Multi-strange baryon measurements at LHC energies, with the ALICE experiment
The status of the charged multi-strange baryon analysis (Xi-, anti-Xi+,
Omega-, anti-Omega+) at LHC energies is presented. This report is based on the
results obtained with ALICE (A Large Ion Collider Experiment), profiting from
the characteristic cascade-decay topology. A special attention is drawn to the
early pp data-taking period (2009-2010) and subsequently, on the uncorrected
pT-spectra extracted at mid-rapidity for centre of mass energies of 0.9 TeV and

Physics at the LHC: a short overview
The CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) started operation a few months ago. The
machine will deliver proton-proton and nucleus-nucleus collisions at energies
as high as sqrt(s)=14 TeV and luminosities up to L~10^{34} cm^{-2}s^{-1}, never
reached before. The main open scientific questions that the seven LHC
experiments -- ATLAS, CMS, ALICE, LHCb, TOTEM, LHCf and MOEDAL -- aim to solve

Solving the problem of anomalous J/ suppression by the MPD experiment on the NICA collider
The meassurements of charmonium states production via their decay on lepton pairs by the MPD experiment on the NICA collider at the energies = 4-11 GeV per nucleon could provide important data for solving the problem of anomalous J/ suppression first observed in central Pb-Pb collisions by the NA50 Collaboration at 158 GeV/nucleon. The anomalous J/ suppression could be due to the formation of the QGP in the central heavy-ion collisions. However, this effect could be also interpreted as the result of the comover interactions in nuclear matter. The recent experiments at the SPS, at the RHIC, and the LHC reviewed in this article indicate a more complicated picture of the J/ production including the recombination, medium effects, parton shadowing, and the coherent energy loss mechanism. A more simple production mechanism could be expected at low colliding energies. However, no data were obtained at energies below GeV for heavy-ion collisions. Proton-Nucleus Collisions at the LHC: Scientific Opportunities and Requirements
Proton-nucleus (p+A) collisions have long been recognized as a crucial
component of the physics programme with nuclear beams at high energies, in
particular for their reference role to interpret and understand nucleus-nucleus
data as well as for their potential to elucidate the partonic structure of
matter at low parton fractional momenta (small-x). Here, we summarize the main
motivations that make a proton-nucleus run a decisive ingredient for a
successful heavy-ion programme at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and we
present unique scientific opportunities arising from these collisions. We also
review the status of ongoing discussions about operation plans for the p+A mode

Effective Rheology of Bubbles Moving in a Capillary Tube
We calculate the average volumetric flux versus pressure drop of bubbles
moving in a single capillary tube with varying diameter, finding a square-root
relation from mapping the flow equations onto that of a driven overdamped
pendulum. The calculation is based on a derivation of the equation of motion of
a bubble train from considering the capillary forces and the entropy production
associated with the viscous flow. We also calculate the configurational
probability of the positions of the bubbles.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figur
Study of production and cold nuclear matter effects in pPb collisions at=5 TeV
Production of mesons in proton-lead collisions at a nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass energy = 5 TeV is studied with the LHCb detector. The analysis is based on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.6 nb(-1). The mesons of transverse momenta up to 15 GeV/c are reconstructed in the dimuon decay mode. The rapidity coverage in the centre-of-mass system is 1.5 < y < 4.0 (forward region) and -5.0 < y < -2.5 (backward region). The forward-backward production ratio and the nuclear modification factor for (1S) mesons are determined. The data are compatible with the predictions for a suppression of (1S) production with respect to proton-proton collisions in the forward region, and an enhancement in the backward region. The suppression is found to be smaller than in the case of prompt J/psi mesons

Production of pions, kaons, and protons as a function of the relative transverse activity classifier in pp collisions at = 13 TeV
Abstract: The production of π±, K±, and ( p )p is measured in pp collisions at √s = 13 TeV
in different topological regions of the events. Particle transverse momentum (pT) spectra are
measured in the “toward”, “transverse”, and “away” angular regions defined with respect
to the direction of the leading particle in the event. While the toward and away regions
contain the fragmentation products of the near-side and away-side jets, respectively, the
transverse region is dominated by particles from the Underlying Event (UE). The relative
transverse activity classifier, RT = NT/〈NT〉, is used to group events according to their UE
activity, where NT is the measured charged-particle multiplicity per event in the transverse
region and 〈NT〉 is the mean value over all the analysed events. The first measurements
of identified particle pT spectra as a function of RT in the three topological regions are
reported. It is found that the yield of high transverse momentum particles relative to the
RT-integrated measurement decreases with increasing RT in both the toward and the away
regions, indicating that the softer UE dominates particle production as RT increases and
validating that RT can be used to control the magnitude of the UE. Conversely, the spectral
shapes in the transverse region harden significantly with increasing RT. This hardening
follows a mass ordering, being more significant for heavier particles. Finally, it is observed
that the pT-differential particle ratios (p + p )/(π+ + π−) and (K+ + K−)/(π+ + π−) in
the low UE limit (RT → 0) approach expectations from Monte Carlo generators such as
PYTHIA 8 with Monash 2013 tune and EPOS LHC, where the jet-fragmentation models
have been tuned to reproduce e+e− results
Charged jet cross sections and properties in proton-proton collisions at root s=7 TeV
The differential charged jet cross sections, jet fragmentation distributions, and jet shapes are measured in minimum bias proton-proton collisions at center-of-mass energy root s = 7 TeV using the ALICE detector at the LHC. Jets are reconstructed from charged particle momenta in the midrapidity region using the sequential recombination k(T) and anti-k(T) as well as the SISCone jet finding algorithms with several resolution parameters in the range R = 0.2-0.6. Differential jet production cross sections measured with the three jet finders are in agreement in the transverse momentum (p(T)) interval 20 ) of the reconstructed jet p(T). The fragmentation of leading jets with R = 0.4 using scaled p(T) spectra of the jet constituents is studied. The measurements are compared to model calculations from event generators (PYTHIA, PHOJET, HERWIG). The measured radial density distributions and distributions are well described by the PYTHIA model (tune Perugia-2011). The fragmentation distributions are better described by HERWIG.Peer reviewe
Measurement of azimuthal correlations of D mesons with charged particles in pp collisions at √s=7 TeV and p-Pb collisions at √sNN=5.02 TeV
The azimuthal correlations of D mesons with charged particles were measured with the ALICE apparatus in pp collisions at root s = 7 TeV and p-Pb collisions at root sNN = 5.02 TeV at the Large Hadron Collider. D-0, D+, and D*+ mesons and their charge conjugates with transverse momentum 3 0.3 GeV/c. The yield of charged particles in the correlation peak induced by the jet containing the D meson and the peak width are compatible within uncertainties in the two collision systems. The data are described within uncertainties by Monte-Carlo simulations based on PYTHIA, POWHEG, and EPOS 3 event generators.Peer reviewe
