Leveraging Wireless Technology for Mobile Advertising

    Get PDF
This paper is based on research conducted in cooperation with 12Snap, the leading European mobile marketing company, which has implemented large-scale mobile advertising campaigns with companies such as McDonald’s, NestlĂ©, Microsoft, Coca Cola, Adidas and Sony. To set the overall stage, we first discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the mobile phone in comparison to other marketing media. Then we propose a framework of different types of advertising campaigns that can be supported through the usage of mobile devices. These campaign types include (1) mobile push campaigns, (2) mobile pull campaigns, and (3) mobile dialogue campaigns. Building on this framework, we analyze different campaigns that 12Snap implemented for different consumer goods and media companies. Drawing from these experiences we then discuss a number of key management issues that need to be considered when implementing mobile marketing campaigns. They include the following themes: (1) the choice of campaign type, (2) the design of a campaign, (3 ) the targeting of the youth market and (4) the combination of different media types to create integrated campaigns

Battling Over Books (and More): The Internet Based Competition Between Berelsmann Online and Amazon.com

    Get PDF
This case study contrasts the business strategies of two Internet-based retailers: Amazon.com, a young Internet start-up, and Bertelsmann Online (BOL), a subsidiary of a traditional mass-media firm. It presents the global marketing approach followed by each firm for Internet-based book sales, with a particular emphasis on their operations in Germany. It analyzes how Amazon.com and BOL go about building customer relationships and loyalty and, more broadly, the strengths and weaknesses of their competitive strategy. The case concludes by highlighting the future outlook of each firm and some critical success factors in launching an Internetbased venture. Lessons learned from this comparative study are also presented

Charge transfer and heat in photocatalysis

    Get PDF
Photocatalysis occurs very often in the life of ordinary people. Its simplest example is the photosynthesis of plants and algae. It is difficult to overestimate how important this photochemical reaction is because the possibilities of its application are ranging from water purification to the development of a cheap bombed energy source. This work is aimed at a more detailed investigation of the photocatalytic reaction. For this purpose, the present work presents the analysis of the latest and most important research in the field of plasmon-induced photocatalysis. As a model system, the authors mainly used molecules of the thiol group such as nitrobenzenethiol or nitrophenol adsorbed on plasmonic nanoparticles. To characterize the resulting systems, Raman spectroscopy (SERS) was used. It is reported that the main mechanism for triggering photocatalytic reactions is the transition of hot charge carriers under the influence of light, which leads to a local surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) and a change in temperature by internal or external heating of the system. It should be noted that the main factor influencing the photocatalytic activity was not fully determined due to the numerous diverse opinions on the issue

Recent Developments in the Synthesis of Chiral Compounds with Quaternary Centers by Organocatalytic Cascade Reactions

Quaternary carbon stereocenters are present in a wide variety of organic compounds and drug molecules. Highly enantioselective construction of such quaternary carbon stereocenters has received considerable attention owing to the great challenges in their syntheses. With the development of asymmetric organocatalytic cascade reactions, several efficient methods for the construction of optically pure compounds with quaternary carbon centers have been developed. This focused review highlights the asymmetric synthesis of chiral compounds with quaternary centers through organocatalytic cascade reactions.Cascades of quaternary centers: Quaternary carbon stereocenters are present in a wide variety of organic compounds and drug molecules. Bifunctional acid-base ionic liquid for the one-pot synthesis of fine chemicals: thioethers, 2H-chromenes and 2H-quinoline derivatives

A bifunctional organocatalyst with ionic liquid properties and with an optimized distance between the acid and basic sites efficiently activates electron deficient olefins for 1,4 conjugated addition, which can be incorporated in different one-pot transformations for the preparation of cyclic and acyclic compounds of biological and synthetic interest. More specifically, the catalyst can be successfully applied for different carbon–carbon (Csingle bondC) and carbon–heteroatom (Csingle bondN, Csingle bondO, Csingle bondS) bond forming reactions integrated in a cascade sequence. The activity of the organocatalyst has been compared with that of structurally related monofunctional and bifunctional catalysts. The most attractive features of this procedure are the high atom economy and the use of inexpensive starting materials as well as the use of an environmentally friendly catalyst that can be easily recovered due to its ionic liquid properties.Financial support by Consolider-Ingenio 2010 (project MULTICAT), Spanish MICINN (Projects MAT2011-28009 and CTQ-201127550) and Program Severo Ochoa are gratefully acknowledged.Climent Olmedo, MJ.; Iborra Chornet, S.; Sabater Picot, MJ.; Vidal Castro, JD. What Explains Divorced Women's Poorer Health? The Mediating Role of Health Insurance and Access to Health Care in a Rural I owan Sample

Economic restructuring in rural areas in recent decades has been accompanied by rising marital instability. To examine the implications of the increase in divorce for the health of rural women, we examine how marital status predicts adequacy of health insurance coverage and health care access, and whether these factors help to account for the documented association between divorce and later illness. Analyzing longitudinal data from a cohort of over 400 married and recently divorced rural I owan women, we decompose the total effect of divorce on physical illness a decade later using structural equation modeling. Divorced women are less likely to report adequate health insurance in the years following divorce, inhibiting their access to medical care and threatening their physical health. Full‐time employment acts as a buffer against insurance loss for divorced women. The growth of marital instability in rural areas has had significant ramifications for women's health; the decline of adequate health insurance coverage following divorce explains a component of the association between divorced status and poorer long‐term health outcomes.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/95231/1/ruso91.pd
