Spitzer Imaging of the Nearby Rich Young Cluster, Cep OB3b
We map the full extent of a rich massive young cluster in the Cep OB3b
association with the IRAC and MIPS instruments aboard the {\it Spitzer} Space
Telescope and the ACIS instrument aboard the X-Ray Observatory.
At 700 pc, it is revealed to be the second nearest large ( member),
young ( Myr) cluster known. In contrast to the nearest large cluster, the
Orion Nebula Cluster, Cep OB3b is only lightly obscured and is mostly located
in a large cavity carved out of the surrounding molecular cloud. Our infrared
and X-ray datasets, as well as visible photometry from the literature, are used
to take a census of the young stars in Cep OB3b. We find that the young stars
within the cluster are concentrated in two sub-clusters; an eastern
sub-cluster, near the Cep B molecular clump, and a western sub-cluster, near
the Cep F molecular clump. Using our census of young stars, we examine the
fraction of young stars with infrared excesses indicative of circumstellar
disks. We create a map of the disk fraction throughout the cluster and find
that it is spatially variable. Due to these spatial variations, the two
sub-clusters exhibit substantially different average disk fractions from each
other: and . We discuss whether the discrepant disk
fractions are due to the photodestruction of disks by the high mass members of
the cluster or whether they result from differences in the ages of the
sub-clusters. We conclude that the discrepant disk fractions are most likely

Evaluating the Quality of Research into a Single Prognostic Biomarker: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis of 83 Studies of C-Reactive Protein in Stable Coronary Artery Disease
Background
Systematic evaluations of the quality of research on a single prognostic biomarker are rare. We sought to evaluate the quality of prognostic research evidence for the association of C-reactive protein (CRP) with fatal and nonfatal events among patients with stable coronary disease.
Methods and Findings
We searched MEDLINE (1966 to 2009) and EMBASE (1980 to 2009) and selected prospective studies of patients with stable coronary disease, reporting a relative risk for the association of CRP with death and nonfatal cardiovascular events. We included 83 studies, reporting 61,684 patients and 6,485 outcome events. No study reported a prespecified statistical analysis protocol; only two studies reported the time elapsed (in months or years) between initial presentation of symptomatic coronary disease and inclusion in the study. Studies reported a median of seven items (of 17) from the REMARK reporting guidelines, with no evidence of change over time.
The pooled relative risk for the top versus bottom third of CRP distribution was 1.97 (95% confidence interval [CI] 1.78–2.17), with substantial heterogeneity (I2 = 79.5). Only 13 studies adjusted for conventional risk factors (age, sex, smoking, obesity, diabetes, and low-density lipoprotein [LDL] cholesterol) and these had a relative risk of 1.65 (95% CI 1.39–1.96), I2 = 33.7. Studies reported ten different ways of comparing CRP values, with weaker relative risks for those based on continuous measures. Adjusting for publication bias (for which there was strong evidence, Egger's p<0.001) using a validated method reduced the relative risk to 1.19 (95% CI 1.13–1.25). Only two studies reported a measure of discrimination (c-statistic). In 20 studies the detection rate for subsequent events could be calculated and was 31% for a 10% false positive rate, and the calculated pooled c-statistic was 0.61 (0.57–0.66).
Conclusion
Multiple types of reporting bias, and publication bias, make the magnitude of any independent association between CRP and prognosis among patients with stable coronary disease sufficiently uncertain that no clinical practice recommendations can be made. Publication of prespecified statistical analytic protocols and prospective registration of studies, among other measures, might help improve the quality of prognostic biomarker research
Renormalization group approach to an Abelian sandpile model on planar lattices
One important step in the renormalization group (RG) approach to a lattice
sandpile model is the exact enumeration of all possible toppling processes of
sandpile dynamics inside a cell for RG transformations. Here we propose a
computer algorithm to carry out such exact enumeration for cells of planar
lattices in RG approach to Bak-Tang-Wiesenfeld sandpile model [Phys. Rev. Lett.
