    Microfluidic chromatography for early stage evaluation of biopharmaceutical binding and separation conditions

    Optimization of separation conditions for biopharmaceuticals requires evaluation of a large number of process variables. To miniaturize this evaluation a microfluidic column (1.5 mu L volume and 1cm height) was fabricated and packed with a typical process scale resin. The device was assessed by comparison to a protein separation at conventional laboratory scale. This was based upon measurement of the quality of packing and generation of breakthrough and elution curves. Dynamic binding capacities from the microfluidic column compared well with the laboratory scale. Microfluidic scale gradient elution separations also equated to the laboratory column three orders of magnitude larger in scale

    The Effect of Large-Scale Power on Simulated Spectra of the Lya forest

    We study the effects of box size on ENZO simulations of the intergalactic medium (IGM) at z = 2. We follow statistics of the cold dark matter (CDM) and the Lya absorption. We find that the larger boxes have fewer pixels with significant absorption (flux < 0.96) and more pixels in longer stretches with little or no absorption, and they have wider Lya lines. We trace these effect back to the additional power in larger boxes from longer wavelength modes. The IGM in our larger boxes is hotter, from increased pressure heating due to faster hydrodynamical infall. When we increase the photoheating in smaller boxes to compensate, their Lya statistics change to mimic those of a box of twice the size. Statistics converge towards their value in the largest (76.8 Mpc) box, except for the most common value of the CDM density which continues to rise. When we compare to errors with data, we find that our 76.8 Mpc box is larger than we need for the mean flux, barely large enough for the column density distribution and the power spectrum of the flux, and too small for the line widths. This box with 75 kpc cells has approximately the same mean flux as QSO spectra, but the Lya lines are too wide by 2.6 km/s, there are too few lines with log H I column densities > 10^17 cm^-2, and the power of the flux is too low by 20 - 50%, from small to large scales. Four times smaller cell size does not resolve these differences, nor do simple changes to the ultraviolet background that drives the H and He II ionization. It is hard to see how simulations using popular cosmological and astrophysical parameters can match Lyman-alpha forest data at z=2

    Extended 3D annotations as a new mechanism to explicitly communicate geometric design intent and increase CAD model reusability

    A successful implementation of the Model-Based Enterprise concept (MBE) requires maximizing the potential benefits of annotated 3D models. The foundations of the MBE model are established by digital product definition data practices, which are currently regulated by standards such as ASME Y14.41-2003 and ISO 16792:2006. At the center of the MBE concept is the notion of CAD model reusability, which relies on the idea that 3D CAD models can be reused both throughout the entire product lifecycle and as a starting point for future development of new products. In this context, a critical aspect of CAD model reuse is the proper identification and understanding of the geometric design intent that is usually expressed implicitly within the CAD model. In this work, we present a method to communicate geometric design intent explicitly by overloading and extending the scope of the current annotation instruments available in the MBE approach.We propose a new broader type of model annotation that we call extended annotation , where design information is represented both internally within the 3D model and externally, on a separate repository. This structure naturally demands additional mechanisms to support the interaction of users with the information. In order to manage the information stored in these extended annotations effectively, we implemented an annotation manager that automatically synchronizes the dual representation of the annotations. To reduce the visual clutter in the 3D model, the software provides powerful filtering, editing, and visualization capabilities, giving users complete control of the information stored in the model. Finally, a study was conducted with 60 participants to evaluate the performance of the proposed model and the usability of the annotation manager.     This article looks at parallel methods, motivations and modes of consumption between formative British pop art and British fairground art. I focus on two strands, the emergent critical work of the Independent Group and the school of artists based at the Royal College of Art under the nominal leadership of Peter Blake. I use iconographical and iconological methods to compare the content of the art, and then examine how pop art tried to create both a critical and playful distancing from established rules and practices of the artistic canon. I focus on non-institutional cultural groupings and diffuse production and consumption models

    THE DATA REDUCTION PIPELINE FOR THE APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY GALACTIC EVOLUTION EXPERIMENT

    The Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE), part of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey III, explores the stellar populations of the Milky Way using the Sloan 2.5-m telescope linked to a high resolution (R ~ 22,500), near-infrared (1.51–1.70 ”m) spectrograph with 300 optical fibers. For over 150,000 predominantly red giant branch stars that APOGEE targeted across the Galactic bulge, disks and halo, the collected high signal-to-noise ratio (>100 per half-resolution element) spectra provide accurate (~0.1 km s-1) RVs, stellar atmospheric parameters, and precise (lesssim0.1 dex) chemical abundances for about 15 chemical species. Here we describe the basic APOGEE data reduction software that reduces multiple 3D raw data cubes into calibrated, well-sampled, combined 1D spectra, as implemented for the SDSS-III/APOGEE data releases (DR10, DR11 and DR12). The processing of the near-IR spectral data of APOGEE presents some challenges for reduction, including automated sky subtraction and telluric correction over a 3°-diameter field and the combination of spectrally dithered spectra.     Generalized Poisson Summation Formulas for Continuous Functions of Polynomial Growth

    The Poisson summation formula (PSF) describes the equivalence between the sampling of an analog signal and the periodization of its frequency spectrum. In engineering textbooks, the PSF is usually stated formally without explicit conditions on the signal for the formula to hold. By contrast, in the mathematics literature, the PSF is commonly stated and proven in the pointwise sense for various types of L1 L _{ 1 } signals. This L1 L _{ 1 } assumption is, however, too restrictive for many signal-processing tasks that demand the sampling of possibly growing signals. In this paper, we present two generalized versions of the PSF for d-dimensional signals of polynomial growth. In the first generalization, we show that the PSF holds in the space of tempered distributions for every continuous and polynomially growing signal. In the second generalization, the PSF holds in a particular negative-order Sobolev space if we further require that d∕2 + Δ derivatives of the signal are bounded by some polynomial in the L2 L _{ 2 } sense
