Accuracy of laser measurements improved by pulse autocorrelator electronic system
Pulse autocorrelator electronic system discriminates between the dispersion effect of a disturbed laser signal and background noise by detecting multipath arrivals of Gaussian-shaped signal pulses. The autocorrelation function is time-dependent and can be determined by integrating the product of a received pulse and its delayed replicas
Phase Equilibria for Quaternary Mixtures in Esterification Reaction Systems
This paper examines the effect of the simultaneous chemical and phase equilibrium on the conceptual design of reactive distillation processes. Esterification of acetic acid with methanol, ethanol and butanol are examined. Using commercial software, azeotropic points, residue curve maps and distillation line diagrams having been calculated. The analyzed systems have showed different behavior when phase equilibrium parameters and chemical equilibrium constants are changed. The methyl acetate system does not change the topological features of residue curve maps and distillation line diagrams. The ethyl acetate system and the butyl acetate system change the topological features of the graphs when different chemical equilibrium constants are used.Fil: Campanella, Enrique Angel. Distribution Coefficient Calculation in Ternary Liquid-Liquid Systems
A good description of liquid-liquid equilibrium is important to design extraction separation processes. Equilibrium data are normally needed as distribution coefficients for each individual component. In this paper we have combined activity coefficient models with Hand?s equation for tie lines to calculate distribution coefficients in ternary systems. The proposed method gives betterdistribution coefficients than those calculated using only activity coefficient models. Besides, the proposed method could be employed to extrapolate experimental information when liquid-liquid equilibrium data are few.Fil: Mandagaran, Beatriz Adriana. Speed-accuracy strategy regulations in prefrontal tumor patients
The ability to flexibly switch between fast and accurate decisions is crucial in everyday life. Recent neuroimaging evidence suggested that left lateral prefrontal cortex plays a role in switching from a quick response strategy to an accurate one. However, the causal role of the left prefrontal cortex in this particular, non-verbal, strategy switch has never been demonstrated. To fill this gap, we administered a perceptual decision-making task to neuro-oncological prefrontal patients, in which the requirement to be quick or accurate changed randomly on a trial-by-trial basis. To directly assess hemispheric asymmetries in speed-accuracy regulation, patients were tested a few days before and a few days after surgical excision of a brain tumor involving either the left (N=13) or the right (N=12) lateral frontal brain region. A group of age- and education-matched healthy controls was also recruited. To gain more insight on the component processes implied in the task, performance data (accuracy and speed) were not only analyzed separately but also submitted to a diffusion model analysis. The main findings indicated that the left prefrontal patients were impaired in appropriately adopting stricter response criteria in speed-to-accuracy switching trials with respect to healthy controls and right prefrontal patients, who were not impaired in this condition. This study demonstrates that the prefrontal cortex in the left hemisphere is necessary for flexible behavioral regulations, in particular when setting stricter response criteria is required in order to successfully switch from a speedy strategy to an accurate one
Onboard multichannel demultiplexer/demodulator
An investigation performed for NASA LeRC by COMSAT Labs, of a digitally implemented on-board demultiplexer/demodulator able to process a mix of uplink carriers of differing bandwidths and center frequencies and programmable in orbit to accommodate variations in traffic flow is reported. The processor accepts high speed samples of the signal carried in a wideband satellite transponder channel, processes these as a composite to determine the signal spectrum, filters the result into individual channels that carry modulated carriers and demodulate these to recover their digital baseband content. The processor is implemented by using forward and inverse pipeline Fast Fourier Transformation techniques. The recovered carriers are then demodulated using a single digitally implemented demodulator that processes all of the modulated carriers. The effort has determined the feasibility of the concept with multiple TDMA carriers, identified critical path technologies, and assessed the potential of developing these technologies to a level capable of supporting a practical, cost effective on-board implementation. The result is a flexible, high speed, digitally implemented Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) bulk demultiplexer/demodulator
