    Alterations in auditory brain stem response distinguish occasional and constant tinnitus

    BACKGROUND. The heterogeneity of tinnitus is thought to underlie the lack of objective diagnostic measures. METHODS. Longitudinal data from 20,349 participants of the Swedish Longitudinal Occupational Survey of Health (SLOSH) cohort from 2008 to 2018 were used to understand the dynamics of transition between occasional and constant tinnitus. The second part of the study included electrophysiological data from 405 participants of the Swedish Tinnitus Outreach Project (STOP) cohort. RESULTS. We determined that with increasing frequency of the occasional perception of self-reported tinnitus, the odds of reporting constant tinnitus after 2 years increases from 5.62 (95% CI, 4.83–6.55) for previous tinnitus (sometimes) to 29.74 (4.82–6.55) for previous tinnitus (often). When previous tinnitus was reported to be constant, the odds of reporting it as constant after 2 years rose to 603.02 (524.74–692.98), suggesting that once transitioned to constant tinnitus, the likelihood of tinnitus to persist was much greater. Auditory brain stem responses (ABRs) from subjects reporting nontinnitus (controls), occasional tinnitus, and constant tinnitus show that wave V latency increased in constant tinnitus when compared with occasional tinnitus or nontinnitus. The ABR from occasional tinnitus was indistinguishable from that of the nontinnitus controls. CONCLUSIONS. Our results support the hypothesis that the transition from occasional to constant tinnitus is accompanied by neuronal changes in the midbrain leading to a persisting tinnitus, which is then less likely to remit.publishedVersio

    Ultracold atomic gases in optical lattices: mimicking condensed matter physics and beyond

    We review recent developments in the physics of ultracold atomic and molecular gases in optical lattices. Such systems are nearly perfect realisations of various kinds of Hubbard models, and as such may very well serve to mimic condensed matter phenomena. We show how these systems may be employed as quantum simulators to answer some challenging open questions of condensed matter, and even high energy physics. After a short presentation of the models and the methods of treatment of such systems, we discuss in detail, which challenges of condensed matter physics can be addressed with (i) disordered ultracold lattice gases, (ii) frustrated ultracold gases, (iii) spinor lattice gases, (iv) lattice gases in "artificial" magnetic fields, and, last but not least, (v) quantum information processing in lattice gases.     Local structure study about Co in YBa2_2(Cu1−x_{1-x}Cox_x)3_3O7−ή_{7-\delta} thin films using polarized XAFS

    We have studied the local structure around Co in YBa2_2(Cu1−x_{1-x}Cox_x)3_3O7−ή_{7-\delta} thin films with three different concentrations: x=0.07, 0.10, 0.17, and in a PrBa2_2(Cu1−x_{1-x}Cox_x)3_3O7−ή_{7-\delta} thin film of concentration x=0.05 using the X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (XAFS) technique. Data were collected at the Co KK-edge with polarizations both parallel and perpendicular to the film surface. We find that the oxygen neighbors are well ordered and shortened in comparison with YBCO Cu-O values to 1.80 \AA{} and 1.87 \AA{} in the cc-axis and abab-plane, respectively. A comparison of further neighbors in the thin film and powder data show that these peaks in the film are suppressed in amplitude relative to the powder samples, which suggests there is more disorder and/or distortions of the Co environment present in the thin films.Comment: 14 pages; To be submitted to Phys.     Under-Five Mortality in High Focus States in India: A District Level Geospatial Analysis

    <div><h3>Background</h3><p>This paper examines if, when controlling for biophysical and geographical variables (including rainfall, productivity of agricultural lands, topography/temperature, and market access through road networks), socioeconomic and health care indicators help to explain variations in the under-five mortality rate across districts from nine high focus states in India. The literature on this subject is inconclusive because the survey data, upon which most studies of child mortality rely, rarely include variables that measure these factors. This paper introduces these variables into an analysis of 284 districts from nine high focus states in India.</p> <h3>Methodology/Principal Findings</h3><p>Information on the mortality indicator was accessed from the recently conducted Annual Health Survey of 2011 and other socioeconomic and geographic variables from Census 2011, District Level Household and Facility Survey (2007–08), Department of Economics and Statistics Divisions of the concerned states. Displaying high spatial dependence (spatial autocorrelation) in the mortality indicator (outcome variable) and its possible predictors used in the analysis, the paper uses the Spatial-Error Model in an effort to negate or reduce the spatial dependence in model parameters. The results evince that the coverage gap index (a mixed indicator of district wise coverage of reproductive and child health services), female literacy, urbanization, economic status, the number of newborn care provided in Primary Health Centers in the district transpired as significant correlates of under-five mortality in the nine high focus states in India. The study identifies three clusters with high under-five mortality rate including 30 districts, and advocates urgent attention.</p> <h3>Conclusion</h3><p>Even after controlling the possible biophysical and geographical variables, the study reveals that the health program initiatives have a major role to play in reducing under-five mortality rate in the high focus states in India.</p> </div

