    Equation of State of H2O Ice Using Melt-Recrystallization

    The recent surge in exoplanet discoveries due to advancements in astrophysical technology and analysis has brought the reliability of early equation of state measurements into question as they are the limiting factor when modeling composition of these planets. H2O content is among the most important for the search of habitable planets as well as in understanding planetary dynamics and atmosphere formation. Over the last three decades the equation of state of H2O has been investigated with various techniques but, has suffered from anisotropic strain and poor powder statistics resulting in a large discrepancy in equation of state fits. At pressures within the interior of many planets, the hydrogen bonds in H2O gradually weaken and are replaced by ionic bonds in ice-X. By melt-recrystallization of ice via laser heating as it is compressed, we observe the transition from ice-VII to ice X at a pressure of 30.9 ± 2.9 GPa, evidenced by an abrupt 2.5-fold increase in bulk modulus, implying an increase in bond strength. Copyright @ 2009 Elsevier B.V.The e2v technologies CCD54, or swept-charge device (SCD) has been extensively radiation tested for use in the Chandrayaan-1 X-ray Spectrometer (C1XS) instrument, to be launched as a part of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) Chandrayaan-1 payload in 2008. The principle use of the SCD is in X-ray fluorescence (XRF) applications, the device providing a relatively large collecting area of 1.1 cm2, and achieving near Fano-limited spectroscopy at −15 °C, a temperature that is easily obtained using a thermoelectric cooler (TEC). This paper describes the structure and operation of the SCD and details the methodology and results obtained from two proton irradiation studies carried out in 2006 and 2008, respectively to quantify the effects of proton irradiation on the operational characteristics of the device. The analysis concentrates on the degradation of the measured FWHM of various elemental lines and quantifies the effects of proton fluence on the observed X-ray fluorescence spectra from mineralogical target samples

    Many 2-level polytopes from matroids

    The family of 2-level matroids, that is, matroids whose base polytope is 2-level, has been recently studied and characterized by means of combinatorial properties. 2-level matroids generalize series-parallel graphs, which have been already successfully analyzed from the enumerative perspective. We bring to light some structural properties of 2-level matroids and exploit them for enumerative purposes. Moreover, the counting results are used to show that the number of combinatorially non-equivalent (n-1)-dimensional 2-level polytopes is bounded from below by c⋅n−5/2⋅ρ−nc \cdot n^{-5/2} \cdot \rho^{-n}, where c≈0.03791727c\approx 0.03791727 and ρ−1≈4.88052854\rho^{-1} \approx 4.88052854.Comment: revised version, 19 pages, 7 figure

    LXCDM cosmologies: solving the cosmological coincidence problem?

    We explore the possibility of having a composite (self-conserved) dark energy (DE) whose dynamics is controlled by the quantum running of the cosmological parameters.
