decay channel using 20.3 fb−1 of data recorded by the ATLAS experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. The signal is extracted using a fit to the diphoton invariant mass spectrum assuming that the width of the resonance is much smaller than the experimental resolution. The signal yields are corrected for the effects of detector inefficiency and resolution. The pp → H → γγ fiducial cross section is measured to be 43.2 ±9.4(stat.) − 2.9 + 3.2 (syst.) ±1.2(lumi)fb for a Higgs boson of mass 125.4GeV decaying to two isolated photons that have transverse momentum greater than 35% and 25% of the diphoton invariant mass and each with absolute pseudorapidity less than 2.37. Four additional fiducial cross sections and two cross-section limits are presented in phase space regions that test the theoretical modelling of different Higgs boson production mechanisms, or are sensitive to physics beyond the Standard Model. Differential cross sections are also presented, as a function of variables related to the diphoton kinematics and the jet activity produced in the Higgs boson events. The observed spectra are statistically limited but broadly in line with the theoretical expectations

    Measurement of the production of a W boson in association with a charm quark in pp collisions at √s = 7 TeV with the ATLAS detector

    The production of a W boson in association with a single charm quark is studied using 4.6 fb−1 of pp collision data at s√ = 7 TeV collected with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. In events in which a W boson decays to an electron or muon, the charm quark is tagged either by its semileptonic decay to a muon or by the presence of a charmed meson. The integrated and differential cross sections as a function of the pseudorapidity of the lepton from the W-boson decay are measured. Results are compared to the predictions of next-to-leading-order QCD calculations obtained from various parton distribution function parameterisations. The ratio of the strange-to-down sea-quark distributions is determined to be 0.96+0.26−0.30 at Q 2 = 1.9 GeV2, which supports the hypothesis of an SU(3)-symmetric composition of the light-quark sea. Additionally, the cross-section ratio σ(W + +c¯¯)/σ(W − + c) is compared to the predictions obtained using parton distribution function parameterisations with different assumptions about the s−s¯¯¯ quark asymmetry

    Measurement of χ c1 and χ c2 production with s√ = 7 TeV pp collisions at ATLAS

    The prompt and non-prompt production cross-sections for the χ c1 and χ c2 charmonium states are measured in pp collisions at s√ = 7 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the LHC using 4.5 fb−1 of integrated luminosity. The χ c states are reconstructed through the radiative decay χ c → J/ψγ (with J/ψ → μ + μ −) where photons are reconstructed from γ → e + e − conversions. The production rate of the χ c2 state relative to the χ c1 state is measured for prompt and non-prompt χ c as a function of J/ψ transverse momentum. The prompt χ c cross-sections are combined with existing measurements of prompt J/ψ production to derive the fraction of prompt J/ψ produced in feed-down from χ c decays. The fractions of χ c1 and χ c2 produced in b-hadron decays are also measured
