Probabilistic, spinally-gated control of bladder pressure and autonomous micturition by Barringtonās nucleus CRH neurons
Micturition requires precise control of bladder and urethral sphincter via parasympathetic, sympathetic and somatic motoneurons. This involves a spino-bulbospinal control circuit incorporating Barringtonās nucleus in the pons (Barr). Ponto-spinal glutamatergic neurons that express corticotrophin-releasing hormone (CRH) form one of the largest Barr cell populations. BarrCRH neurons can generate bladder contractions, but it is unknown whether they act as a simple switch or provide a high-fidelity pre-parasympathetic motor drive and whether their activation can actually trigger voids. Combined opto- and chemo-genetic manipulations along with multisite extracellular recordings in urethane anaesthetised CRHCre mice show that BarrCRH neurons provide a probabilistic drive that generates co-ordinated voids or non-voiding contractions depending on the phase of the micturition cycle. CRH itself provides negative feedback regulation of this process. These findings inform a new inferential model of autonomous micturition and emphasise the importance of the state of the spinal gating circuit in the generation of voiding
Specific-heat study of superconducting and normal states in FeSe1-xTex (0.6<=x<=1) single crystals: Strong-coupling superconductivity, strong electron-correlation, and inhomogeneity
The electronic specific heat of as-grown and annealed single-crystals of
FeSe1-xTex (0.6<=x<=1) has been investigated. It has been found that annealed
single-crystals with x=0.6-0.9 exhibit bulk superconductivity with a clear
specific-heat jump at the superconducting (SC) transition temperature, Tc. Both
2Delta_0/kBTc [Delta_0: the SC gap at 0 K estimated using the single-band BCS
s-wave model] and Delta C/(gamma_n-gamma_0)Tc [Delta C$: the specific-heat jump
at Tc, gamma_n: the electronic specific-heat coefficient in the normal state,
gamma_0: the residual electronic specific-heat coefficient at 0 K in the SC
state] are largest in the well-annealed single-crystal with x=0.7, i.e., 4.29
and 2.76, respectively, indicating that the superconductivity is of the strong
coupling. The thermodynamic critical field has also been estimated. gamma_n has
been found to be one order of magnitude larger than those estimated from the
band calculations and increases with increasing x at x=0.6-0.9, which is
surmised to be due to the increase in the electronic effective mass, namely,
the enhancement of the electron correlation. It has been found that there
remains a finite value of gamma_0 in the SC state even in the well-annealed
single-crystals with x=0.8-0.9, suggesting an inhomogeneous electronic state in
real space and/or momentum space.Comment: 22 pages, 1 table, 6 figures, Version 2 has been accepted for

Physical properties of FeSeTe single crystals grown under different conditions
We report on structural, magnetic, conductivity, and thermodynamic studies of
FeSeTe single crystals grown by self-flux and Bridgman methods.
The samples were prepared from starting materials of different purity at
various temperatures and cooling rates. The lowest values of the susceptibility
in the normal state, the highest transition temperature of 14.5 K, and
the largest heat-capacity anomaly at were obtained for pure (oxygen-free)
samples. The critical current density of A/cm (at 2
K) achieved in pure samples is attributed to intrinsic inhomogeneity due to
disorder at the cation and anion sites. The impure samples show increased
up to A/cm due to additional pinning centers of
FeO. The upper critical field of kOe is estimated
from the resistivity study in magnetic fields parallel to the \emph{c}-axis.
The anisotropy of the upper critical field reaches a value at . Extremely low values of the residual Sommerfeld coefficient for pure
samples indicate a high volume fraction of the superconducting phase (up to
97%). The electronic contribution to the specific heat in the superconducting
state is well described within a single-band BCS model with a temperature
dependent gap K. A broad cusp-like anomaly in the electronic
specific heat of samples with suppressed bulk superconductivity is ascribed to
a splitting of the ground state of the interstitial Fe ions. This
contribution is fully suppressed in the ordered state in samples with bulk
superconductivity.Comment: 11 pages, 11 figures, 3 table
Comparative study of single and multislice computed tomography for assessment of the mandibular canal
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of relative measurements from the roof of the mandibular canal to the alveolar crest in multislice (multidetector) computed tomography (MDCT) and single-slice computed tomography (SSCT). MATERIAL AND METHODS: The sample consisted of 26 printed CT films (7 SSCT and 19 MDCT) from the files of the LABI-3D (3D Imaging Laboratory) of the School of Dentistry of the University of SĆ£o Paulo (FOUSP), which had been acquired using different protocols. Two observers analyzed in a randomized and independent order a series of 22 oblique CT reconstructions of each patient. Each observer analyzed the CT scans twice. The length of the mandibular canal and the distance between the mandibular canal roof and the crest of the alveolar ridge were obtained. Dahlberg test was used for statistical analysis. RESULTS: The mean error found for the mandibular canal length measurements obtained from SSCT was 0.53 mm in the interobserver analysis, and 0.38 mm for both observers. On MDCT images, the mean error was 0.0 mm in the interobserver analysis, and 0.0 and 0.23 mm in the intraobserver analysis. Regarding the distance between the mandibular canal roof and the alveolar bone crest, the SSCT images showed a mean error of 1.16 mm in the interobserver analysis and 0.66 and 0.59 mm in the intraobserver analysis. In the MDCT images, the mean error was 0.72 mm in the interobserver analysis and 0.50 and 0.54 mm in the intraobserver analysis. CONCLUSION: Multislice CT was demonstrated a more accurate method and demonstrated high reproducibility in the analysis of important anatomical landmarks for planning of mandibular dental implants, namely the mandibular canal pathway and alveolar crest height