    Natural products in modern life science

    With a realistic threat against biodiversity in rain forests and in the sea, a sustainable use of natural products is becoming more and more important. Basic research directed against different organisms in Nature could reveal unexpected insights into fundamental biological mechanisms but also new pharmaceutical or biotechnological possibilities of more immediate use. Many different strategies have been used prospecting the biodiversity of Earth in the search for novel structure–activity relationships, which has resulted in important discoveries in drug development. However, we believe that the development of multidisciplinary incentives will be necessary for a future successful exploration of Nature. With this aim, one way would be a modernization and renewal of a venerable proven interdisciplinary science, Pharmacognosy, which represents an integrated way of studying biological systems. This has been demonstrated based on an explanatory model where the different parts of the model are explained by our ongoing research. Anti-inflammatory natural products have been discovered based on ethnopharmacological observations, marine sponges in cold water have resulted in substances with ecological impact, combinatory strategy of ecology and chemistry has revealed new insights into the biodiversity of fungi, in depth studies of cyclic peptides (cyclotides) has created new possibilities for engineering of bioactive peptides, development of new strategies using phylogeny and chemography has resulted in new possibilities for navigating chemical and biological space, and using bioinformatic tools for understanding of lateral gene transfer could provide potential drug targets. A multidisciplinary subject like Pharmacognosy, one of several scientific disciplines bridging biology and chemistry with medicine, has a strategic position for studies of complex scientific questions based on observations in Nature. Furthermore, natural product research based on intriguing scientific questions in Nature can be of value to increase the attraction for young students in modern life science

    Vicariance and dispersal in southern hemisphere freshwater fish clades: a palaeontological perspective

    Widespread fish clades that occur mainly or exclusively in fresh water represent a key target of biogeographical investigation due to limited potential for crossing marine barriers. Timescales for the origin and diversification of these groups are crucial tests of vicariant scenarios in which continental break‐ups shaped modern geographic distributions. Evolutionary chronologies are commonly estimated through node‐based palaeontological calibration of molecular phylogenies, but this approach ignores most of the temporal information encoded in the known fossil record of a given taxon. Here, we review the fossil record of freshwater fish clades with a distribution encompassing disjunct landmasses in the southern hemisphere. Palaeontologically derived temporal and geographic data were used to infer the plausible biogeographic processes that shaped the distribution of these clades. For seven extant clades with a relatively well‐known fossil record, we used the stratigraphic distribution of their fossils to estimate confidence intervals on their times of origin. To do this, we employed a Bayesian framework that considers non‐uniform preservation potential of freshwater fish fossils through time, as well as uncertainty in the absolute age of fossil horizons. We provide the following estimates for the origin times of these clades: Lepidosireniformes [125–95 million years ago (Ma)]; total‐group Osteoglossomorpha (207–167 Ma); Characiformes (120–95 Ma; a younger estimate of 97–75 Ma when controversial Cenomanian fossils are excluded); Galaxiidae (235–21 Ma); Cyprinodontiformes (80–67 Ma); Channidae (79–43 Ma); Percichthyidae (127–69 Ma). These dates are mostly congruent with published molecular timetree estimates, despite the use of semi‐independent data. Our reassessment of the biogeographic history of southern hemisphere freshwater fishes shows that long‐distance dispersals and regional extinctions can confound and erode pre‐existing vicariance‐driven patterns. It is probable that disjunct distributions in many extant groups result from complex biogeographic processes that took place during the Late Cretaceous and Cenozoic.     A critical review of the global minimum variance theory

    The main purpose of this thesis is to give a basic understanding of the GMV portfolio theory and the problematics that arise when using the sample covariance matrix as the only parameter. The reason for this is the amount of estimation error that tends to increase as the sample covariance matrix goes to a higher dimension. In an attempt to reduce the amount of error, an alternative approach based on sector indices is introduced, which gives new and interesting results. This is a useful approach, since we are explaining the chosen stocks with fewer time series, a smaller dimension of covariance matrix needs to be estimated. This thesis lay the ground for this basic strategy, however, before any more profound conclusions can be drawn, further investigations have to be made

    An alternative approach for solving the problem of close to singular covariance matrices in modern portfolio theory

    In this thesis the effects of utilizing the sample covariance matrix in the estimation of the global minimum variance (GMV) portfolio are presented. When the number of assets, N, are close to the number of observations, T, the sample covariance matrix approaches singularity, leading to a lot of uncertainties in form of estimation error. Due to that the computations of the sample GMV portfolio are linear transformations of the sample co- variance matrix inverse, the error is transferred to the portfolio weights. As a consequence, the portfolio performance out-of-sample is misleading and inadequate. To solve this shortcoming an alternative approach is presented. By grouping similar stocks together, utilizing sector indices, the dimension of the sample covariance matrix is decreased and consequently the estimation error. As a result, the sample sector index portfolio displays a more stable structure than the sample GMV portfolio counterpart as N / T → 1. This leads to more accurate parameter estimates and less volatile portfolio performances out-of-sample

Detta bjÀlklag ska i bÀrriktning 1 bÀra genom fackverkan medan det i bÀrriktning 2 ska bÀra genom balkverkan. För att ett fyrsidigt upplagt bjÀlklag ska fungera krÀvs att sambandet mellan kraft och deformation Àr likvÀrdigt i bÄda riktningarna. Examensarbetets uppgift har varit att tillverka provkroppar för att undersöka sambandet mellan kraft och deformation i bÄde bÀrriktning 1 och bÀrriktning 2. Provning utförs för att se om bjÀlklaget har förutsÀttningar att kunna anvÀndas i praktiken. Efter provning av bjÀlklagsprovkropparna konstaterades att det finns möjligheter att gÄ vidare med produkten och fortsÀtta utvecklingsarbetet. För de provkroppar som provades i bÀrriktning 1 och 2 var sambandet mellan kraft och deformation nÀra identisk upp till 7,5 kN dÄ mittnedböjningen var ca 10 mm
