Measurement of D-meson production in pp, p-Pb, and Pb-Pb collisions at the LHC with the ALICE detector

Heavy quarks are a powerful probe for investigating the properties of the Quark-Gluon Plasma created in heavy-ion collisions, since they are produced in initial hard scattering processes and experience all the stages of the medium evolution. ALICE has measured the production of D0\mathrm{D}^0, D+\mathrm{D}^+, D+\mathrm{D}^{*+}, and Ds+\mathrm{D}_{\mathrm{s}}^+ mesons at central rapidity in their hadronic decay channels in various collision systems and energies. We present recent results for D-meson production measured by the ALICE Collaboration in pp collisions at s=7\sqrt{s}=7 and 2.76 TeV, Pb-Pb collisions at sNN=2.76\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}}=2.76 TeV and p-Pb collisions at sNN=5.02\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}}=5.02 TeV.Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures; Invited talk presented at the 30th Winter Workshop on Nuclear Dynamics (WWND 2014), Galveston, Texas, USA, April 6-12, 201

Measurements of open-charm production in pp and p-Pb collisions with the ALICE detector at the LHC

Hadrons containing heavy quarks, i.e. charm and beauty, are effective probes to investigate the properties of the hot, dense and strongly-interacting medium formed in high-energy nuclear collisions. The relatively large masses of heavy quarks ensure that they are predominantly produced in the early stages of the collision and probe the complete space-time evolution of the expanding medium. The measurements of D-meson production in pp collisions provide an important test of pQCD calculations and serve as an essential baseline for the comprehensive studies in heavy-ion collisions. The study of D-meson production in p-Pb collisions is necessary to disentangle the cold nuclear matter effects from hot nuclear matter effects. The measurement of heavy-flavour production as a function of charged-particle multiplicity in pp and p-Pb collisions could provide insight into the role of multi-parton interactions at LHC energies. We present ALICE results on D-meson production in pp collisions at s=\sqrt{s} = 7 TeV and p-Pb collisions at sNN=\sqrt{s_{\rm {NN}}}= 5.02 TeV. The D-meson yields per event, measured in different multiplicity intervals and normalized to their multiplicity-integrated values, are presented for pp and p-Pb collisions. The pTp_{\rm {T}}-differential production cross section and nuclear modification factor of prompt D mesons are measured in p-Pb collisions. The nuclear modification factor, RpPbR_\mathrm{pPb}, is compatible with unity within uncertainties, indicating that cold nuclear matter effects are small for pT3p_{\mathrm{T}} \gtrsim 3 GeV/cc. The D-meson transverse momentum distributions in p-Pb collisions relative to pp collisions, measured in several multiplicity classes, are also discussed.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures; To appear in the proceedings of the 7th International Conference on Physics and Astrophysics of Quark Gluon Plasma (ICPAQGP 2015), Kolkata, India. First event-by-event fluctuation studies in Pb-Pb collisions at LHC energy by the ALICE experiment

The presence of the phase transition can manifest itself by the characteristic behavior of several observables which may vary dramatically from one event to the other. Thus, the study of various conserved quantities on an event-by-event basis offers the possibility to study the phase transition and the nature of high density matter. The ALICE experiment is well suited for precise event-by-event measurements of various quantities. In this article, the event-by-event fluctuations of mean transverse momentum and net-charge distributions as measured by the ALICE experiment are presented

Service learning: a concept we are not as familiar with as we might think

    Get PDF
Despite a common belief, service learning is completely different from community service. Service learning is different from community service because not only is working being accomplished in a community, but also students are learning how to apply service to their everyday lives as citizens of the community. Active citizenship is an essential skill to add to higher education curriculums because the students graduating are more likely going to become our future leaders

A study of changing patterns of energy consumption and energy efficiency in the Indian manufacturing sector

In the present economic scenario, the key concerns in policy making in India are: how to achieve higher energy efficiency in the key sectors and how to reduce the vulnerability of the economy to external shocks. In this paper, an attempt is made to study the changing pattern of commercial energy consumption in the manufacturing sector, which is the largest user of commercial energy and to identify the alternative energy saving processes through technological upgradation. For this purpose, we have adopted Divisia index decomposition method, which decomposes the aggregate energy intensity index into structural intensity index and the energy intensity index. The findings of the paper suggest that while several sub-sectors have shown increasing trends of technical efficiency, there is still a lot of scope for energy saving potential in the industrial sub-sectors. Further, it is found out that the change in the aggregate energy intensity index has not been influenced much by the structural effects. Instead, major segment of the change in aggregate intensity index is explained by the reduced energy intensity index.Energy consumption, Divisia decomposition method, India, Efficiency
