    Electronic states in semiconductor superlattices and quantum wells

    The aim of this thesis is two-fold. Firstly to show how a complex bandstructure matching technique has been developed which allows detailed investigations to be made of various low dimensional structures. Secondly the method will be used to investigate interesting physical properties of quantum wells and superlattices. Consequently the thesis will begin with an exposition of the matching technique, giving an indication of the numerical methods used for computational calculations. Evidence will then be given, in the form of a comparison between the present work and the experimental and theoretical results to be found in the literature, of the efficacy of the method. A detailed description of results of calculations carried out on the valence band of AlAs/GaAs and AlGaAs/GaAs quantum wells will show how energy levels and wavefunctions have been calculated as well as giving an explanation of hybridisation and anti-crossing effects. In order to extend the method to strained systems it will be shown how strain can be incorporated into the model by simple empirical fits of calculated bulk properties to experiment. This method will be used to model two particular Si/Ge structures: a Ge(_0.25)Si(_0.75)/Si/Ge(_0.25)Si(_0.75) quantum well and a (Si)(_4)(Ge)(_4) superlattice. To allow a better comparison with experiment for the superlattice a description is given of a method for calculating optical matrix elements between superlattice states; and the results of such calculations are discussed

    Lack of evidence for sprouting of Aβ afferents into the superficial laminas of the spinal cord dorsal horn after nerve section

    The central arborizations of large myelinated cutaneous afferents normally extend as far dorsally as the ventral part of lamina II in rat spinal cord. Woolf et al. (1992) reported that after nerve injury some of these afferents sprouted into lamina I and the dorsal part of lamina II, and it has been suggested that this could contribute to allodynia associated with neuropathic pain. Part of the evidence for sprouting was on the basis of the use of cholera toxin B subunit as a selective tracer for A-fibers, and the validity of this approach has recently been questioned; however, sprouting was also reported in experiments involving intra-axonal labeling of chronically axotomized afferents. We have used intra-axonal labeling in the rat to examine central terminals of 58 intact sciatic afferents of presumed cutaneous origin and 38 such afferents axotomized 7-10 weeks previously. Both normal and axotomized populations included axons with hair follicle afferent-like morphology and arbors that entered the ventral half of lamina II; however, none of these extended farther dorsally. We also performed bulk labeling of myelinated afferents by injecting biotinylated dextran into the lumbar dorsal columns bilaterally 8-11 weeks after unilateral sciatic nerve section. We observed that both ipsilateral and contralateral to the sectioned nerve, arbors of axons with hair follicle afferent-like morphology in the sciatic territory extended only as far as the ventral half of lamina II. Therefore these results do not support the hypothesis that Aβ afferents sprout into the superficial laminas after nerve section

    Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Genetic Associations: Mostly False? A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis

    Objective/BackgroundMany associations between abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) and genetic polymorphisms have been reported. It is unclear which are genuine and which may be caused by type 1 errors, biases, and flexible study design. The objectives of the study were to identify associations supported by current evidence and to investigate the effect of study design on reporting associations.MethodsData sources were MEDLINE, Embase, and Web of Science. Reports were dual-reviewed for relevance and inclusion against predefined criteria (studies of genetic polymorphisms and AAA risk). Study characteristics and data were extracted using an agreed tool and reports assessed for quality. Heterogeneity was assessed using I2 and fixed- and random-effects meta-analyses were conducted for variants that were reported at least twice, if any had reported an association. Strength of evidence was assessed using a standard guideline.ResultsSearches identified 467 unique articles, of which 97 were included. Of 97 studies, 63 reported at least one association. Of 92 studies that conducted multiple tests, only 27% corrected their analyses. In total, 263 genes were investigated, and associations were reported in polymorphisms in 87 genes. Associations in CDKN2BAS, SORT1, LRP1, IL6R, MMP3, AGTR1, ACE, and APOA1 were supported by meta-analyses.ConclusionUncorrected multiple testing and flexible study design (particularly testing many inheritance models and subgroups, and failure to check for Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium) contributed to apparently false associations being reported. Heterogeneity, possibly due to the case mix, geographical, temporal, and environmental variation between different studies, was evident. Polymorphisms in nine genes had strong or moderate support on the basis of the literature at this time. Suggestions are made for improving AAA genetics study design and conduct

    Changes in mean sea level around Great Britain over the past 200 years

    We systematically assimilate a wide range of historical sea level data from around the coast of Great Britain, much of it previously unpublished, into a single comprehensive framework. We show that this greatly increased dataset allows the construction of a robust and extended Mean Sea Level curve for Great Britain covering a period of more than two centuries, and confirms that the 19th century trend was much weaker than that in the 20th century and beyond. As well as attempting to maximise the amount of newly recovered sea level observations, we have also recovered the levelling metadata necessary to connect this 19th and early 20th century data with modern records. We adjust this data for known sources of variability and estimate overall uncertainties over the entire period. Data are processed in 36 regional clusters, before recombining to compute national statistics. We investigate the advantages of extending and adjusting the time series on sea level rise trends and low order variability. Confidence limits are improved by better than 60%. The weighted linear trend since 1900 for the fully adjusted data points from all clusters when averaged annually and adjusted for Glacial Isostatic Adjustment is 2.12 mm/year ± 0.02 mm/year (1-sigma). The much lower trend estimated for the 19th Century alone is 0.24 ± 0.12 mm/yr. There is an acceleration of 0.012 mm/yr2 ± 0.003 mm/yr2 in the rate of rise over the period 1813 to 2018. These trends are quite sensitive to the GIA correction used, but their differences and accelerations are not

