    Domain Adaptation in LiDAR Semantic Segmentation by Aligning Class Distributions

    LiDAR semantic segmentation provides 3D semantic information about the environment, an essential cue for intelligent systems during their decision making processes. Deep neural networks are achieving state-of-the-art results on large public benchmarks on this task. Unfortunately, finding models that generalize well or adapt to additional domains, where data distribution is different, remains a major challenge. This work addresses the problem of unsupervised domain adaptation for LiDAR semantic segmentation models. Our approach combines novel ideas on top of the current state-of-the-art approaches and yields new state-of-the-art results. We propose simple but effective strategies to reduce the domain shift by aligning the data distribution on the input space. Besides, we propose a learning-based approach that aligns the distribution of the semantic classes of the target domain to the source domain. The presented ablation study shows how each part contributes to the final performance. Our strategy is shown to outperform previous approaches for domain adaptation with comparisons run on three different domains.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figure

    Domain Aligned CLIP for Few-shot Classification

    Large vision-language representation learning models like CLIP have demonstrated impressive performance for zero-shot transfer to downstream tasks while largely benefiting from inter-modal (image-text) alignment via contrastive objectives. This downstream performance can further be enhanced by full-scale fine-tuning which is often compute intensive, requires large labelled data, and can reduce out-of-distribution (OOD) robustness. Furthermore, sole reliance on inter-modal alignment might overlook the rich information embedded within each individual modality. In this work, we introduce a sample-efficient domain adaptation strategy for CLIP, termed Domain Aligned CLIP (DAC), which improves both intra-modal (image-image) and inter-modal alignment on target distributions without fine-tuning the main model. For intra-modal alignment, we introduce a lightweight adapter that is specifically trained with an intra-modal contrastive objective. To improve inter-modal alignment, we introduce a simple framework to modulate the precomputed class text embeddings. The proposed few-shot fine-tuning framework is computationally efficient, robust to distribution shifts, and does not alter CLIP's parameters. We study the effectiveness of DAC by benchmarking on 11 widely used image classification tasks with consistent improvements in 16-shot classification upon strong baselines by about 2.3% and demonstrate competitive performance on 4 OOD robustness benchmarks.Comment: To appear at WACV 202

    Drivers of stream-living brown trout populations in Spain: An assessment at a large geographical scale

    A declining trend in the brown trout (Salmo trutta) abundance has been observed in several datasets available. Quantitative data from 723 stream sites (3915 occasions) provided by a consortium of fisheries authorities and simultaneously collected explanatory variables (hydrology, temperature, impacts and pressures, geology, physiography and angling activity) were analyzed to answer the following issues: (1) what factors drive temporal variability in brown trout abundance? (2) Do human-induced alterations affect sites where declining populations have been observed? and (3) in which proportion of the study sites temporal abundance of brown trout concur with potential driving factors?. Results provide no evidence of density-dependent recruitment regulation, but a recruitment limitation due to hydrological (mostly) and thermal (less consistent) events. Decreasing abundance was observed in one third of the sampling sites concurrent with hydrological and thermal drivers. No evidence of human-induced alterations apparently drive the observed patterns. Nevertheless, the realized carrying capacity appears significantly (p<0.05) lower in impacted than in unimpaired sites. Moreover, populations in impacted sites show significantly higher recruitment and mortality rates, behaving like artificially 'accelerated' populations. In the impacted sites, populations are more volatile, and most likely due to their limited carrying capacity these sites appear prone to reach ?viability thresholds? during episodes of stochastic fluctuations or naturally-driven abundance trends. According to global change predictions, these effects are likely to remain over time or even intensify within the large scale geographical scales assessed

    8.2 ka BP paleoclimatic event and the Ebro Valley Mesolithic groups: Preliminary data from Artusia rock shelter (Unzué, Navarra, Spain)

    This paper presents the results of the first excavation campaign of the Artusia rock shelter in Unzué, Navarre, Spain. Chronocultural and archaeobiological analyses revealed five different occupation phases (Artusia I–V) within the regional Mesolithic timeline, specifically in the Mesolithic of Notches and Denticulates (Artusia I and II) and the Geometric Mesolithic (Artusia III, IV, and V). In addition, the study of the sedimentological and palaeoenvironmental evolution in the entire record helped to clearly define several climatic events which developed around 6550 cal BC–8500 cal BP and 6250 cal BC–8200 cal BP.     Transmission dynamics of pulmonary tuberculosis between autochthonous and immigrant sub-populations

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The overall incidence of tuberculosis (TB) in Western Europe has been declining since the 19<sup>th </sup>Century. However, immigrant sub-groups from high-prevalence countries are slowing down this trend. The aim of this study was to describe how immigration influences TB transmission in Germany. For that we prospectively investigated the dynamics of TB transmission between TB high-prevalence immigrant and TB low-prevalence local populations with molecular epidemiological methods and conventional contact investigations. Besides, we assessed transmission in relation to social mixing using an innovative tool that measures the integration of immigrants into the local social environment.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A prospective study of confirmed culture positive cases of pulmonary TB and their contacts was carried out in a German federal state from 2003 to 2005. Data for the study included: 1) case data routinely collected by the local public health staff and transmitted to the state health office and the national surveillance centre, 2) a study questionnaire designed to capture social interactions of relevance for TB transmission and 3) molecular genotyping data (IS<it>6110 </it>DNA fingerprint and spoligotyping). The proportion of German cases caused by foreign-born cases, and vice versa, was estimated and an integration index was computed using a selected set of questions from the study questionnaire.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>A total of 749 cases of culture-positive pulmonary tuberculosis voluntarily enrolled in the study, representing 57.8% of all registered cases diagnosed over the study period. Data that included study questionnaire and DNA fingerprinting were available for 41% (n = 308) of the study participants. Forty-seven clusters, defined as a least two cases infected by the same TB strains, were identified by molecular methods and included 132 (17%) of the study participants. Epidemiological links were identified for 28% of the clusters by conventional epidemiological data. In mixed clusters, defined as clusters including German and foreign-born individuals, the probability of cases to be caused by foreign-born cases was estimated at 18.3%. We observed a trend to mixed clusters with increasing time spent by immigrants in the host country. This group also presented comparatively higher integration indexes than immigrants in immigrant-only clusters.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Our results confirm the findings of other studies that there is no significant TB transmission from TB high-prevalence immigrant to TB low-prevalence autochthonous population. This may be explained by the good performance of tuberculosis screening programmes for certain groups arriving in Germany from high- prevalence countries, by a low degree of mixing of immigrants with the local population or by a combination of both.</p

