    Cultural heritage and community engagement : exploring participatory approaches in Nepal

    Community engagement in Cultural Heritage Management is not a popular practice in Nepal. However, recent political transformations that emphasize inclusive participation in development projects have started to allow local communities to enter into the heritage management process. Within this new relationship, there appear to be two key concerns for local communities: the distribution of revenue generated from heritage; and an ability to participate more fully in the design and management of such enterprises. Using semi-structured interviews with community stakeholders and heritage management authorities at two case study sites in Kathmandu – Boudhanath Stupa and Rani-Pokhari – this research aims to explore whether or not decentralized grassroots engagements with cultural heritage in Nepal provides a more effective and sustainable management strategy. This research is an evaluative study of contemporary policy on cultural heritage management in Kathmandu, and ultimately aims to contribute to heritage debates by offering a new perspective on community engagement specific to the post-disaster, post-development Nepalese context

    Evaluating Hydrological Model Performances on Stream Flow Simulation with Agricultural Management

    Two comprehensive agricultural watershed-scale hydrological models: Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT), and Annualized Agricultural Non-Point Source Pollution Model (AnnAGNPS), have been widely used for evaluating agricultural Best Management Practice (BMP). In this study, models were developed for the Big Sunflower River Watershed (BSRW) in Mississippi, USA. Both hydrological models were successfully calibrated and validated for predicting monthly stream flow discharges from three USGS gages (Merigold, Sunflower, and Leland) within the BSRW. The model performances were reasonable with R2 and NSE values range from 0.45 to 0.84 for SWAT, and from 0.34 to 0.66 for AnnAGNPS. Both models predicted lower stream flow discharge with conservation tillage practice as compare to conventional tillage practice BMP evaluated in this study. Overall, results showed that both SWAT and AnnAGNPS models successfully simulated hydrological conditions of the watershed with agricultural BMP, and these models can be useful for making hydrological decisions related to agricultural watershed managements.     SWAT bacteria sub-model evaluation and application

MankinThe overall goal of this study was to evaluate and apply the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model for fecal bacteria modeling. Methods were developed to characterize fecal coliform bacteria (FCB) from livestock, human, and wildlife sources to use as input in the model. Model sensitivity to predict FCB concentration was evaluated for the model parameters and input parameters using both SWAT 2000 and 2005 versions. Sensitivity of input parameters generally, ranked as Bacteria concentration ≥ TBACT > Wildlife source loads > Livestock stocking rate ≥ Livestock manure production rate > BACTKDQ for SWAT 2000 whereas it was ranked as BACTKDQ > TBACT > Bacteria concentration > WDLPQ > WDLPS for SWAT 2005. Sensitivity of model and input parameters were found changed from SWAT 2000. The SWAT (2005) model was calibrated and validated for daily flow, sediment, and fecal bacteria concentration using one year of measured data (January to December, 2004). The SWAT model predicted results with poor to very good agreement when compared with measured data with coefficient of determination (R2) and Nash-Sutcliffe Efficiency Index (E) range of 0.10 to 0.89 for daily flows, sediment, total phosphorus, total nitrogen and total FCB concentration. More extensive in-stream data are needed for more comprehensive model assessment. The SWAT model (2005) was evaluated for source-specific FCB modeling using three years (2004-2006) of observed modified deterministic probability of bacteria source tracking (BST) data. The FCB sources were modeled with three combinations (livestock and human, livestock and wildlife, wildlife and human) and each single source to evaluate the source-specific FCB concentrations. The SWAT model determined poor to good agreement for the combined source of FCB (R2, E range from -2.92 to 0.71) but determined generally decreased agreement for each single source of bacteria (R2, E range from -5.03 to 0.39) potentially due to BST uncertainty, spatial variability and source characterization. The SWAT model identified critical sub-watersheds in the watershed where implementing vegetative filter strips (VFS) could be most effective to abate fecal bacteria pollution. The targeting method of VFS application to the watershed sub-basins was found to be more effective in reducing both FCB (60% vs. 42%) and sediment yield (63% vs. 33%) as compared to a random approach. The FCB source characterization methods for modeling developed in this study are general and have the potential to be extended to other watersheds. The results of this study demonstrate that the SWAT model can be used to characterize the distribution of bacteria sources within a bacteria impaired watershed and assist with developing total maximum daily loads (TMDLs) and watershed restoration strategies

