    The Goldberger -- Treiman Relation, gAg_A and gπNNg_{\pi NN} at T0T\neq 0

The Goldberger-Treiman relation is shown to persist in the chiral limit at finite temperatures to order O(T2)O(T^2). The TT dependence of gAg_A turns out to be the same as for FπF_{\pi}, gA(T)=gA(0)(1T2/12F2)g_{A}(T)=g_{A}(0)(1-T^2/12F^2), while gπNNg_{\pi NN} is temperature independent to this order. The baryon octet D{\cal D} and F{\cal F} couplings also behave as FπF_{\pi} if only pions are massless in the pseudoscalar meson octet.Comment: 7p, NSF-ITP-93-145, BUTP-93/27, PUTP-1433, November 199

Small, Dense Quark Stars from Perturbative QCD

As a model for nonideal behavior in the equation of state of QCD at high density, we consider cold quark matter in perturbation theory. To second order in the strong coupling constant, αs\alpha_s, the results depend sensitively on the choice of the renormalization mass scale. Certain choices of this scale correspond to a strongly first order chiral transition, and generate quark stars with maximum masses and radii approximately half that of ordinary neutron stars. At the center of these stars, quarks are essentially massless.Comment: ReVTeX, 5 pages, 3 figure

Thermal rho and sigma mesons from chiral symmetry and unitarity

We study the temperature evolution of the rho and sigma mass and width, using a unitary chiral approach. The one-loop pion-pion scattering amplitude in Chiral Perturbation Theory at finite temperature is unitarized via the Inverse Amplitude Method. Our results predict a clear increase with T of both the rho and sigma widths. The masses decrease slightly for high T, while the rho-pion-pion coupling increases. The rho behavior seems to be favored by experimental results. In the sigma case, it signals chiral symmetry restoration.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures, revtex. References and brief comments added. Dilepton Production at SPS-energy Heavy Ion Collisions

    Get PDF
The production of dileptons is studied within a hadronic transport model. We investigate the sensitivity of the dilepton spectra to the initial configuration of the hadronic phase in a ultrarelativistic heavy ion collision. Possible in medium correction due to the modifications of pions and the pion form factor in a hadronic gas are discussed.Comment: Dedicated to Gerry Brown in honor of the 32nd celebration of his 39th birthday. 31 pages Latex including 13 eps-figures, uses psfig.sty and epsf.st

Nucleon resonances in the fourth resonance region

Nucleon and Δ\Delta resonances in the fourth resonance region are studied in a multichannel partial-wave analysis which includes nearly all available data on pion- and photo-induced reactions off protons. In the high-mass range, above 1850\,MeV, several alternative solutions yield a good description of the data. For these solutions, masses, widths, pole residues and photo-couplings are given. In particular, we find evidence for nucleon resonances with spin-parities JP=1/2+...7/2+J^P=1/2^+...7/2^+. For one set of solutions, there are four resonances forming naturally a spin-quartet of resonances with orbital angular momentum L=2 and spin S=3/2 coupling to J=1/2,...,7/2J=1/2,...,7/2. Just below 1.9\,GeV we find a spin doublet of resonances with JP=1/2J^P=1/2^- and 3/23/2^-. Since a spin partner with JP=5/2J^P=5/2^- is missing at this mass, the two resonances form a spin doublet which must have a symmetric orbital-angular-momentum wave function with L=1. For another set of solutions, the four positive-parity resonances are accompanied by mass-degenerate negative-parity partners -- as suggested by the conjecture of chiral symmetry restoration. The possibility of a JP=1/2+,3/2+J^P=1/2^+, 3/2^+ spin doublet at 1900\,MeV belonging to a 20-plet is discussed.Comment: 16 page