Gap structure in the electron-doped Iron-Arsenide Superconductor Ba(Fe0.92Co0.08)2As2: low-temperature specific heat study
We report the field and temperature dependence of the low-temperature
specific heat down to 400 mK and in magnetic fields up to 9 T of the
electron-doped Ba(Fe0.92Co0.08)2As2 superconductor. Using the phonon specific
heat obtained from pure BaFe2As2 we find the normal state Sommerfeld
coefficient to be 18 mJ/mol.K^2 and a condensation energy of 1.27 J/mol. The
temperature dependence of the electronic specific heat clearly indicate the
presence of the low-energy excitations in the system. The magnetic field
variation of field-induced specific heat cannot be described by single clean s-
or d-wave models. Rather, the data require an anisotropic gap scenario which
may or may not have nodes. We discuss the implications of these results.Comment: New Journal of Physics in press, 10 pages, 5 figure
Diabetes Is the Main Factor Accounting for Hypomagnesemia in Obese Subjects
OBJECTIVE: Type 2 diabetes (T2DM) and obesity are associated with magnesium deficiency. We aimed to determine whether the presence of type 2 diabetes and the degree of metabolic control are related to low serum magnesium levels in obese individuals. METHODS: A) Case-control study: 200 obese subjects [50 with T2DM (cases) and 150 without diabetes (controls)] prospectively recruited. B) Interventional study: the effect of bariatric surgery on serum magnesium levels was examined in a subset of 120 obese subjects (40 with type 2 diabetes and 80 without diabetes). RESULTS: Type 2 diabetic patients showed lower serum magnesium levels [0.75Ā±0.07 vs. 0.81Ā±0.06 mmol/L; mean difference -0.06 (95% CI -0.09 to -0.04); p<0.001] than non-diabetic patients. Forty-eight percent of diabetic subjects, but only 15% of non-diabetic subjects showed a serum magnesium concentration lower than 0.75 mmol/L. Significant negative correlations between magnesium and fasting plasma glucose, HbA1c, HOMA-IR, and BMI were detected. Multiple linear regression analysis showed that fasting plasma glucose and HbA1c independently predicted serum magnesium. After bariatric surgery serum magnesium increased only in those patients in whom diabetes was resolved, but remain unchanged in those who not, without difference in loss weight between groups. Changes in serum magnesium negatively correlated with changes in fasting plasma glucose and HbA1c. Absolute changes in HbA1c independently predicted magnesium changes in the multiple linear regression analysis. CONCLUSIONS: Our results provide evidence that the presence of diabetes and the degree of metabolic control are essential in accounting for the lower levels of magnesium that exist in obese subjects
Measurement of Ļ c1 and Ļ c2 production with sā = 7 TeV pp collisions at ATLAS
The prompt and non-prompt production cross-sections for the Ļ c1 and Ļ c2 charmonium states are measured in pp collisions at sā = 7 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the LHC using 4.5 fbā1 of integrated luminosity. The Ļ c states are reconstructed through the radiative decay Ļ c ā J/ĻĪ³ (with J/Ļ ā Ī¼ + Ī¼ ā) where photons are reconstructed from Ī³ ā e + e ā conversions. The production rate of the Ļ c2 state relative to the Ļ c1 state is measured for prompt and non-prompt Ļ c as a function of J/Ļ transverse momentum. The prompt Ļ c cross-sections are combined with existing measurements of prompt J/Ļ production to derive the fraction of prompt J/Ļ produced in feed-down from Ļ c decays. The fractions of Ļ c1 and Ļ c2 produced in b-hadron decays are also measured
Measurements of fiducial and differential cross sections for Higgs boson production in the diphoton decay channel at sā=8 TeV with ATLAS
Measurements of fiducial and differential cross sections are presented for Higgs boson production in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of sā=8 TeV. The analysis is performed in the H ā Ī³Ī³ decay channel using 20.3 fbā1 of data recorded by the ATLAS experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. The signal is extracted using a fit to the diphoton invariant mass spectrum assuming that the width of the resonance is much smaller than the experimental resolution. The signal yields are corrected for the effects of detector inefficiency and resolution. The pp ā H ā Ī³Ī³ fiducial cross section is measured to be 43.2 Ā±9.4(stat.) āā2.9 +ā3.2 (syst.) Ā±1.2(lumi)fb for a Higgs boson of mass 125.4GeV decaying to two isolated photons that have transverse momentum greater than 35% and 25% of the diphoton invariant mass and each with absolute pseudorapidity less than 2.37. Four additional fiducial cross sections and two cross-section limits are presented in phase space regions that test the theoretical modelling of different Higgs boson production mechanisms, or are sensitive to physics beyond the Standard Model. Differential cross sections are also presented, as a function of variables related to the diphoton kinematics and the jet activity produced in the Higgs boson events. The observed spectra are statistically limited but broadly in line with the theoretical expectations
