Nonlocal Yang-Mills
We present a very simple and explicit procedure for nonlocalizing the action
of any theory which can be formulated perturbatively. When the resulting
nonlocal field theory is quantized using the functional formalism --- with unit
measure factor --- its Green's functions are finite to all orders. The
construction also ensures perturbative unitarity to all orders for scalars with
nonderivative interactions, however, decoupling is lost at one loop when vector
and tensor quanta are present. Decoupling can be restored (again, to all
orders) if a suitable measure factor exists. We compute the required measure
factor for pure Yang-Mills at order and then use it to evaluate the
vacuum polarization at one loop. A peculiar feature of our regularization
scheme is that the on-shell tree amplitudes are completely unaffected. This
implies that the nonlocal field theory can be viewed as a highly noncanonical
quantization of the original, local field equations.Comment: 38 pages, figures available upon request. No macro neede

Improved performance robustness of DSP-enabled flexible ROADMs free from optical filters and O-E-O conversions
Utilizing Hilbert-pair-based digital filtering, intensity modulation, and passive optical coupling, digital signal processing (DSP) enabled flexible reconfigurable optical add/drop multiplexers (ROADMs) are reported, which are free from optical filters and optical-electrical-optical (O-E-O) conversions and offer excellent flexibility, color-lessness, gridlessness, contentionlessness, adaptability, and transparency to physical-layer network characteristics. In this paper, the ROADM performance robustness against variations in numerous network design aspects is, for the first time to the best of our knowledge, extensively explored in intensity-modulation- and direct-detection-based optical network nodes. Numerical results show that DSPs not only enable the ROADMs to dynamically and flexibly perform add/drop operations at wavelength, subwavelength, and spectrally overlapped orthogonal subband levels but also considerably improve the ROADM performance robustness against variations in modulation formats, transmission system characteristics/impairments, and terminal equipment configurations
Issues Concerning Loop Corrections to the Primordial Power Spectra
We expound ten principles in an attempt to clarify the debate over infrared
loop corrections to the primordial scalar and tensor power spectra from
inflation. Among other things we note that existing proposals for nonlinear
extensions of the scalar fluctuation field introduce new ultraviolet
divergences which no one understands how to renormalize. Loop corrections and
higher correlators of these putative observables would also be enhanced by
inverse powers of the slow roll parameter . We propose an extension
which should be better behaved.Comment: 36 pages, uses LaTeX2e, version 3 revised for publication with a much

correlator absorbs the one loop infrared divergences from graviton
Looking Beyond Inflationary Cosmology
In spite of the phenomenological successes of the inflationary universe
scenario, the current realizations of inflation making use of scalar fields
lead to serious conceptual problems which are reviewed in this lecture. String
theory may provide an avenue towards addressing these problems. One particular
approach to combining string theory and cosmology is String Gas Cosmology. The
basic principles of this approach are summarized.Comment: invited talk at "Theory Canada 1" (Univ. of British Columbia,

The quasiclassical realms of this quantum universe
The most striking observable feature of our indeterministic quantum universe
is the wide range of time, place, and scale on which the deterministic laws of
classical physics hold to an excellent approximation. This essay describes how
this domain of classical predictability of every day experience emerges from a
quantum theory of the universe's state and dynamics.Comment: 24 pages, revtex4, minor change
The Dynamics of Brane-World Cosmological Models
Brane-world cosmology is motivated by recent developments in string/M-theory
and offers a new perspective on the hierarchy problem. In the brane-world
scenario, our Universe is a four-dimensional subspace or {\em brane} embedded
in a higher-dimensional {\em bulk} spacetime. Ordinary matter fields are
confined to the brane while the gravitational field can also propagate in the
bulk, leading to modifications of Einstein's theory of general relativity at
high energies. In particular, the Randall-Sundrum-type models are
self-consistent and simple and allow for an investigation of the essential
non-linear gravitational dynamics. The governing field equations induced on the
brane differ from the general relativistic equations in that there are nonlocal
effects from the free gravitational field in the bulk, transmitted via the
projection of the bulk Weyl tensor, and the local quadratic energy-momentum
corrections, which are significant in the high-energy regime close to the
initial singularity. In this review we discuss the asymptotic dynamical
evolution of spatially homogeneous brane-world cosmological models containing
both a perfect fluid and a scalar field close to the initial singularity. Using
dynamical systems techniques it is found that, for models with a physically
relevant equation of state, an isotropic singularity is a past-attractor in all
orthogonal spatially homogeneous models (including Bianchi type IX models). In
addition, we describe the dynamics in a class of inhomogeneous brane-world
models, and show that these models also have an isotropic initial singularity.
These results provide support for the conjecture that typically the initial
cosmological singularity is isotropic in brane-world cosmology.Comment: Einstein Centennial Review Article: to appear in CJ