{\bf 59}, 381 (1987)] and consider both the reduced-high RG equations proposed
by Pietronero, Vespignani, and Zapperi (PVZ) [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 72}, 1690
(1994)] and the real-height RG equations proposed by Ivashkevich [Phys. Rev.
Lett. {\bf 76}, 3368 (1996)]. Using this algorithm we are able to carry out RG
transformations more quickly with large cell size, e.g. cell for
the square (sq) lattice in PVZ RG equations, which is the largest cell size at
the present, and find some mistakes in a previous paper [Phys. Rev. E {\bf 51},
1711 (1995)]. For sq and plane triangular (pt) lattices, we obtain the only
attractive fixed point for each lattice and calculate the avalanche exponent
and the dynamical exponent . Our results suggest that the increase of
the cell size in the PVZ RG transformation does not lead to more accurate

Rotation of young stars in Cepheus OB3b
We present a photometric study of I-band variability in the young association Cepheus OB3b. The study is sensitive to periodic variability on time-scales of less than a day, to more than 20 d. After rejection of contaminating objects using V, I, R and narrow-band Hα photometry, we find 475 objects with measured rotation periods, which are very likely pre-main-sequence members of the Cep OB3b star-forming region.
We revise the distance and age to Cep OB3b, putting it on the self-consistent age and distance ladder of Mayne & Naylor. This yields a distance modulus of 8.8 ± 0.2 mag, corresponding to a distance of 580 ± 60 pc, and an age of 4–5 Myr.
The rotation period distribution confirms the general picture of rotational evolution in young stars, exhibiting both the correlation between accretion (determined in this case through narrow-band Hα photometry) and rotation expected from disc locking, and the dependence of rotation upon mass that is seen in other star-forming regions. However, this mass dependence is much weaker in our data than found in other studies. Comparison to the similarly aged NGC 2362 shows that the low-mass stars in Cep OB3b are rotating much more slowly. This points to a possible link between star-forming environment and rotation properties. Such a link would call into question models of stellar angular momentum evolution, which assume that the rotational period distributions of young clusters and associations can be assembled into an evolutionary sequence, thus ignoring environmental effects
Cloud Structure and Physical Conditions in Star-Forming Regions from Optical Observations. II. Analysis
To complement the optical absorption-line survey of diffuse molecular gas in
Paper I, we obtained and analyzed far ultraviolet H and CO data on lines of
sight toward stars in Cep OB2 and Cep OB3. Possible correlations between column
densities of different species for individual velocity components, not total
columns along a line of sight as in the past, were examined and were
interpreted in terms of cloud structure. The analysis reveals that there are
two kinds of CH in diffuse molecular gas: CN-like CH and CH-like CH.
Evidence is provided that CO is also associated with CN in diffuse molecular
clouds. Different species are distributed according to gas density in the
diffuse molecular gas. Both calcium and potassium may be depleted onto grains
in high density gas, but with different dependences on local gas density. Gas
densities for components where CN was detected were inferred from a chemical
model. Analysis of cloud structure indicates that our data are generally
consistent with the large-scale structure suggested by maps of CO
millimeter-wave emission. On small scales, the gas density is seen to vary by
factors greater than 5.0 over scales of 10,000 AU. The relationships
between column densities of CO and CH with that of H along a line of sight
show similar slopes for the gas toward Cep OB2 and OB3, but the CO/H and
CH/H ratios tend to differ which we ascribe to variation in average density

Complement Factor H Is Expressed in Adipose Tissue in Association With Insulin Resistance
10 páginas, 5 figuras, 5 tablas -- PAGS nros. 200-209OBJECTIVE Activation of the alternative pathway of the complement system, in which factor H (fH; complement fH [CFH]) is a key regulatory component, has been suggested as a link between obesity and metabolic disorders. Our objective was to study the associations between circulating and adipose tissue gene expressions of CFH and complement factor B (fB; CFB) with obesity and insulin resistance.
RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS Circulating fH and fB were determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay in 398 subjects. CFH and CFB gene expressions were evaluated in 76 adipose tissue samples, in isolated adipocytes, and in stromovascular cells (SVC) (n = 13). The effects of weight loss and rosiglitazone were investigated in independent cohorts.
RESULTS Both circulating fH and fB were associated positively with BMI, waist circumference, triglycerides, and inflammatory parameters and negatively with insulin sensitivity and HDL cholesterol. For the first time, CFH gene expression was detected in human adipose tissue (significantly increased in subcutaneous compared with omental fat). CFH gene expression in omental fat was significantly associated with insulin resistance. In contrast, CFB gene expression was significantly increased in omental fat but also in association with fasting glucose and triglycerides. The SVC fraction was responsible for these differences, although isolated adipocytes also expressed fB and fH at low levels. Both weight loss and rosiglitazone led to significantly decreased circulating fB and fH levels.
CONCLUSIONS Increased circulating fH and fB concentrations in subjects with altered glucose tolerance could reflect increased SVC-induced activation of the alternative pathway of complement in omental adipose tissue linked to insulin resistance and metabolic disturbances.Obesity is closely associated with a cluster of metabolic diseases, such as dyslipidemia, hypertension, insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, and atherosclerosis (1). Adipose tissue is well known for its essential role as an energy storage depot and for secreting adipokines that influence sites as diverse as brain, liver, muscle, β-cells, gonads, lymphoid organs, and systemic vasculature (2,3). Expression analysis of macrophage and nonmacrophage cell populations isolated from adipose tissue demonstrates that adipose tissue macrophages are responsible for most of the proinflammatory cytokines (4). In recent years, it has become evident that alterations in the function of the innate immune system are intrinsically linked to metabolic pathways in humans (5–8).
The complement system is a major component of the innate immune system, defending the host against pathogens, coordinating various events during inflammation, and bridging innate and adaptive immune responses. Complement deficiency and abnormalities in the regulation of the complement system lead to increased susceptibility to infection and chronic inflammatory diseases (9,10,11).
Factor H (fH) is a relatively abundant plasma glycoprotein that is essential to maintain complement homeostasis and to restrict the action of complement to activating surfaces. fH acts as a cofactor for factor I–mediated cleavage of C3b (the active fragment of the third component of complement C3), accelerates the dissociation of the alternative pathway C3 convertases (a bimolecular enzymatic complex formed by active fragments of C3 and factor B [fB]), and competes with fB for binding to C3b. fH regulates complement both in fluid phase and on cellular surfaces (12–16).
It has been suggested that activation of the alternative pathway of the complement system could be a link between obesity and metabolic disorders (17–21). Moreover, fB and factor D (fD, adipsin) are produced by adipose tissue where they likely influence formation of the alternative pathway component C3 convertase and the production of the anaphylatoxin C3a and its carboxypeptidase B-anaphylatoxic–inactivated derivative C3adesArg (acylation-stimulating protein [ASP]). Both ASP/C3adesArg and C3a interact with the receptor C5L2 to effectively stimulate triglyceride synthesis in cultured adipocytes (22). C3 knockout (C3KO) mice are obligatorily ASP deficient and present lipid abnormalities (23). In humans, ASP levels are increased in obesity, type 2 diabetes, and in individuals at risk of arterial disease, including those with hypertension, type 2 diabetes, dyslipidemia, and coronary artery disease, whereas exercise or weight loss decreases ASP levels (24,25). These data suggest a relationship between these conditions and activation of the alternative pathway of complement. There is also a correlation between increased C3 concentration and decreased insulin action (26,27). Levels of C3 and fB were higher in subjects with insulin resistance and other features of the metabolic syndrome (28,29).Given these interactions among activation of the alternative pathway of complement, metabolic disturbances, and a chronic low-level inflammatory state, we designed experiments to study the associations among circulating fH, fB, insulin resistance, lipid parameters, and inflammatory markers. We found that circulating fH and fB are strongly associated with obesity. Multiplicity dependence of jet-like two-particle correlations in p-Pb collisions at = 5.02 TeV