    Quantum cryptography using balanced homodyne detection

    We report an experimental quantum key distribution that utilizes balanced homodyne detection, instead of photon counting, to detect weak pulses of coherent light. Although our scheme inherently has a finite error rate, it allows high-efficiency detection and quantum state measurement of the transmitted light using only conventional devices at room temperature. When the average photon number was 0.1, an error rate of 0.08 and "effective" quantum efficiency of 0.76 were obtained.Comment: Errors in the sentence citing ref.[20] are correcte

    Gravitational Lensing at Millimeter Wavelengths

    With today's millimeter and submillimeter instruments observers use gravitational lensing mostly as a tool to boost the sensitivity when observing distant objects. This is evident through the dominance of gravitationally lensed objects among those detected in CO rotational lines at z>1. It is also evident in the use of lensing magnification by galaxy clusters in order to reach faint submm/mm continuum sources. There are, however, a few cases where millimeter lines have been directly involved in understanding lensing configurations. Future mm/submm instruments, such as the ALMA interferometer, will have both the sensitivity and the angular resolution to allow detailed observations of gravitational lenses. The almost constant sensitivity to dust emission over the redshift range z=1-10 means that the likelihood for strong lensing of dust continuum sources is much higher than for optically selected sources. A large number of new strong lenses are therefore likely to be discovered with ALMA, allowing a direct assessment of cosmological parameters through lens statistics. Combined with an angular resolution <0.1", ALMA will also be efficient for probing the gravitational potential of galaxy clusters, where we will be able to study both the sources and the lenses themselves, free of obscuration and extinction corrections, derive rotation curves for the lenses, their orientation and, thus, greatly constrain lens models.Comment: 69 pages, Review on quasar lensing.     BCR-ABL1 genomic DNA PCR response kinetics during first-line imatinib treatment of chronic myeloid leukemia

    Accurate quantification of minimal residual disease during treatment of chronic myeloid leukaemia guides clinical decisions. The conventional minimal residual disease method, RQ-PCR for BCR-ABL1 mRNA, reflects a composite of the number of circulating leukemic cells and the BCR-ABL1 transcripts per cell. BCR-ABL1 genomic DNA only reflects leukemic cell number. We used both methods in parallel to determine the relative contribution of the leukemic cell number to molecular response. BCR-ABL1 DNA PCR and RQ-PCR were monitored up to 24 months in 516 paired samples from 59 newly-diagnosed patients treated with first-line imatinib in the TIDEL-II study. In the first 3 months of treatment BCR-ABL1 mRNA values declined more rapidly than DNA. By 6 months the two measures aligned closely. The expression of BCR-ABL1 mRNA was normalized to cell number to generate an expression ratio. The expression of e13a2 BCR-ABL1 was lower than that of e14a2 transcripts at multiple time points during treatment. BCR-ABL1 DNA was quantifiable in 48% of samples with undetectable BCR-ABL1 mRNA, resulting in minimal residual disease being quantifiable for an additional 5-18 months (median 12 months). These parallel studies show for the first time that the rapid decline in BCR-ABL1 mRNA over the first 3 months of treatment is due to a reduction in both cell number and transcript level per cell, whereas beyond 3 months falling levels of BCR-ABL1 mRNA are predominantly due to depletion of leukaemic cells.Ilaria S.     Search for direct production of charginos and neutralinos in events with three leptons and missing transverse momentum in √s = 7 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector

    A search for the direct production of charginos and neutralinos in final states with three electrons or muons and missing transverse momentum is presented. The analysis is based on 4.7 fb−1 of proton–proton collision data delivered by the Large Hadron Collider and recorded with the ATLAS detector. Observations are consistent with Standard Model expectations in three signal regions that are either depleted or enriched in Z-boson decays. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are set in R-parity conserving phenomenological minimal supersymmetric models and in simplified models, significantly extending previous results

    Jet size dependence of single jet suppression in lead-lead collisions at sqrt(s(NN)) = 2.76 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the LHC

    Measurements of inclusive jet suppression in heavy ion collisions at the LHC provide direct sensitivity to the physics of jet quenching. In a sample of lead-lead collisions at sqrt(s) = 2.76 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of approximately 7 inverse microbarns, ATLAS has measured jets with a calorimeter over the pseudorapidity interval |eta| < 2.1 and over the transverse momentum range 38 < pT < 210 GeV. Jets were reconstructed using the anti-kt algorithm with values for the distance parameter that determines the nominal jet radius of R = 0.2, 0.3, 0.4 and 0.5. The centrality dependence of the jet yield is characterized by the jet "central-to-peripheral ratio," Rcp. Jet production is found to be suppressed by approximately a factor of two in the 10% most central collisions relative to peripheral collisions. Rcp varies smoothly with centrality as characterized by the number of participating nucleons. The observed suppression is only weakly dependent on jet radius and transverse momentum. These results provide the first direct measurement of inclusive jet suppression in heavy ion collisions and complement previous measurements of dijet transverse energy imbalance at the LHC.Comment: 15 pages plus author list (30 pages total), 8 figures, 2 tables, submitted to Physics Letters B.     In-beam Îł -ray spectroscopy studies of medium-spin states in the odd-odd nucleus Re 186

    Excited states in Re186 with spins up to J=12 were investigated in two separate experiments using W186(d,2n) reactions at beam energies of 12.5 and 14.5 MeV. Two- and threefold Îł-ray coincidence data were collected using the CAESAR and CAGRA spectrometers, respectively, each composed of Compton-suppressed high-purity germanium detectors. Analysis of the data revealed rotational bands built on several two-quasiparticle intrinsic states, including a long-lived Kπ=(8+) isomer. Configuration assignments were supported by an analysis of in-band properties, such as gK-gR values. The excitation energies of the observed intrinsic states were compared with results from multi-quasiparticle blocking calculations, based on the Lipkin-Nogami pairing approach, that included contributions from the residual proton-neutron interactions
