    Combinatorial Voter Control in Elections

    Voter control problems model situations such as an external agent trying to affect the result of an election by adding voters, for example by convincing some voters to vote who would otherwise not attend the election. Traditionally, voters are added one at a time, with the goal of making a distinguished alternative win by adding a minimum number of voters. In this paper, we initiate the study of combinatorial variants of control by adding voters: In our setting, when we choose to add a voter~vv, we also have to add a whole bundle Îș(v)\kappa(v) of voters associated with vv. We study the computational complexity of this problem for two of the most basic voting rules, namely the Plurality rule and the Condorcet rule.Comment: An extended abstract appears in MFCS 201

    Disordered Hubbard Model with Attraction: Coupling Energy of Cooper Pairs in Small Clusters

    We generalize the Cooper problem to the case of many interacting particles in the vicinity of the Fermi level in the presence of disorder. On the basis of this approach we study numerically the variation of the pair coupling energy in small clusters as a function of disorder. We show that the Cooper pair energy is strongly enhanced by disorder, which at the same time leads to the localization of pairs.Comment: revtex, 5 pages, 6 figure

    Neutral top-pion and lepton flavor violating processes

    In the context of topcolor-assisted techicolor(TC2) models, we study the contributions of the neutral top-pion πt0\pi^{0}_{t} to the lepton flavor violating(LFV) processes li→ljÎłl_{i}\to l_{j}\gamma and li→ljlklll_{i}\to l_{j}l_{k}l_{l}. We find that the present experimental bound on Ό→eÎł\mu\to e\gamma gives severe constraints on the free parameters of TC2TC2 models. Taking into account these constraints, we consider the processes li→ljlklll_{i}\to l_{j}l_{k}l_{l} generated by top-pion exchange at the tree-level and the one loop level, and obtain Br(Ό→3e)≃2.87×10−14Br(\mu\to 3e)\simeq 2.87\times 10^{-14}, 1.1×10−15≀Br(τ→3e)≃Br(τ→2eÎŒ)≀4.4×10−151.1\times 10^{-15}\leq Br(\tau\to 3e)\simeq Br(\tau\to 2e\mu)\leq 4.4 \times 10^{-15} , 3.1×10−15≀Br(τ→2ÎŒe)≃Br(τ→3ÎŒ)≀1.5×10−143.1\times 10^{-15} \leq Br(\tau\to 2\mu e)\simeq Br(\tau\to 3\mu)\leq 1.5 \times 10^{-14} in most of the parameter space.Comment: latex files,16 pages, 6 figures.     Neutrino Masses with "Zero Sum" Condition: mΜ1+mΜ2+mΜ3=0m_{\nu_1} + m_{\nu_2} + m_{\nu_3} = 0

    It is well known that the neutrino mass matrix contains more parameters than experimentalists can hope to measure in the foreseeable future even if we impose CP invariance. Thus, various authors have proposed ansatzes to restrict the form of the neutrino mass matrix further. Here we propose that mÎœ1+mÎœ2+mÎœ3=0m_{\nu_1} + m_{\nu_2} + m_{\nu_3} = 0; this ``zero sum'' condition can occur in certain class of models, such as models whose neutrino mass matrix can be expressed as commutator of two matrices. With this condition, the absolute neutrino mass can be obtained in terms of the mass-squared differences. When combined with the accumulated experimental data this condition predicts two types of mass hierarchies, with one of them characterized by mÎœ3≈−2mÎœ1≈−2mÎœ2≈0.063m_{\nu_3} \approx -2m_{\nu_1} \approx -2 m_{\nu_2} \approx 0.063 eV, and the other by mÎœ1≈−mÎœ2≈0.054m_{\nu_1} \approx -m_{\nu_2} \approx 0.054 eV and mÎœ3≈0.0064m_{\nu_3} \approx 0.0064 eV. The mass ranges predicted is just below the cosmological upper bound of 0.23 eV from recent WMAP data and can be probed in the near future.     Associations between personal apparent temperature exposures and asthma symptoms in children with asthma

    Ambient temperature and relative humidity can affect asthma symptoms. Apparent temperature is a measure of temperature perceived by humans that takes into account the effect of humidity. However, the potential link between personal exposures to apparent temperature and asthma symptoms has not been investigated. We conducted a panel study of 37 asthmatic children, aged 5–11 years, during an early spring season (average daily ambient temperature: 14C, range: 7–18C). Asthma symptoms were measured 4 times for each participant with a 2-week interval between consecutive measurements using the Childhood Asthma-Control Test (C-ACT). Average, minimum, and maximum personal apparent temperature exposures, apparent temperature exposure variability (TV), and average ambient temperature were calculated for the 12 hours, 24 hours, week, and 2 weeks prior to each visit. We found that a 10C lower in 1-week and 2-week average & minimum personal apparent temperature exposures, TV, and average ambient temperature exposures were significantly associated with lower total C-ACT scores by up to 2.2, 1.4, 3.3, and 1.4 points, respectively, indicating worsened asthma symptoms. Our results support that personal apparent temperature exposure is potentially a stronger driver than ambient temperature exposures for the variability in asthma symptom scores. Maintaining a proper personal apparent temperature exposure could be an effective strategy for personalized asthma management.     The Gestalt of functioning in autism revisited: First revision of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health Core Sets