    Measurement of the inclusive and dijet cross-sections of b-jets in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV with the ATLAS detector

    The inclusive and dijet production cross-sections have been measured for jets containing b-hadrons (b-jets) in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of sqrt(s) = 7 TeV, using the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The measurements use data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 34 pb^-1. The b-jets are identified using either a lifetime-based method, where secondary decay vertices of b-hadrons in jets are reconstructed using information from the tracking detectors, or a muon-based method where the presence of a muon is used to identify semileptonic decays of b-hadrons inside jets. The inclusive b-jet cross-section is measured as a function of transverse momentum in the range 20 < pT < 400 GeV and rapidity in the range |y| < 2.1. The bbbar-dijet cross-section is measured as a function of the dijet invariant mass in the range 110 < m_jj < 760 GeV, the azimuthal angle difference between the two jets and the angular variable chi in two dijet mass regions. The results are compared with next-to-leading-order QCD predictions. Good agreement is observed between the measured cross-sections and the predictions obtained using POWHEG + Pythia. MC@NLO + Herwig shows good agreement with the measured bbbar-dijet cross-section. However, it does not reproduce the measured inclusive cross-section well, particularly for central b-jets with large transverse momenta.Comment: 10 pages plus author list (21 pages total), 8 figures, 1 table, final version published in European Physical Journal

    Search for direct production of charginos and neutralinos in events with three leptons and missing transverse momentum in √s = 7 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector

    A search for the direct production of charginos and neutralinos in final states with three electrons or muons and missing transverse momentum is presented. The analysis is based on 4.7 fb−1 of proton–proton collision data delivered by the Large Hadron Collider and recorded with the ATLAS detector. Observations are consistent with Standard Model expectations in three signal regions that are either depleted or enriched in Z-boson decays. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are set in R-parity conserving phenomenological minimal supersymmetric models and in simplified models, significantly extending previous results

    Jet energy measurement with the ATLAS detector in proton-proton collisions at root s=7 TeV

    The jet energy scale and its systematic uncertainty are determined for jets measured with the ATLAS detector at the LHC in proton-proton collision data at a centre-of-mass energy of √s = 7TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 38 pb-1. Jets are reconstructed with the anti-kt algorithm with distance parameters R=0. 4 or R=0. 6. Jet energy and angle corrections are determined from Monte Carlo simulations to calibrate jets with transverse momenta pT≥20 GeV and pseudorapidities {pipe}η{pipe}<4. 5. The jet energy systematic uncertainty is estimated using the single isolated hadron response measured in situ and in test-beams, exploiting the transverse momentum balance between central and forward jets in events with dijet topologies and studying systematic variations in Monte Carlo simulations. The jet energy uncertainty is less than 2. 5 % in the central calorimeter region ({pipe}η{pipe}<0. 8) for jets with 60≤pT<800 GeV, and is maximally 14 % for pT<30 GeV in the most forward region 3. 2≤{pipe}η{pipe}<4. 5. The jet energy is validated for jet transverse momenta up to 1 TeV to the level of a few percent using several in situ techniques by comparing a well-known reference such as the recoiling photon pT, the sum of the transverse momenta of tracks associated to the jet, or a system of low-pT jets recoiling against a high-pT jet. More sophisticated jet calibration schemes are presented based on calorimeter cell energy density weighting or hadronic properties of jets, aiming for an improved jet energy resolution and a reduced flavour dependence of the jet response. The systematic uncertainty of the jet energy determined from a combination of in situ techniques is consistent with the one derived from single hadron response measurements over a wide kinematic range. The nominal corrections and uncertainties are derived for isolated jets in an inclusive sample of high-pT jets. Special cases such as event topologies with close-by jets, or selections of samples with an enhanced content of jets originating from light quarks, heavy quarks or gluons are also discussed and the corresponding uncertainties are determined. © 2013 CERN for the benefit of the ATLAS collaboration

    Search for displaced vertices arising from decays of new heavy particles in 7 TeV pp collisions at ATLAS

    We present the results of a search for new, heavy particles that decay at a significant distance from their production point into a final state containing charged hadrons in association with a high-momentum muon. The search is conducted in a pp-collision data sample with a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV and an integrated luminosity of 33 pb^-1 collected in 2010 by the ATLAS detector operating at the Large Hadron Collider. Production of such particles is expected in various scenarios of physics beyond the standard model. We observe no signal and place limits on the production cross-section of supersymmetric particles in an R-parity-violating scenario as a function of the neutralino lifetime. Limits are presented for different squark and neutralino masses, enabling extension of the limits to a variety of other models.Comment: 8 pages plus author list (20 pages total), 8 figures, 1 table, final version to appear in Physics Letters