Two-particle angular correlations between unidentified charged trigger and
associated particles are measured by the ALICE detector in p-Pb collisions at a
nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass energy of 5.02 TeV. The transverse-momentum
range 0.7 5.0 GeV/ is examined,
to include correlations induced by jets originating from low
momen\-tum-transfer scatterings (minijets). The correlations expressed as
associated yield per trigger particle are obtained in the pseudorapidity range
. The near-side long-range pseudorapidity correlations observed in
high-multiplicity p-Pb collisions are subtracted from both near-side
short-range and away-side correlations in order to remove the non-jet-like
components. The yields in the jet-like peaks are found to be invariant with
event multiplicity with the exception of events with low multiplicity. This
invariance is consistent with the particles being produced via the incoherent
fragmentation of multiple parton--parton scatterings, while the yield related
to the previously observed ridge structures is not jet-related. The number of
uncorrelated sources of particle production is found to increase linearly with
multiplicity, suggesting no saturation of the number of multi-parton
interactions even in the highest multiplicity p-Pb collisions. Further, the
number scales in the intermediate multiplicity region with the number of binary

Charge separation relative to the reaction plane in Pb-Pb collisions at TeV
Measurements of charge dependent azimuthal correlations with the ALICE
detector at the LHC are reported for Pb-Pb collisions at TeV. Two- and three-particle charge-dependent azimuthal correlations in
the pseudo-rapidity range are presented as a function of the
collision centrality, particle separation in pseudo-rapidity, and transverse
momentum. A clear signal compatible with a charge-dependent separation relative
to the reaction plane is observed, which shows little or no collision energy
dependence when compared to measurements at RHIC energies. This provides a new
insight for understanding the nature of the charge dependent azimuthal

Multi-particle azimuthal correlations in p-Pb and Pb-Pb collisions at the CERN Large Hadron Collider
Measurements of multi-particle azimuthal correlations (cumulants) for charged
particles in p-Pb and Pb-Pb collisions are presented. They help address the
question of whether there is evidence for global, flow-like, azimuthal
correlations in the p-Pb system. Comparisons are made to measurements from the
larger Pb-Pb system, where such evidence is established. In particular, the
second harmonic two-particle cumulants are found to decrease with multiplicity,
characteristic of a dominance of few-particle correlations in p-Pb collisions.
However, when a gap is placed to suppress such correlations,
the two-particle cumulants begin to rise at high-multiplicity, indicating the
presence of global azimuthal correlations. The Pb-Pb values are higher than the
p-Pb values at similar multiplicities. In both systems, the second harmonic
four-particle cumulants exhibit a transition from positive to negative values
when the multiplicity increases. The negative values allow for a measurement of
to be made, which is found to be higher in Pb-Pb collisions at
similar multiplicities. The second harmonic six-particle cumulants are also
found to be higher in Pb-Pb collisions. In Pb-Pb collisions, we generally find
which is indicative of a Bessel-Gaussian
function for the distribution. For very high-multiplicity Pb-Pb
collisions, we observe that the four- and six-particle cumulants become
consistent with 0. Finally, third harmonic two-particle cumulants in p-Pb and
Pb-Pb are measured. These are found to be similar for overlapping

A note on comonotonicity and positivity of the control components of decoupled quadratic FBSDE
In this small note we are concerned with the solution of Forward-Backward
Stochastic Differential Equations (FBSDE) with drivers that grow quadratically
in the control component (quadratic growth FBSDE or qgFBSDE). The main theorem
is a comparison result that allows comparing componentwise the signs of the
control processes of two different qgFBSDE. As a byproduct one obtains
