    Relative performance of four midge-resistant wheat varietal blends in western Canada

    Non-Peer ReviewedOrange wheat blossom midge, Sitodiplosis mosellana (GĂ©hin), causes significant yield losses to spring wheat in western Canada in severe infestations. To mitigate losses, midge-resistant wheat varietal blends, consisting of cultivars carrying the Sm1 midge resistance gene and 10% interspersed midge susceptible refuge, have been made available to farmers. To test their performance relative to conventional midge-susceptible cultivars, four varietal blends were grown during four consecutive years, at eight locations in the provinces of Manitoba Saskatchewan and Alberta, in comparison to four conventional, midge-susceptible cultivars. Midge damage was higher in 2007 and 2010 than in 2008 and 2009. In general, the varietal blends, as a group, yielded more grain than the susceptible cultivars, especially when grown in environments with high midge pressure (5.5 - 35% seed damage). In environments with low midge pressure (0 – 2.6% seed damage), the varietal blend average yield advantage was smaller but still significant, indicating that some of the varietal blends had additional superior attributes, in addition to midge resistance

In severe infestations, this insect may cause significant yield losses to spring wheat. The refuge prevents this resistance to be overcome by the insect.     Clinical and Genetic Association of Serum Ceruloplasmin with Cardiovascular Risk

    Objective—Ceruloplasmin (Cp) is an acute-phase reactant that is increased in inflammatory diseases and in acute coronary syndromes. Cp has recently been shown to possess nitric oxide (NO) oxidase catalytic activity, but its impact on long-term cardiovascular outcomes in stable cardiac patients has not been explored. Methods and Results—We examined serum Cp levels and their relationship with incident major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE; death, myocardial infarction [MI], stroke) over 3-year follow-up in 4177 patients undergoing elective coronary angiography. We also carried out a genome-wide association study to identify the genetic determinants of serum Cp levels and evaluate their relationship to prevalent and incident cardiovascular risk. In our cohort (age 63±11 years, 66% male, 32% history of MI, 31% diabetes mellitus), mean Cp level was 24±6 mg/dL. Serum Cp level was associated with greater risk of MI at 3 years (hazard ratio [quartile 4 versus 1] 2.35, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.79–3.09, P\u3c0.001). After adjustment for traditional risk factors, high-sensitivity C-reactive protein, and creatinine clearance, Cp remained independently predictive of MACE (hazard ratio 1.55, 95% CI 1.10–2.17, P=0.012). A 2-stage genome-wide association study identified a locus on chromosome 3 over the CP gene that was significantly associated with Cp levels (lead single-nucleotide polymorphism rs13072552; P=1.90×10−11). However, this variant, which leads to modestly increased serum Cp levels (≈1.5–2 mg/dL per minor allele copy), was not associated with coronary artery disease or future risk of MACE. Conclusion—In stable cardiac patients, serum Cp provides independent risk prediction of long-term adverse cardiac events. Genetic variants at the CP locus that modestly affect serum Cp levels are not associated with prevalent or incident risk of coronary artery disease in this study population

    International audienceWe study the pure braid groups Pn(RP2)P_n(RP^2) of the real projective plane RP2RP^2, and in particular the possible splitting of the Fadell-Neuwirth short exact sequence 1→Pm(RP2 x1,...,xn→Pn+m(RP2)→p∗Pn(RP2)→11 \to P_m(RP^2 \ {x_1,...,x_n} \to P_{n+m}(RP^2) \stackrel{p_{\ast}}{\to} P_n(RP^2) \to 1, where n≄2n\geq 2 and m≄1m\geq 1, and p∗p_{\ast} is the homomorphism which corresponds geometrically to forgetting the last mm strings. This problem is equivalent to that of the existence of a section for the associated fibration p:Fn+m(RP2)→Fn(RP2)p: F_{n+m}(RP^2) \to F_n(RP^2) of configuration spaces. Van Buskirk proved in 1966 that pp and p∗p_{\ast} admit a section if n=2n=2 and m=1m=1. Our main result in this paper is to prove that there is no section if n≄3n\geq 3. As a corollary, it follows that n=2n=2 and m=1m=1 are the only values for which a section exists. As part of the proof, we derive a presentation of Pn(RP2)P_n(RP^2): this appears to be the first time that such a presentation has been given in the literature

    Measurements of Higgs boson production and couplings in diboson final states with the ATLAS detector at the LHC

    Measurements are presented of production properties and couplings of the recently discovered Higgs boson using the decays into boson pairs, H →γ Îł, H → Z Z∗ →4l and H →W W∗ →lÎœlÎœ. The results are based on the complete pp collision data sample recorded by the ATLAS experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider at centre-of-mass energies of √s = 7 TeV and √s = 8 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of about 25 fb−1. Evidence for Higgs boson production through vector-boson fusion is reported. Results of combined ïŹts probing Higgs boson couplings to fermions and bosons, as well as anomalous contributions to loop-induced production and decay modes, are presented. All measurements are consistent with expectations for the Standard Model Higgs boson

    Standalone vertex ïŹnding in the ATLAS muon spectrometer

    A dedicated reconstruction algorithm to find decay vertices in the ATLAS muon spectrometer is presented. The algorithm searches the region just upstream of or inside the muon spectrometer volume for multi-particle vertices that originate from the decay of particles with long decay paths. The performance of the algorithm is evaluated using both a sample of simulated Higgs boson events, in which the Higgs boson decays to long-lived neutral particles that in turn decay to bbar b final states, and pp collision data at √s = 7 TeV collected with the ATLAS detector at the LHC during 2011

    Measurement of the top quark-pair production cross section with ATLAS in pp collisions at \sqrt{s}=7\TeV

    A measurement of the production cross-section for top quark pairs(\ttbar) in pppp collisions at \sqrt{s}=7 \TeV is presented using data recorded with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Events are selected in two different topologies: single lepton (electron ee or muon Ό\mu) with large missing transverse energy and at least four jets, and dilepton (eeee, ΌΌ\mu\mu or eΌe\mu) with large missing transverse energy and at least two jets. In a data sample of 2.9 pb-1, 37 candidate events are observed in the single-lepton topology and 9 events in the dilepton topology. The corresponding expected backgrounds from non-\ttbar Standard Model processes are estimated using data-driven methods and determined to be 12.2±3.912.2 \pm 3.9 events and 2.5±0.62.5 \pm 0.6 events, respectively. The kinematic properties of the selected events are consistent with SM \ttbar production. The inclusive top quark pair production cross-section is measured to be \sigmattbar=145 \pm 31 ^{+42}_{-27} pb where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic.
