Transport of a quantum degenerate heteronuclear Bose-Fermi mixture in a harmonic trap
We report on the transport of mixed quantum degenerate gases of bosonic 87Rb
and fermionic 40K in a harmonic potential provided by a modified QUIC trap. The
samples are transported over a distance of 6 mm to the geometric center of the
anti-Helmholtz coils of the QUIC trap. This transport mechanism was implemented
by a small modification of the QUIC trap and is free of losses and heating. It
allows all experiments using QUIC traps to use the highly homogeneous magnetic
fields that can be created in the center of a QUIC trap and improves the
optical access to the atoms, e.g., for experiments with optical lattices. This
mechanism may be cascaded to cover even larger distances for applications with
quantum degenerate samples.Comment: 7 pages, 8 figure
Geometric Phase in Entangled Bipartite Systems
The geometric phase (GP) for bipartite systems in transverse external
magnetic fields is investigated in this paper. Two different situations have
been studied. We first consider two non-interacting particles. The results show
that because of entanglement, the geometric phase is very different from that
of the non-entangled case. When the initial state is a Werner state, the
geometric phase is, in general, zero and moreover the singularity of the
geometric phase may appear with a proper evolution time. We next study the
geometric phase when intra-couplings appear and choose Werner states as the
initial states to entail this discussion. The results show that unlike our
first case, the absolute value of the GP is not zero, and attains its maximum
when the rescaled coupling constant is less than 1. The effect of
inhomogeneity of the magnetic field is also discussed.Comment: 5 pages and to be published in Euro. Phys. J.
Amicable pairs and aliquot cycles for elliptic curves
An amicable pair for an elliptic curve E/Q is a pair of primes (p,q) of good
reduction for E satisfying #E(F_p) = q and #E(F_q) = p. In this paper we study
elliptic amicable pairs and analogously defined longer elliptic aliquot cycles.
We show that there exist elliptic curves with arbitrarily long aliqout cycles,
but that CM elliptic curves (with j not 0) have no aliqout cycles of length
greater than two. We give conjectural formulas for the frequency of amicable
pairs. For CM curves, the derivation of precise conjectural formulas involves a
detailed analysis of the values of the Grossencharacter evaluated at a prime
ideal P in End(E) having the property that #E(F_P) is prime. This is especially
intricate for the family of curves with j = 0.Comment: 53 page
Elliptic flow of charged particles in Pb-Pb collisions at 2.76 TeV
We report the first measurement of charged particle elliptic flow in Pb-Pb
collisions at 2.76 TeV with the ALICE detector at the CERN Large Hadron
Collider. The measurement is performed in the central pseudorapidity region
(||<0.8) and transverse momentum range 0.2< < 5.0 GeV/. The
elliptic flow signal v, measured using the 4-particle correlation method,
averaged over transverse momentum and pseudorapidity is 0.087 0.002
(stat) 0.004 (syst) in the 40-50% centrality class. The differential
elliptic flow v reaches a maximum of 0.2 near = 3
GeV/. Compared to RHIC Au-Au collisions at 200 GeV, the elliptic flow
increases by about 30%. Some hydrodynamic model predictions which include
viscous corrections are in agreement with the observed increase.Comment: 10 pages, 4 captioned figures, published version, figures at

Stereotactic body radiotherapy for stage I lung cancer and small lung metastasis: evaluation of an immobilization system for suppression of respiratory tumor movement and preliminary results
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>In stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) for lung tumors, reducing tumor movement is necessary. In this study, we evaluated changes in tumor movement and percutaneous oxygen saturation (SpO2) levels, and preliminary clinical results of SBRT using the BodyFIX immobilization system.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Between 2004 and 2006, 53 consecutive patients were treated for 55 lesions; 42 were stage I non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), 10 were metastatic lung cancers, and 3 were local recurrences of NSCLC. Tumor movement was measured with fluoroscopy under breath holding, free breathing on a couch, and free breathing in the BodyFIX system. SpO2 levels were measured with a finger pulseoximeter under each condition. The delivered dose was 44, 48 or 52 Gy, depending on tumor diameter, in 4 fractions over 10 or 11 days.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>By using the BodyFIX system, respiratory tumor movements were significantly reduced compared with the free-breathing condition in both craniocaudal and lateral directions, although the amplitude of reduction in the craniocaudal direction was 3 mm or more in only 27% of the patients. The average SpO2 did not decrease by using the system. At 3 years, the local control rate was 80% for all lesions. Overall survival was 76%, cause-specific survival was 92%, and local progression-free survival was 76% at 3 years in primary NSCLC patients. Grade 2 radiation pneumonitis developed in 7 patients.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Respiratory tumor movement was modestly suppressed by the BodyFIX system, while the SpO2 level did not decrease. It was considered a simple and effective method for SBRT of lung tumors. Preliminary results were encouraging.</p
The ALICE Transition Radiation Detector: Construction, operation, and performance
The Transition Radiation Detector (TRD) was designed and built to enhance the capabilities of the ALICE detector at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). While aimed at providing electron identification and triggering, the TRD also contributes significantly to the track reconstruction and calibration in the central barrel of ALICE. In this paper the design, construction, operation, and performance of this detector are discussed. A pion rejection factor of up to 410 is achieved at a momentum of 1 GeV/c in p-Pb collisions and the resolution at high transverse momentum improves by about 40% when including the TRD information in track reconstruction. The triggering capability is demonstrated both for jet, light nuclei, and electron selection. (c) 2017 CERN for the benefit of the Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V
Higher harmonic anisotropic flow measurements of charged particles in Pb-Pb collisions at 2.76 TeV
We report on the first measurement of the triangular , quadrangular
, and pentagonal charged particle flow in Pb-Pb collisions at 2.76
TeV measured with the ALICE detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. We show
that the triangular flow can be described in terms of the initial spatial
anisotropy and its fluctuations, which provides strong constraints on its
origin. In the most central events, where the elliptic flow and
have similar magnitude, a double peaked structure in the two-particle azimuthal
correlations is observed, which is often interpreted as a Mach cone response to
fast partons. We show that this structure can be naturally explained from the
measured anisotropic flow Fourier coefficients.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, published version, figures at