    Selection of Pyramided Barley Advanced Lines for Stripe Rust, Leaf Rust and Crown Rust Diseases Using Molecular Markers

    Barley diseases are the major yield limiting factors for barley cultivation in Nepal. Stripe/Yellow rust (P. striformis f.sp. hordei and P. striformis f.sp. tritici), leaf rust (Puccinia hordei), and crown rust (P. coronata) are the major rust diseases in Nepal. Pyramiding resistance genes against all these rust diseases are possible through molecular marker assisted breeding. Sweden originated barley variety ‘Bonus’ is found resistant to stripe rust and having linked microsatellite markers for stripe rust and crown rust resistance. Similarly, Nepalese hull-less barley variety ‘Solu Uwa’ and Nepalese awn-less barley landrace NPGR Acc# 2478 have linked microsatellite markers for leaf rust resistance. Therefore, one polymorphic sequence tagged sites (STS) marker (ABG054) for stripe rust resistance, two polymorphic simple sequence repeats (SSR) markers (Bmac0144h and HVM049) for leaf rust and one polymorphic SSR marker (Bmag0006) for crown rust resistance were used to select the advanced barley lines (at F8 stage) from above parents. Field screening of stripe rust resistance was also conducted. Among 51 advanced and field disease resistance lines from Bonus/Solu Uwa cross, we have selected 10 pyramided lines for all three types of barley rust resistance. Similarly, among 39 advanced and field disease resistance lines from Bonus/NPGR Acc#2478 cross we have selected three pyramided lines and advanced for further yield testing for general cultivation purpose. The chances of losing the desired gene are high in late generation selection using molecular marker assisted selection (MAS); but the chances of getting agronomically superior varietal output will also increase

    The Benefits of the Arkansas Rice Check-Off Program

    As margins are reducing for agricultural producers there is a concerted effort to analyze all costs. One such cost for rice producers in Arkansas is their contribution to the Rice Check-off Program. This study analyzes the cost-benefit ratio of funds contributed by Arkansas rice producers and the holistic (both economic and environmental) benefits they receive. This study analyzes just five of the many programs the Rice Check-off Program invests in through the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture (UASDA) and suggests that every dollar invested generated an average return of 28.49between2002–2018(28.49 between 2002–2018 (70.45 when ecosystem benefits are included). That being said, our benefit-cost ratios of 28.49 to 1 and 70.45 to 1, are conservative estimates as we are comparing the total Rice Checkoff funding provided to the UASDA to the benefits of just five of its funded programs. These same investments have resulted in an increase in the rice supply sufficient enough to feed 4.15 million people annually. Rice Check-off funds have consistently provided substantial benefits from their investments

    Multi-photon ionization and fragmentation of uracil: neutral excited-state ring opening and hydration effects

    Multi-photon ionization (MPI) of the RNA base uracil has been studied in the wavelength range 220–270 nm, coinciding with excitation to the S2(ππ*) state. A fragment ion at m/z = 84 was produced by 2-photon absorption at wavelengths ≤232 nm and assigned to C3H4N2O+ following CO abstraction. This ion has not been observed in alternative dissociative ionization processes (notably electron impact) and its threshold is close to recent calculations of the minimum activation energy for a ring opening conical intersection to a σ(n-π)π* closed shell state. Moreover, the predicted ring opening transition leaves a CO group at one end of the isomer, apparently vulnerable to abstraction. An MPI mass spectrum of uracil-water clusters is presented for the first time and compared with an equivalent dry measurement. Hydration enhances certain fragment ion pathways (particularly C3H3NO+) but represses C3H4N2O+ production. This indicates that hydrogen bonding to water stabilizes uracil with respect to neutral excited-state ring opening