    Functioning is a construct capturing how an individual’s engagement in everyday life emerges from the interaction between the individual and their environment. The World Health Organization’s International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) provides a biopsychosocial framework of functioning. Previously, the ICF was adapted for use in autism by developing Core Sets, a selection of ICF codes from the entire classification for specific conditions. Here, we present the first revision of the ICF of the Core sets for autism from a Delphi-like technique, based on evidence from Core Sets validation/linking studies, stakeholder feedback, and the development and piloting of the autism ICF Core Sets platform. Two ICF second-level codes were removed, and 12 were added to the comprehensive autism Core Set. The added codes reflect body functions in various sensory domains, fine hand use, and environmental factors. Changes were extensive for the age-appropriate brief Core Sets where ICF codes from the initial Core Sets were added or removed. The revisions conducted indicate a continued need for regularly updating Core Sets, based on empirical evidence and stakeholder involvement. We recommend the updated Core Sets for future use in autism research and practice in different age groups and contexts

    A study of charged kappa in J/ψ→K±Ksπ∓π0J/\psi \to K^{\pm} K_s \pi^{\mp} \pi^0

    Based on 58×10658 \times 10^6 J/ψJ/\psi events collected by BESII, the decay J/ψ→K±Ksπ∓π0J/\psi \to K^{\pm} K_s \pi^{\mp} \pi^0 is studied. In the invariant mass spectrum recoiling against the charged K∗(892)±K^*(892)^{\pm}, the charged Îș\kappa particle is found as a low mass enhancement. If a Breit-Wigner function of constant width is used to parameterize the kappa, its pole locates at (849±77−14+18)−i(256±40−22+46)(849 \pm 77 ^{+18}_{-14}) -i (256 \pm 40 ^{+46}_{-22}) MeV/c2c^2. Also in this channel, the decay J/ψ→K∗(892)+K∗(892)−J/\psi \to K^*(892)^+ K^*(892)^- is observed for the first time. Its branching ratio is (1.00±0.19−0.32+0.11)×10−3(1.00 \pm 0.19 ^{+0.11}_{-0.32}) \times 10^{-3}.Comment: 14 pages, 4 figure

    Search for direct production of charginos and neutralinos in events with three leptons and missing transverse momentum in √s = 7 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector

    A search for the direct production of charginos and neutralinos in final states with three electrons or muons and missing transverse momentum is presented. The analysis is based on 4.7 fb−1 of proton–proton collision data delivered by the Large Hadron Collider and recorded with the ATLAS detector. Observations are consistent with Standard Model expectations in three signal regions that are either depleted or enriched in Z-boson decays. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are set in R-parity conserving phenomenological minimal supersymmetric models and in simplified models, significantly extending previous results

    Search for displaced vertices arising from decays of new heavy particles in 7 TeV pp collisions at ATLAS

    We present the results of a search for new, heavy particles that decay at a significant distance from their production point into a final state containing charged hadrons in association with a high-momentum muon. The search is conducted in a pp-collision data sample with a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV and an integrated luminosity of 33 pb^-1 collected in 2010 by the ATLAS detector operating at the Large Hadron Collider. Production of such particles is expected in various scenarios of physics beyond the standard model. We observe no signal and place limits on the production cross-section of supersymmetric particles in an R-parity-violating scenario as a function of the neutralino lifetime.     Jet size dependence of single jet suppression in lead-lead collisions at sqrt(s(NN)) = 2.76 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the LHC

    Measurements of inclusive jet suppression in heavy ion collisions at the LHC provide direct sensitivity to the physics of jet quenching. In a sample of lead-lead collisions at sqrt(s) = 2.76 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of approximately 7 inverse microbarns, ATLAS has measured jets with a calorimeter over the pseudorapidity interval |eta| < 2.1 and over the transverse momentum range 38 < pT < 210 GeV. Jets were reconstructed using the anti-kt algorithm with values for the distance parameter that determines the nominal jet radius of R = 0.2, 0.3, 0.4 and 0.5. The centrality dependence of the jet yield is characterized by the jet "central-to-peripheral ratio," Rcp. Jet production is found to be suppressed by approximately a factor of two in the 10% most central collisions relative to peripheral collisions. Rcp varies smoothly with centrality as characterized by the number of participating nucleons. The observed suppression is only weakly dependent on jet radius and transverse momentum. These results provide the first direct measurement of inclusive jet suppression in heavy ion collisions and complement previous measurements of dijet transverse energy imbalance at the LHC.Comment: 15 pages plus author list (30 pages total), 8 figures, 2 tables, submitted to Physics Letters B.
